INTRODUCTION

The excellent corrosion resistance and many other benefits of GRP pipe can be realized if the
pipe is properly installed.

GRP pipe is designed considering the bedding and pipe zone backfill support that will result
from this recommended installation procedure.

The pipe and embedment material together form a high-performance

"pipe - soil - system".

These instructions are easy to follow and to monitor. A good indication of the quality of
the installation achieved is immediately verifiable by measuring the vertical diametrical
deflection of the buried pipe and by inspecting the pipe shape.

Bulges, flat areas or other abrupt changes of curvature are not permitted.

Judgement of installation acceptability by measurement of initial deflection is valid only

when the specified installation procedures have been followed, enabling long-term effects to
be reliably predicted. Maximum long-term pipe deflection is 5%.

The installation procedures here outlined, when carefully followed, will help to assure a
proper, long-lasting installation.

1 HANDLING

1.1 GRP pipes are generally supplied in lengths of 12 m. Being these much lighter than
steel, cast iron or concrete, they are therefore easier to move. Any how it is advisable to
follow the handling instructions detailed below:

Lift the bar using slings of hemp, nylon or similar, with abundant section, but never

Rope

steel cables nor chain. Slings may consist of single lifting point at centerline, or in two lifting
points connected to an equalizer at a distance of 3 m from the ends.

Rope

In the second instance, the movement will be more secure with an overall time advantage
and a correct execution of the handling and installation operations.

1.2 STORAGE ON SITE

- Ensure that the ground is flat and free from stones or other things that may cause damage by
impact during discharging:

- Pipes of small/medium diameter (up to ND 600/800) laid out in a single layer, may be laid
directly on the ground.

- Pipes of bigger diameters shall have at least 2 supports each, at a distance of approx. 3 m
from the ends: use wooden tables not less than 25 cm wide, piling in such a way as not to lay
the ends on the ground.

DO NOT USE LOGS OR STRIPS OF LIMITED WIDTH

When pipes are delivered on site in bundles, crates or other packing, they may be stored
without unpacking.

1.3 STORAGE OF RUBBER RINGS AND LUBRICANT

Rubber ring gaskets should be stored in the shade in their original packaging and not under
direct sunlight.

The gaskets must be protected from exposure to greases and oils which are petroleum
derivatives, and from solvents and other deleterious substances.

Gasket lubricant should be carefully stored to prevent damage to the container.

Partially used buckets should be resealed to prevent contamination of the lubricant.

1.4 TRANSPORT

If it is necessary to transport pipes at the job site, it is best to use the original packing when
loading the truck. If this material is no longer available, support all pipe sections on flat
timbers spaced with a maximum overhang of 2 m. chock the pipes to maintain stability and
separation. Insure no contact between pipes occur, so vibrations during transport will not
cause abrasion.

Maximum stack height is approx. 2 m. Strap pipe to the vehicle over the support points using
pliable straps or ropes. Never use steel cables nor chains without adeguate padding to protect
the pipe from abrasion.

BULGES, FLAT AREAS OR OTHER ABRUPT CHANGES OF CURVATURE ARE NOT

PERMITTED.

TRANSPORT OF PIPES OUTSIDE THESE LIMITATIONS MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE

TO THE PIPES.

1.5 HANDLING OF NESTED PACKAGES

Pipes may be nested (smaller diameter pipes inside of larger sizes). To reduce transportation
cost. These pipes have generally special packing and may require non-standard procedures for
unloading, handling and transporting.
Non-standard practices, if required, will be supplied prior to shipment. Regardless, the
following general procedure should always be followed:

Mod. DC2/GB - Rev. 0 (12/95) This document is the property of N. SGUASSERO S.p.A. who will safeguard its rights according to the civil and penal provisions of the law.

Rev. 1

1.5.1 Always lift the nested bundle using at least two pliable straps. Limitations, if any, for
spacing between straps and lifting locations will be specified for each project.
Insure that the lifting slings have sufficient capacity for the bundle weight.

1.5.2 Nested pipes are usually best stored in the transport packaging. Stacking of these
packages should not occur unless otherwise specified.

1.5.3 Nested pipe bundles can only be safely transported in the original transport packaging.
Special requirements, if any, for support, configuration and/or strapping to the vehicle, will be
specified for each project.

1.5.4 Package removal and denesting of the inside pipes is best accomplished at a destining
station. Typically, this consists of three or four fixed cradles to fit the outside diameter of the
largest pipe of the bundle. Inside pipes, starting with the smallest size, may be removed by
lifting slightly with an inserted padded boom to suspend the section and carefully move it out
of the bundle without touching the other pipe. When weight, length and/or equipment
limitations preclude the use of this method. The procedure for sliding the inside pipe out of
the bundle will be recommended for each project.

2. INSPECTION ON SITE

2.1 Upon arrival on site, check wether the pipes had been securely fixed on the truck. In the
event of doubt, regarding the integrity of the packing or of the fixing, carefully inspect the bar
along the entire length and particularly at the ends, in order to identify possible damages
caused by impact, such as faults or cracking of the heads or areas of delamination (pale or mat
stains) on the pipe walls. If in doubt, immediately inform the carrier, the supplier's forwarding
department and put the bars aside.

2.2 If during unloading or handling on site a bar should fall down or be subjected to impact,
inspect it as detailed in 2.1; in case of doubt, set the pipe aside: The eventual repair may be
made on site by supplier's staff.

3. EXCAVATION

3.1 BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH

The bottom of the trench shall be continuous, flat and free from stones or clods of clay.

3.2 SUB-TRENCH
In case of not stable soils, the trench excavation should be deeper; a bed of gravel to support
the pipe should be provided.

3.3 WATER INFILTRATION

Water shall be completely removed before the laying and any infiltration shall be avoided
until completion of embedment,

3.4 WIDTH OF THE EXCAVATION

The width of the trench should not be larger than necessary: i.e. it should only allow the
connection of the pipes in the trench. Ensure the correct backfill beneath the pipe and permit
the compacting of the backfill materials.

WRONG: Improper bedding support

CORRECT: Proper bedding support

4. INSTALLATION

Once excavation completed, the pipe bed shall consist of approx. 20 cm sand or fine granular
material to be brought to grade along the entire length of the section to be installed. At each
joint location, the bed must be slightly excavated to accommodate the larger outside diameter
of the bell (Bell&Spigot joint). The pipe section must receive continuous support and not rest
on the bell. Alignment and levelling of the pipes must be carried out so that, during the
nesting of bell and spigot the misalignment is not grater than 0.5.

If due to unstable soils sinking of foundations, anchor blocks or manholes are impossible,
flexible joints should be provided for a distance not exceeding 2 pipe diameters.
