THE EQUATION OF A STRAIGHT LINE IN SPACE

1. Convert the following vector equations to Cartesian form

(a) r = 2i + 3j k + (i + j + k) (b) r = 4j + (3i + 5k)

2. Convert to vector form, the following equations

Find, in each case, the coordinates of the points where the line crosses the xy plane,

9. Given four points, A(1,2,4), B(2,4,2), C(6,7,1) and D(-3,4,-2) find

(a) parametric equations for the line, L, through A and B

(b) the coordinates of the point P where L cuts the xy plane

In Questions 10 to 12, find whether the given two lines are parallel, intersecting or skew. If they
are intersecting state the position vector of the common point.

15. The equations of two lines are r1 = 2i j + k + ( i 2j + 2k ) and
r2 = i 3j + 4k + ( 2i + 3j 6k ). Show that these lines are skew.
OQ is the unit vector in the direction of the first line and OR is the unit vector in the
direction of the second line. Write down the coordinates of Q and R.
By using the cosine formula in triangle OQR find the angle between OQ and OR and
hence between the given lines.

22. In a triangle ABC, AB = i + 2j + 3k and BC = -i + 4j. Find the cosine of angle ABC. Find
the vector AC and use it to calculate the angle BAC.

23. A, B and C are points with position vectors a, b and c respectively, relative to the origin
O. AB is perpendicular to OC and BC is perpendicular to OA. Show that AC is
perpendicular to OB

24. Given two vectors a and b ( a 0, b 0), show that

(a) if a + b and a - b are perpendicular then a b

25. Three vectors a, b, and c are such that a b c 0

26. Find the angle between each of the following pairs of lines

(b) A line with direction ratios 2 : 2 : 1 and a line joining the points ( 3, 1, 4) and ( 7, 2, 12)

33. A, B and C are the points (0,1,2), (3,2,1) and (1, -1,0) respectively. Find the unit vector
which is perpendicular to the plane ABC.

34. Three vectors a, b and c are such that a x b = a x c ( a 0). Show that
b c = ka, where k is the scalar.

35. Determine the work done by a force , F 6i 2 j 6k in moving an object through a

36. A force F 5i 3 j 2k is applied to an object which moves from A=(1,1,1) to


B=(5, -1,2). Determine the work done by the force , F.

37. A force of magnitude 20 N is applied to an object in the direction 3i j k . Determine


the work done by the force in moving the object from A=(3,-1,5) to B=(-1, 7,10).

38. The velocity , v , and an acceleration , a, of a particle are given by :

APPLICATIONS OF TRIPLE SCALAR PRODUCT AND THE TRIPLE VECTOR


PRODUCT

16. The vectors ( 2i + 3j k ) and ( i + 2j + k ) represent two sides of a triangle. Find


the area of the triangle.

17. The triangle ABC has its vertices at the points A (0,0,1), B (1,0,1), C (2,1,3). Find
the area of the triangle ABC

18. The vertices of a triangle are at the points with position vectors a, b and c. Prove
that the area of the triangle is | a x b + b x c + c x a|

19. A parallelogram OABC has one vertex O at the origin and the vertices A and B at
the points ( 0,1,3), (0,2,5). Find the area of OABC.

20. The parallelogram ABCD has three of its vertices A, B and C at the points (1,2,-
1), (1,3,2) and (-1,3,-1). Find the area of the parallelogram.

21. The vectors OA,OB, OC are three edges of a parallelepiped where O is the origin
and A, B and C are the points ( 2,1,0), (-1,-1,1),(0,2,-1). Find the volume of the
parallelepiped.

22. Find the volume of the tetrahedron OABC where O is the origin and A,B and C
are the points (2,0,1),(3,1,2), and ( -1,3,0).

23. ABCD is a tetrahedron and A,B,C and D are the points (0,1,0),(0,0,4),(1,1,1) and
(-1,3,2). Find the volume of the tetrahedron.

24. The four vertices of a tetrahedron are at the points with position vectors a, b, c,
d. Find the volume of the tetrahedron.

In problems 25 and 26, determine the centrifugal force vector and its magnitude, correct
to 4 significant digits. The centrifugal force is given by : -mw x ( w x r) newtons, where
m is the mass of the body ( in kg) rotating at constant angular velocity w ( radian/s)
about a fixed axis and r is the position vector of the body from the origin.
