Driver trainer recommended approach and profile

A Driver Trainer is any individual assessed against this standard and subsequently deemed competent based on
their existing knowledge, experience and skills. It is intended that this document is used in association with the
training of internal company driver trainers, however it can be applied to other driver trainers.
The flexibility in encouraging locations to develop selected personnel within their organisation is provided to ensure
that a realistic and effective means of meeting the corporate recommendations pertaining to driver training and
assessment is provided.
Locations wishing to have selected individuals within their work place trained and qualified as driver trainers to
support ongoing training and assessment requirements are advised to follow the following guidance:
The success of any in house training initiative largely depends on the organizations ability to identify, select and
engage the right employee for the job. In order to assist in identifying suitable candidates for development as
Trainer and Assessors the following recommendations are made:
All candidates should have a minimum of 3 years driving experience
All candidates should provide to the training, assessment and qualifying body a copy of their most recent
Commentary Driving Assessment sheet for their most recent Commentary Drive
Where available all candidates should provide additional evidence of their own safe driving performance (For
example, recent IVMS/VDR data for the previous 3 month period)
All candidates should be recommended by their line Manager on possessing the appropriate intrinsic values and
beliefs to demonstrate safe driving performance and pass on the Companys safe driving messages.
As a means of ensuring that suitable and measurable knowledge and skill learning standards are defined and
measured for all Trainers and Assessors it is strongly recommended that an established Competency Based Training
and Assessment (CBT&A) Framework be used at all times.
In line with this framework, a number Performance Criteria for in house Trainer and Assessors are recommended.
It is recommended that all Trainers and Assessors be able to demonstrate these learning outcomes and associated
performance criteria in the workplace.
