STAAD PRO

STAAD PRO Structural analysis and Designing Professional

Introduction:

Extension of the STADD input file is .std

Procedure:

1. Creating a wireframe model.

2. Giving properties.
3. Assigning supports.
4. Analysis.
5. Design using code books.

Wireframe creation:

Three methods

Staad editor
Using co-ordinates
Clicking method

Staad editor:

Basic terms are

Staad space
JOI COO

1ST NODE 1 0 0 0

2ND NODE 2 3 0 0

3RD NODE 3 6 0 0

MEM INC(member incidence)

1(beam number) 1 2(node)

223

CLICKING METHOD:

Draw the necessary structure

To get grid select the tab geometry it will automatically display the grid pattern.
Press crtl for placing node alone

TRASLATIONAL REPEAT:

Draw a column. Join the column nodes

Select the column and go to translational repeat.
For rooms in ground floor select the X-Y axis and give the default step spacing as the
spacing of the room dimensions.
Link steps and provide open base.

BAY FRAME:

To draw a bay frame,

Go to geometry option
Select run structural wizard.
Select bay frame from drop down box.
Select the width, height and width
Close the dialogue box. And merge it to the main tool pallets

EDITING A BEAM:

Insert node:

Geometry insert node. Provide the distance required and click on OK.

Node at intersect:

To insert a node between the intersections of the two beams select the beams - go to
geometry intersect selected members intersect to create the node.

Stretch beam:

Geometry stretch selected member. Give the required distance and apply.

WORK FLOW:

1. Creation of models
2. Properties, material and support assignment
3. Application of load
4. Analysis
5. Design
a. Pre-analysis design
b. Post-analysis design

3. APPLICATION OF LOADS:

To apply loads to the building

a. Go to load and definitions

b. Select add on load case details
c. Select the dead load and press OK
d. Select the created load and click on add and select the loading case and press ok
e. Then assign to view

3. A. SPECIAL LOADS:

Seismic loads:

To apply seismic loads;

a. Go to load & definition

b. Select the definition seismic definition.
c. Select IS code and click generate.
d.

Shortcuts:

Ctrl+B Shows beam number

Ctrl+K Displays nodes

Shift + I Global UCS

Shift + O Local UCS

R.C. DESINGS:

Create the model and define respective materials and loading conditions
Give fy and fck in the design concrete IS-456 define commands
Run the analysis
Go to concrete design tab
Give the job title (if necessary)
Go to envelope new envelope and give name
Select the load case details
Create members and select the beams
Then members auto form members
Then go to groups/briefs
Design a new brief and select eh proper IS code
Design a new group and select the brief
Select the members (beams) and right click add members to design group
Click on add and click OK
Then go to concrete member design click on design on the pop up box

EARTHQUAKE DESIGN:

For the earthquake design,

Define the materials and support for the members

In loadings and definition
o Initially setup the seismic definition under the popup box
o Give the IS code and generate the values
Assign load case details as follows,
o Add load case details
o Give loading type as seismic loads
o Add different loads in different directions
o I.e.
Rename as EQ x+ve - add
EQ X-ve - add
EQ Z+ve - add
EQ Z-ve - add
After adding the seismic loads then add the dead and live load.
Then analysis the structure.

WIND LOADS:

Define the materials and supports

Add wind load definition in loading and definitions
Generate the loading in wind load. Click on add
Give the factor as 1 or 0.8 and add
Add load case details as follows,
o Give loading type as wind then do the following
Wind load on X+ - add
X-ve add
Z+ve - add
Z ve add
o Select on the first load case detail i.e. wind load on X+
o Add wind load in X direction
o For ve direction give x direction
o Similarly do for Z direction also.

Note: give the minimum limit as 1st floor level (3m or 10 ft. like that) and maximum level as top
floor level.
