This paper contains SIX (6) Questions in 2 Sections. Candidates are

requested to answer ANY TWO (2) Questions from Section A and ANY
TWO (2) Questions from Section B.

Use separate answer books for each Section.

SECTION A

Answer ANY TWO (2) Questions from this Section.

Use separate answer books for each Section.

Question 1

(a) Briefly explain the technique which is used to connect gauge blocks
together. How are the assembled gauge blocks then disconnected?
Illustrate your answers with appropriate diagrams.
[4 marks]

(b) Explain the two (2) types of datum line which can be used in 2D
surface roughness measurement. Clearly outline one main advantage
and limitation (if any) of each of these 2 lines.
[5 marks]

(c) Outline the principle of operation of the transducer gauge for the
Talysurf profilometer. Give a proper schematic diagram to illustrate
your answer.
[6 marks]

(d) Explain the following 2D surface roughness parameters and comment

on the limitation of each one of them: Rt, Ra, Rsk and Rku.

Give a simple diagram/graph to illustrate the answer for each

parameter.
[10 marks]

Question 2

(a) The gap between two surfaces needs to be accurately measured using a
combination of length bars.

(i) What are length bars and how are they connected to each other?
[2 marks]

(ii) How should the combined length bars be supported in order to

carry out the measurement? Explain the theory used for the
proper support of these bars.
[5 marks]

(b) It is required to check the angle ? of the component shown in figure A.

This component has been machined on a CNC milling machine so that
? is expected to be 41? 5 36. The engineer of the company wants to
check whether the machined surface truly bears this expected angle ? ,
and he needs an accuracy of the order of 12 seconds (12 ).

Explain what instruments would be needed in order to perform the

above-mentioned angular verification. Also outline the principle of
operation of the instruments needed and the procedure to perform the
measurement/verification. The candidate is required to provide valid
reasons and clear diagrams to support his answer.
[10 marks]

(c) Explain the practical use of the following instruments and draw a
simple schematic diagram for each instrument:

(i) Plug gauges.

(ii) Ring gauges.
(iii) Gap gauges.
(iv) Feeler gauges.

Question 3

(a) Outline the V-block and In-Between Centres techniques for

determining the out-of-roundness errors of a cylindrical part. Discuss
the advantages and limitations of each of these 2 techniques. Draw
appropriate diagrams to illustrate the answer.
[10 marks]

(b) Explain the ABBEs rule of alignment. Give one instrument which
obeys this rule and one which does not. Explain your answer and give
appropriate diagrams to support your answer.
[6 marks]

(c) What are the differences between a plunger and a lever type Dial Test
Indicator (DTI)? Draw simple schematic diagrams to illustrate the
answer.
[4 marks]

(d) What surface roughness parameter can be used to analyse and simulate
the effect of wear on the load bearing and fluid retention capabilities of
a surface? Explain the mathematical equation and interpretation of this
parameter and draw diagrams to support your answer. From the
diagram(s) clearly explain how the above-mentioned capabilities can
be deduced.

SECTION B

Answer ANY TWO (2 ) Questions from this Section.

Use separate answer books for each Section.

Question 4

A moving coil meter has a resistance of 40? . When a current of 130? A flows
through it, the pointer deflection is 15.70. The moving part has a free
oscillation time period of 3.1s and a net moment of inertia of of 7.5 x 10 -6
kgm2.

(a) Determine the type of damping of the coil movement when the above
current is applied to the meter, and sketch the time variation of the
pointer deflection.
[13 marks]

(b) Explain the effect of adding a 200? resistor in series with the meter.
[4 marks]

(c) If the meter has a full scale deflection of 1mA, determine the value of
multiplier resistance necessary for measuring voltages in the range 0 to
200V dc.
[4 marks]

(d) Outline the advantages and limitations of the moving coil meter for
current measurement.
[4 marks]

Question 5

The series type ohmmeter shown in Figure Q5 uses a 9V internal battery and
has a half-scale resistance of 1k? . If the meter coil has a full-scale deflection of
3mA and a resistance R m = 75? , determine:

(a) The nominal values of R1 and R2. [9 marks]

(b) The value of R 2 to compensate for a 20% drop in the battery voltage.
[6 marks]
(c) The scale error at half-scale mark when R2 is set at the value calculated
in (b). [4 marks]
