SOLVE FOR THE TOTAL AREA OF THE PENTAGON USING HERONS FORMULA.

For I

S = 6m + 6.15m + 4.44m
2

S = 8.295m

Area = [8.295(8.295 4.44)(8.295 4.44)(8.295 4.44)]

Area = 12.5466m2
For II

S = 6.95m + 6.15m + 9.19m

2

S = 11.145

Area = [11.145(11.145 6.95)(11.145 6.15)(11.145 9.19)]

Area = 21.3672m2

For III

S = 5.51m + 9.19m + 4.84m

2

S = 9.77m

Area = [9.77(9.77 5.51)(9.77 9.19)(9.77 4.84)]

Area = 10.9091m2
Total area of the pentagonal lot:
AI + AII +AIII = Apentagon

12.5466m2 + 21.3672m2 + 10.9091m2 = 44.8229m2

The total area of the pentagon is 44.8229m2

RESEARCH

In geometry, we study about various kinds of shapes and figures. There is a family of
shapes called polygon. A polygon is a two-dimensional figure that is composed of straight line
segments bounded together. It has many angles. Triangles, square and rectangles are also types
of polygon. A triangles is a three-sided polygon, while a square and rectangle are four-sided
polygons.

Pentagon is a polygon which is quite frequently used in mathematics and other areas. The
word, "pentagon" is made up of two words - penta and gonia which means 5 angles. Thus,
pentagon is a two-dimensional shape which has 5 angles as well as 5 sides. Pentagons shape is a
closed plane and also bounded by straight sides.

There are two types of pentagons - regular and irregular. A regular pentagon has 5 equal
straight sides and 5 equal angles. While, an irregular pentagon does not have all sides and angles
equal. Usually, in geometry, we usually use a regular pentagon. Though, an irregular one is also
frequently used in more practical areas. A diagram of a regular pentagon is shown below. It has
shown equal sides whose length is "a".
CONCLUSION

Determining the area of the polygon using only the tape by dividing the area into three
triangles was a time consuming job because we need to measure first the sides of the polygon
and then the diagonals.

In this field work, we are able to prove that the area of triangle is constant regardless of
what formula you used. It should be constant because if not, there is a human error. Thus, in
solving a polygons area, you dont necessarily memorize all the formula. Instead, divide the
polygon into triangles and solve for its area. You will only need 3 parts of the triangle to solve its
area. Sum up all the area of the triangle present, youll come up with the polygons area. In this
way, your life will not be complicated as we thought. In other words, solving a more complicated
problem will always lead you to the basic way of solving it. You just need to master the basic
and everything follows.

According from the lecture being discussed, these methods should have yielded the same
area. The common sources of error on this field work are the inaccurate reading of measurements
and human errors. Human errors include the reading of measurements of the sides, included
angle, and diagonal of the polygonal field even if the measuring tape is not totally perpendicular
to the ground.

RECOMMENDATIONS

It is recommended to have patience in doing the field work because this field work has so
much part and a lot to be done. Also check first if the measuring tape is completely perpendicular
to the ground before recording the measurement to lessen the error that might be acquired. Using
a plumb bob is also recommended to see if the measuring tape is perpendicular to the ground.
Follow the instructions on the manual carefully to avoid errors.
