In retrospect of craft skills training, it was first introduced in 1967, with the
establishment of the Crafts Development Centre (PKPT) under RIDA / MARA.
The role of carpentry training was later taken over by the Malaysian Handicraft
Board (LKM) in April 1973. On 1 October 1979, the Malaysian Handicraft
Development Corporation (PKKM) was established under Act 222 to replace
LKM. Further skills training programmes were later taken over by the Malaysian
Handicraft in October 1979 until now.
In its initial stage, craft skills training was carried out in ten (10) Malaysian
Handicraft Branches throughout the country according to specialisation. For
example, batik and silverware training in Kelantan, weaving, wickerwork and
coppersmith training in Terengganu, ethnic crafts in Sarawak and Sabah,
ceramic training in Perak, wooden crafts in Pahang and glass, bamboo and
rattan training in Negeri Sembilan. Training period was between 12 to 18 months,
with emphasis on skills alone. In 1994, this training programme was reviewed to
strengthen and harmonise the existing courses especially from the aspects of a
balanced curriculum between skills and academic.
Effective as of 2000, the field of study was expanded to six (6) courses ie. Crafts
of Batik, Weaving, Ceramics, Wood, Metal and Rattan. Students who graduated
were awarded Certificate of Craft Skills. In 2001, the management of Malaysian
Handicraft through Entrepreneur Development Minister raised the application to
the Cabinet to obtain approval for the establishment of the National Craft Institute
1
(IKN). In August 2001, the Cabinet agreed to the establishment of IKN that would
issue Diplomas and Certificates to students. Simultaneously, the Malaysia
Handicraft Complex in Rawang became officially known as the National Craft
Institute (IKN).
Commencing during the 2002/2003 academic session, IKN pressed ahead with
the recruitment of new students at the diploma level. A total of 140 diploma
students were chosen to pursue the course in six streams ie. Batik, Weaving,
Ceramics, Wood, Metal and Rattan Craft Arts Stream. Although IKN offers
diploma programmes, certificate programme studies still continue. The number of
graduates who have been and will be awarded the Diploma until 2009 are 620
students, while 713 are certificate students.
