Chancellor's
Message
Ancient Indian culture has a very rich heritage of knowledge in literally all aspects of life. Entrenched in the
uniquely precise language of Sanskrit, this knowledge bank covers various streams including the sciences,
the arts, economics, politics, philosophy, psychology and even organisational leadership; in fact, no field of
human endeavour remains untouched by this vast treasury of wisdom.

It is an unfortunate reality, however, that such an impressive body of well-tested knowledge has been
obscured from society, particularly in terms of its application potential, through the passage of time.
Chinmaya University aims to reverse that trend by cultivating scholarship designed to rediscover, revive and
restore such knowledge to its rightful place in our collective mind, in an innovative and practical manner that
also enables this intellectual capital to grow and find new expression in the modern-day context.

Concretely, the university seeks to incrementally offer a wide range of programmes in the discipline of
Sanskrit and Indic traditions, extending to even the performing arts, thereby serving the needs of a variety of
students. Academic exploration here is enhanced by studies in character development, with the larger aim
of empowering students not only for independent, critical thinking, but also holistic growth and
self-unfoldment.

It is additionally a goal of the University to enable its students to become employable in whatever their
chosen field. Imbued with a wider vision of the world and a deep knowledge of their innermost self,
graduates can then, it is hoped, effectively participate in nation-building while embodying the noble spirit of
service to humanity.

The dynamic rishi culture of ancient India whose achievements influenced the history of Asia as we know
it left its hallmark of excellence on multiple fields of knowledge, many of these contributions still buried in
the dust of indifference or prejudice, and awaiting rediscovery. But the task of reinterpreting them for a
particular generation always falls to a truly extraordinary soul. In our times, that exceptional soul has been
Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, whose demonstration of creativity and conviction, alone has been
the inspiration for the remarkable nature of Chinmaya University and its mission to exceed excellence. We
bow to that great exemplar of the highest possible knowledge, and solicit His blessings along with Pujya
Guruji Swami Tejomayanandas, for the success of this most special institution.

Vice Chancellor's
Message

Education is truly valuable only when it leads to flowering of the true personality
of young minds and help them bring out the best in them towards a larger cause
of nation building. A young mind with self-confidence, pride in his/her own rich
heritage and a frame of mind and skills to address the contemporary issues
faced in the society is the building block of a progressive society. We at
Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth are truly committed to developing such
individuals through our educational programmes.

There are no short-cuts to excellence it is the collective effort of the faculty,

management and students that will get us closer to achieving our dream. I look
forward to working with all our stakeholders and well-wishers in this
challenging journey towards our goal. It is our collective responsibility to realise
the maxim that Shri Krishna laid out in Bhagavad Gita: nahi jnena sadam
pavitramiha vidyate there is nothing more pristine than knowledge.

It is my pleasure to welcome every student and the parent sharing this vision
into the portals of the University. I am confident that you will feel proud on being
associated with us and make us equally proud with your academic excellence.

Best Personal Regards,

Prof. B. Mahadevan

Why Chinmaya
Vishwavidyapeeth?

The Chinmaya University (CU) is a unique initiative by Chinmaya Mission, whose trajectory
is truly inspiring for the youth. The University seeks to address the deep desire that young
minds have to know about Sanskrit, Ancient Indian Knowledge Traditions, the uniqueness
of our Performing Art forms and so on. with a clear attempt and emphasis in making it
currently relevant. To be amidst the beauty and vibrancy of the very place where Adi
Shankaracharya, the great spiritual luminary of this country was born, or embrace the lap of
nature at the vision center for Swami Chinmayananda, one of the greatest national Icons
who blended spirituality with modern education, is in itself a once in a life time opportunity.
Moreover, the University is guided by people with several years of rich experience in IIT/IIM
and globally reputed educational institutions and by some of the stalwarts in the field of
Sanskrit and Performing Arts. Here is why you may want to join the academic program at
CU:
An opportunity to get associated with a renowned noble institution that has invested
greatly in bridging the old with the new, East with the West and the youth with culture and
wisdom;

Creating a platform for pursuing your passions in higher education yet working towards
your goal of pursuing gainful employment;
Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth | 8
A practicable and innovative plan to meaningfully teach Sanskrit and Ancient Indian
Knowedge Traditions (AIKT) as also truly create performing artists from the University
System yet rooted in the guru-shisya parampara;

A promise not just to impart teaching but to invest in blossoming the inner personality;

A second to none infrastructure tuned to Learning and Development' of individuals;

Expertise and Know-how to bring in practices from the best educational institutions in the
country.

Uniqueness of the Academic Programmes

At Kochi Campus: Sanskrit language is one of the most wonderful languages known to
mankind and its application in the ancient Indian knowledge traditions is indeed very valuable.
Not surprisingly, there is a genuine need amongst the youngsters to know about our own
heritage and its role in solving some of the vexing problems that the society faces today. Our
goal at Chinmaya University is to empower students with the sound understanding of Ancient
Indian Knowledge Traditions and their practical applications along with relevant modern
subjects that can empower them and lead to gainful employment too. The University aims to
transform them into valuable citizens of the nation blossoming forth with inner growth and
outer skill thus positively impacting the country and the world at large.

Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth | 9
At Pune Campus: The present-day educational programmes in the field of Performing Arts
are not very effective in bringing a truly performing artist from the university system. This is
primarily on account of not being able to blend it seamlessly with the gurukula system of
education. There is a great synergy between Performing Arts, Sanskrit and Ancient Indian
Knowledge Traditions. The programmes offered at Chinmaya University are unique in
bridging this gap. The entire pedagogy will be anchored in the guru-shishya-parampara
providing ample opportunity for the student to learn in-depth and gain experience through
actual performances. Allied streams of knowledge will be added to provide variety of gainful
avenues for the students.

The programs offered at Chinmaya University are not driven merely by the goal of seeking
jobs. In addition to making our students employable, we are also keen to make them fulfil their
inherent passion for depth in knowledge and heartfelt goals for making stellar contributions in
society. Our belief is that only such an education can make a person fully developed and
successful in the long run.

pertaining to the programme is given below:

Music has a sacred bearing on human lifestyle, nay, even on plant and animal life. For the practitioner, it is
an art as well as science. In India, the treasure of this knowledge has passed on from one generation to
another in the aural tradition for years together. The purity and beauty of the tradition has been maintained
to a great extent because of the Gurukula tradition, where the Guru would personally mould the disciple into
a performer.
When music got introduced in the classrooms, it was made available to the public. While there was
standardization and formalization of music, the intimate teaching and learning experience of the Gurukula
style was slowly diluted.
This Integrated Masters in performing arts in different disciplines is intended to have the best of both, the
Gurukula Mode as well as the modern-day college/university models.

Performance-oriented study and practice of select Raagas/Taalas will be undertaken along with
supporting theoretical aspects of the subject. Due importance will be given to subjects like Sanskrit,
English, Indian Knowledge Systems and other Foundation Course subjects.

Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth | 22
