CAT uses a computer algorithm that selects
questions from a large item bank
1) All respondents answer the same first question in the
middle of the scoring range (start point)
2) Response of first question dictates the next question
(easier or harder)
3) With each new response a score and CI are re-
estimated until the desired level of precision has been
satisfied (stop point)

Items are tailored to each child, irrelevant items


are avoided assessment time reduced
Approx 10-15 items are necesserary in each
domain/scale
