Physical & Chemical

Properties & Changes

What are substances?
Substances can be identified as either an
element, compound or a mixture.

A substance cannot be further broken down

or purified by physical means.

Each substance has its own characteristic

properties that are different from the set of
properties of any other substance.
reactivity with acids
combustibility (flammability)
Properties of Matter
Properties of matter are characteristics which
result in the unique behavior of each
substance.

A change in matter can be physical in which

only the state or appearance changes;
chemical in which the composition or
structure changes; and nuclear in which the
atoms themselves have undergone changes.
In each case energy is always involved in the
transformation of matter.
Physical Changes
A physical change occurs when the substance changes
state but does not change its chemical composition.

The form or appearance of the substance has changed,

but the properties of the substance are the same (i.e. it
has the same melting point, boiling point, chemical
composition, etc.)

Examples:
-water freezing into ice
-cutting a piece of wood into smaller pieces
Indicators of a Physical Change
Change in shape or size

Substance dissolves

Changes phase (freezes, boils, evaporates,

condenses)
Chemical Changes
A chemical change occurs when a substance
changes into something new. This occurs due
to heating, a chemical reaction, etc.

A chemical change has happened if the

density, melting point or freezing point of the
original substance changes.
Here are some examples
of chemical changes:

campfire

rusty car
Indicators of a chemical change
Mass changed

Temperature change (without heating or cooling

substance)

Bubbles formed

Forms a precipitate (solid)
