Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer - Job Description

DESCRIPTION
The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer is a member of an IT team-oriented staff and holds
the responsibility of providing Saba Automotive with Linux systems administration and systems
programming services.

The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer is a medium-level position; training could be


provided to a qualified candidate.

The primary responsibilities of the Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer are to provide network
administration support to Saba Automotive central systems and infrastructure by :

I. Installing and administrating few servers that run any suitable flavor of Linux based OS; on the
top of that OS; those servers will run open source applications that support networking/IT operations for
different purposes listed below serving Saba Automotive users and IT staff as well.

Caching APP like Squid (in conjunction with a Cisco router using WCCP protocol)
Security and FW APP like IP Tables
Network Logging as TACACS+
SNMP Monitoring routers and switches using packages like MRTG or CACTI
WWW service using Apache web server
Unbound DNS service
eMail service

II. Providing systems programming services using a scripting language like PERL/Python to run on
Linux/Windows server (s) to assist with networking and internet access usage monitoring and
reporting that can interact with network devices (e.g. Cisco routers).

The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer reports to the group Director and consultant of
Information Technology.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES


B.A. or B.S. degree, preferably in Computer Science.
Three years experience administering Linux systems.
Experience with scripting and programming languages, preferably "PERL" or Python.
Strong organizational and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and oral communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Experience with VMware, and networking equipment is a plus.
Proven experience with Perl or Python programming.
Experience with PHP, JavaScript/jQuery, HTML, CSS, and/or XML is a plus.
Certificates related to Linux, script programming, and networking is a plus.

DUTIES
SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION SERVICES
Serve as the primary systems administrator for Linux servers and services.
Monitor system performance and utilization.
Install, configure, and document new servers and applications.
Maintain and audit user accounts.
Manage fileserver utilization (shared folders, quotas, etc.).
Maintain servers and system security according to Saba Automotive standards.
Track vulnerabilities and apply appropriate patches and upgrades
Generate statistics for operational review and planning.
Manage backup process and perform data recoveries as needed.
Ensure IT team support requests are answered within one business day.
Respond rapidly to system maintenance needs, including on weekends and evenings.
Work with other IT Team members in developing System Administration Policies and
Systems Team long-range planning.
Work with the IT Team on security audit processes for all systems.
Periodical (daily and weekly) reporting on network utilization and health status.
PROGRAMMING SERVICES
Design, develop, document, troubleshoot, and maintain programs/scripts for systems and
applications in support of the business operations of Saba automotive.

USER SERVICES
Work with the staff to provide documentation and handouts for the programs and
services provided by the IT team.
Provide consulting services to Saba Automotive staff to help develop ideas for
innovative projects involving technology-based productivity tools, including
recommendations of appropriate hardware and software.

IT STAFF WORK
Attend staff meetings.
Participate in IT Team assignments.
Evaluate new technologies and software appropriate to Saba Automotive business.
Prepare monthly activity reports.
Perform other duties as requested by the Director/consultant of Information Technology.

CONTACTS
The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer interacts with Saba employees, and IT staff on
a daily basis and with Department/Office heads as needed.

WORK SCHEDULE
The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer is a full time position.
We work six days a week from Saturday to Thursday and from 09:00 Am to 05:00 Pm.
The Linux Systems Administrator/Programmer is on-call and must be able to respond to emergency
situations on time.
Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required and covered by an over-time payment policy .
