HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

This manual is intended for you. It tells you

what you need to know to determine if an
MLRS LRU failure is a true failure or an
erroneous failure indication.

This manual is divided into three sections

and is written to make it easy for the
operator to use:

Steps are numbered in sequence

from the beginning of the manual,
not within each section.

Information is organized in the order

in which the tasks should be
performed.

To help you learn what information is in the

manual and where to look to find it read
on.

Inside the front cover, you will find a

warning that should be observed. Read it
carefully.

i
HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL - Continued

Section 1 contains the Preventive Maintenance

Checks and Services used to verify
the LRU failure reported by BIT is a
true failure, not an erroneous failure
indication caused by a random
electronics "bug" or malfunctioning
launcher power system. If, after
completing the five steps outlined
under Preventive Maintenance Checks
and Services, the LRU fault indication
still appears, refer the launcher to
Organizational Maintenance.

Section 2 is the Organizational Maintenance

that you must perform if the carrier
VOLTS gage in Step 2, System Power
Check, indicates a fault, or after
Preventive Maintenance Checks and
Services steps 1 through 5 are
completed, the malfunction is not
corrected. If after completion of step
6 and 7 the LRU fault still appears,
notify Battalion Maintenance.

ii
HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL Continued

Section 3 is the Battalion Maintenance

information. If the reported LRU
malfunction is corrected after
Organizational Maintenance
troubleshooting is completed, the
problem was a power fault and not an
LRU failure. If the malfunction is not
corrected after Organizational
Maintenance troubleshooting is
completed, the problem is an LRU
failure. The Battalion Maintenance
Officer will direct performance of the
final LRU fault test and LRU
replacement if required.

SECTION 1

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CHECKS

AND SERVICES

Step 1. Preliminary Procedure.

NOTE
At times, unwanted power
changes or other voltage changes
will cause the FCS to react to
false internal signals. Fault
prompts may be displayed or BIT
lights may come on when there is
no actual malfunction. Before
taking corrective action, make
sure the malfunction is not false.

During troubleshooting procedures, the term

"cycle FCS" is defined as follows:
(1) Turn system power off.
(2) Wait 30 seconds.
(3) Turn system power on.
(4) Repeat the operation which
indicated the malfunction.

1-1
Step 1. Preliminary Procedure (Cont)

There are three actions you can take,

depending on the indication displayed.
(1) LRU BIT light on.

If a LRU BIT light comes on, the FCS must be

cycled. If the LRU BIT light indication was
false, the light will go off. System startup
can be performed and normal operations
continued. If the LRU BIT light comes back
on, the malfunction indication is real and
corrective action must be taken.

1-2
Step 1. Preliminary Procedure (Cont)
(2) Fault Prompt Displayed.

If a fault prompt is displayed, pressing the

C/E key on the FCP will erase the fault
prompt. If a fault reappears immediately, or
if the prompt reappears after the operation
that caused the prompt to appear is
repeated; stow the LLM, if unstowed, and
cycle the FCS. If the prompt reappears, the
malfunction indication is real. Corrective
action must be taken. If the prompt does not
reappear after the C/E key is pressed, or
after the system power is cycled, normal
operation can continue.

1-3
Step 1. Preliminary Procedure (Cont)
(3) LDS MALFUNCTION Fault Prompt
Displayed.
(a) Rocket pods must be off-loaded and
LLM must be stowed to perform LDS
INTERFACE test.
(b) Verify LLM is stowed.
(c) Set system power switch to ON
position.
(d) Press number 3 key; then press EXEC
to obtain US PROMPTING.
(e) Press INDEX to obtain INDEX MENU.
(f) Press number 3 key; then press EXEC
to obtain MENUS menu. At the
MENUS menu, press number 8 key;
then press EXEC to obtain FCU/SRP
TEST MENU.
(g) Press number 2 key, then press EXEC
to perform LDS INTERFACE test.
(h) If LDS INTERFACE GOOD prompt is
displayed, set system power switch to
OFF position and proceed to Step 2,
System Power Check.
(i) If LDS INTERFACE BAD prompt is
displayed, set system power switch to
OFF position and notify the Battalion
Maintenance Officer.

1-4
