Ascissorliftwithsensitiveelectronicsequipmentneededtobeanalyzedtodeterminethewind
conditionsitcouldwithstand.ThemodelwasbuiltwithclientsuppliedCADgeometry(see
Figure1).
Thetippingforcewascalculatedatvaryingextensionheights.Thecomputationalfluid
dynamics(CFD)analysiswasruntodeterminetheforceonthestructureatvaryingwind
speeds.TheseforceswereverifiedagainstwindloadcalculationsfromASCE702,Minimum
DesignLoadsforBuildingandOtherStructures.Atypicalcalculationtablecanbeseenbelowin

seeninFigure2andatypicalvelocitymagnitudeplotcanbeseeninFigure3.
TheCFDstudyallowedtheclienttogiveawindratingwithhighconfidence.Itadditionally
savedtheclientthousandsofdollarssincetheydidnotneedtodophysicalwindtunneltesting.
