Topic:
The use of renewable energy (specifically wind turbines) in B.C and how they can affect the
amount of pollution we produce.
Intro
For my capstone project I have decided to focus on renewable energy, specifically wind turbines
and how they can lower the amount of pollution we produce in British Columbia. Wind energy
produces approximately 1.6% of British Columbias electricity demand and in the future that
number will grow. Ive also always been interested in how renewable energy and wind turbines
work and I now have chance to pursue this topic and share the information I learn with others.
respectively. In 2015, the top five Canadian emitters (Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan
and British Columbia) together released 656 Mt CO2 eq or 91% of Canada's national total GHG
Wind power was the first of the second generation renewables to become cheaper than coal, and
as a result its popularity has absolutely exploded in the last 15 years. British Columbia has many
excellent locations for wind farms, but wind power expansion has been slow compared to some
other provinces and some other countries. I plan to look at new locations for wind farms in B.C
and why they are not being constructed at a faster rate. The provincial governments new climate
strategy adopts a long-term target of emissions reduction by 80 per cent of 2007 levels by 2050.
The plan also takes important steps towards increased electrification of the transportation sector.
Renewable energy will be the way of the future and being able to learn about it now is an
amazing opportunity.
Experiment/ building wind turbine
For this project and the capstone presentation I plan on building a model of a wind turbine to
show how a wind turbine works. When you spin the propellers of the wind turbine a light
will come on to demonstrate how wind turbines produce power. I would also like to plan a
trip to visit the Eye of the Wind (wind turbine) on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver. I
feel like that trip will be a good learning experience and Ill be able to be up close to a real
wind turbine.
Information I can share with others to inform them about why wind turbines are
important
What our future will look like if we were more dependent on renewable energy
