Overview
Smart Wi-Fi enables advantage to telecom operators of free un-licenses airwave of Wi-Fi
networks to deliver an improved mobile broadband experience in terms of voice and data
without costly network expansion and by using existing network elements.
Wi-Fi Offload for data and VoWiFi for voice offloaded to un-license airwaves without
compromising with security, privacy and price to user smoothly and vice-versa.
Mobile data is future for Telecom Companies and this shows significantly high growth in data
consumption in mobile users. Applications which carry voice over Wi-Fi, high bandwidth
applications, better coverage and video streaming with live TV and live events showed how and
why mobile broadband and the services that run over it will shape the future of every nation and
every industry in the future.
With mobile network evolution towards 3G and 4G based services, Mobile Network Operators
are suffering for better signal strength & coverage and need to reduce the capex due to costly
licensed airwaves with stress on requirement of seamless mobile broadband experience,
especially in the indoors where most of mobile traffic is generated, MNOs need to meet those
expectations if they want to be ahead in the race. Smart Wi-Fi solutions are deployed to address
data hungry smart phones demand with seamless offload of data and voice.
ANDSF is the most complete 3GPP approach for controlling offloading between 3GPP and non-
3GPP access networks (such as Wi-Fi). The purpose of the ANDSF is to assist user devices to
discover access networks in their vicinity and to provide rules (policies) to prioritize and manage
connections to all networks.

Why Smart Wi-Fi?
Seamless Wi-Fi offload is the new mass-market business opportunity for mobile operators
(MNOs): MNOs can provision combined carrier-class Wi-Fi and mobile services today and profit
from offering consumers a vast service improvement with convenient always-on data
connectivity.
Many of the worlds biggest carriers already recognize Wi-Fi as a business-critical, strategic
technology.
The drivers for Wi-Fi offload are well known: Wi-Fi-capable devices are everywhere and more
than a billion of them are equipped with SIM cards. For many users of tablets, smartphones and
laptops, studies indicate that Wi-Fi has become the preferred wireless technology. Razor-sharp
competition is forcing many MNOs to cut spending while looking for new ways to stand out in
the market.
Carrier-class Wi-Fi deployments allow MNOs to save 30-40% on network CAPEX while gaining
several thousand percent in radio network capacity in typical indoor deployments.
Carrier-class Wi-Fi is also a business opportunity for MNOs in its own right. Whether MNOs
choose to partner with existing Wi-Fi service providers (WISPs) or build their own carrier-class
Wi-Fi networks, Wi-Fi gives MNOs the opportunity to address a vast market for connectivity of
general Wi-Fi enabled devices. Since 2009 more than 9 billion Wi-Fi devices have been shipped
and in 2012 alone this number exceeded 1.5 billion, which is nearly twice the number of devices
shipped in 2011.
Todays mobile broadband subscriber typically owns three or four Wi-Fi enabled devices and a
couple of these probably do not include SIM cards. By offering Wi-Fi services for all devices the
subscriber is more likely to be loyal to the service and the MNO may as a result reduce churn.
