CONCEPT PAPER
1st Semester/Summer, AY 2017-2018

Concept No. :1
General Subject Area : Embedded Systems
Specific Area of Interest : Implementation and Development of a Room Light Controller using Arduino and RFID for
NU College of Engineering Laboratories

I. Introduction
In the present-day scenario, where the energy crisis is a major concern, energy conservation is one big step
for solving the problem of energy demand. As a part of energy conservation, we have come up with a way to reduce
the wastage.

Based on the project title, Implementation and Development of a Room Light Controller using Arduino and
RFID for NU College of Engineering Laboratories, we can control the amount of lighting in a room by constantly
monitoring the level of luminance in a room. Lights are then controlled such that required illumination is available in
the room. It can be applied effectively in commercial buildings, homes, colleges etc.

On a normal day when there is a bright sun the lights will be OFF. And on a cloudy day the illumination levels
will be low, the controller calculates the required lighting by checking the illumination level and turns ON the lights.
Thus, we can reduce the unnecessary wastage of energy.

We also maximized the use of RFID or the Biometrics that will enable the system to work. The Lab
Technicians and the Professors are the ones given the authority for the system. At the tap of their ID or via
biometrics, it will make the system to work. The system can then be monitored at the Stock Room located at Room
201 of Jhocson Memorial Building.

II. Significance/ Purpose

This project aims to save energy by controlling the lights at the NU College of Engineering laboratories by
designated authorities namely the professors and lab technicians. The focus was how to reduce the energy
consumption by minimizing the wastage, turning of the lights when not required automatically by monitoring the light
availability in a room. Light intensity in the range of 90 - 100% is optimum for normal sight. If intensity > 90%, then no
lighting is required. Subsequently for every 20% drop in intensity a 10Watts lamp is turned ON to maintain optimum
lighting.
III. Project Description
A. General Objective
To implement and develop a room light controller using Arduino and RFID for NU CoE Laboratories
B. Specific Objectives
To use a RFID/biometric system for the authorized personnel
To control the light intensity by a dimmer circuit depending on the light sensed by the LDR
To have a monitoring system that keeps track of:
Classroom being used as per the schedule
The class duration
Attendance of students
C. Methodology and Timeline

This project will describe a completed room light control system for a better way of saving energy using
Arduino and RFID. The overall methodology includes a combination of previous project studies, ideas and
hardware. Fig. 1 show the approach used to implement the project. Upon approval of the title:

The implementation of the system is divided into two categories, which are hardware design and software
design. In hardware design, to design the dimmer circuit and RFID devices that detect the unique ID in professor
card. The hardware device used is Arduino as platform. For the software design, to design the software system
which will display the monitoring of the lights, the professor concerned, and the students present in the scheduled
class of different lab rooms of the College of Engineering of National University.
