three years' full-time postgraduate experience where the management of people and

Why this course?
Our MSc in data analytics is designed to create rounded data analytics problem-solvers.
This course focuses on the uses of data analytics techniques within business contexts, making informed
decisions about appropriate technology to extract knowledge from data and understanding the theoretical
principles by which such technology operates.
You'll gain a comprehensive skill set that will enable you to work in a variety of sectors using a blended
learning approach that combines theory, intensive practice and industrial engagement.
Strathclyde's MSc in data analytics is unique by bringing together essential skills from three departments,
Management Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer & Information Sciences (CIS), in order to
address the needs of a fast-growing industry.
This collaboration avoids the narrow interpretation of this subject offered by competitor institutions and
presents significant opportunities for businesses to recruit data analytics experts with a high-level expertise
and knowledge.
What youll study
The course will have a duration of 1 year, with two semesters of classes (120 credits in total) followed by an
MSc dissertation project (60 credits) during the summer.
The class Data Analytics in Practice (20 credits) will be run over both semesters to provide you with a
practical environment to apply methodological learnings from other classes into challenging projects from
industry.
Semester 1
Semester 1 will additionally consist of five 10-credit core modules as listed under 'Course Content' which will
provide the technical background to students. The contributions in Semester 1 will be split evenly between
three departments.
This semester is designed to provide you with the fundamental technical analytics knowledge from all three
departments.
Computer & Information Sciences courses will cover core techniques including machine learning and data
mining as well as data visualisation and big data platforms
Mathematics courses will ensure you gain strong computational skills while establishing a broad knowledge
of statistical tools essential for analytics
Management Science courses will build the foundations of business skills including problem structuring as
well as decision analysis, in addition to providing essential practical skills
Semester 2
Semester 2 will additionally consist of a 10-credit core module as well as 40 credits worth of elective modules.
To ensure breadth of knowledge, you'll be required to choose electives from at least two departments. This
semester is designed to extend your core skills and provide you with opportunities through a broad range of
electives to specialise in areas that you are particularly interested to excel.
The only technical core class will provide you with a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of
optimisation techniques essential for data analytics, whereas each of the three departments will offer four to
five elective courses, the majority of which are accessible to everyone on the course without any prerequisites.
The final component of the MSc course will be a summer dissertation project, which can be completed either
through a client-based project or a desk-based research project, depending on your interests. You will submit
your dissertation in September to complete your degree requirements (pending any resits).
Work placement
You will have optional opportunities to complete your MSc summer dissertation projects in client-based
projects, where a number of host organisations will be arranged by the department. These projects will be
normally unpaid, however, all costs such as travel and accommodation will be covered by the host
organisation if out of town.
Major projects
The taught modules on the programme introduce you to a variety of tools, techniques, methods and models.
However, the practical reality of applying analytical methods in business is often far removed from the
classroom. Working with decision-makers on real issues presents a variety of challenges.
For example, data may well be ambiguous and hard to come by, it may be far from obvious which data
analytics methods can be applied and managers will need to be convinced of the business merits of any
suggested solutions. While traditional teaching can alert students to such issues, understanding needs to be
reinforced by experience.
This is primarily addressed by the core module Data Analytics in Practice, which takes place over both
semesters. Every year, case studies and challenging projects are presented to our students by various
organisations.
Facilities

The course is delivered in various ways. While most classes have regular lectures, tutorials and hands-on
software sessions, experiential learning is a crucial part of the course. This is delivered through projects and
case studies with various external organisations, and MSc projects.
There are also guest lectures and recruitment events throughout the year, as well as a number of career support
sessions that provide you with invaluable career information and generic job hunting skills such as CV writing
and how to handle interviews.
Assessment
Every module has its own methods of assessment appropriate to the nature of the material. These include
written assignments, exams, practical team projects, presentations and individual projects. Many modules
involve more than one method of assessment to realise your potential.
Entry requirements
MSc
Second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in mathematics, the natural sciences, engineering, or
economics/finance. Applications from those with other degrees are also encouraged if you have demonstrated
a good grasp of numerical/quantitative subjects.
PgDip
Minimum of a pass degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject. Subject to performance diploma students
may transfer from the diploma course to the MSc.
English language requirements

If youre a national of an English speaking country recognised by UK Border Agency (please check most up-
to-date list) or you have successfully completed an academic qualification (at least equivalent to a UK
bachelor's degree) in any of these countries, then you do not need to present any additional evidence.
For others, the department requires a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual component
below 5.5 (or equivalent)). Pre-sessional courses in English are available.

Careers
The aim of the MSc in data analytics is to develop graduates who can use data analytics technology,
understand the statistical principles behind the technologies and understand how to apply these technologies to
solve business problems.

The MSc in Forensic Science is the UKs longest established forensic science degree course, celebrating its

Following a general introduction to forensic science in semester 1, you can choose to specialise in either
forensic biology or forensic chemistry. As a forensic biologist youll study a range of topics including:

If you choose to specialise in forensic chemistry, youll develop expertise in:

The focal point of the course is our major crime scene exercise, in which you are expected to investigate your
own mock outdoor crime scene, collect and analyse the evidence, and present this in Glasgow Sheriff Court in
conjunction with students training in Strathclyde Law School.
Project
In semester 3, MSc students undertake a three-month project, culminating in the production of a dissertation.
Students may be given the opportunity to complete their project in an operational forensic science provider
either in the UK or overseas (subject to visa requirements). Alternatively, students may complete their project
within the Centre for Forensic Science itself, under the supervision of our team of academics.

The MSc in Forensic Science runs for 12 months, commencing in September.
Facilities
Teaching takes place in the Centre for Forensic Science. Its a modern purpose-built laboratory for practical
forensic training, equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for analysis of a wide range of evidence types.
This includes a microscopy suite, DNA profiling laboratory, analytical chemistry laboratory, blood pattern
analysis room, and a suite for setting up mock crime scenes.

Assessment
Assessment consists of written coursework, practical work assessments, oral presentations and formal written
examinations. Practical work is continually assessed and counts towards the award of the degree. The project
is assessed through the completion of a dissertation.

MSc Forensic Science students have additional costs associated with their three-month project. Students are
expected to meet all costs including travel and accommodation. This is determined by the project location.
All students are responsible for printing and binding costs associated with their dissertation, and students
working on external/overseas projects will be expected to pay the cost of posting this to the university.

Careers
Most forensic scientists in Scotland are employed by the Scottish Police Authority.
In the rest of the UK, forensic scientists are employed by individual police forces, private forensic science
providers such as LGC Forensics and Cellmark Forensic Services, or government bodies such as the Centre for
Applied Science and Technology (CAST) and the Defence Science Technology Laboratory (DSTL).
Outside of the UK, forensic scientists may be employed by police forces, government bodies or private
companies.
Forensic scientists can specialise in specific areas such as crime scene examination, DNA analysis, drug
analysis, and fire investigation.
Most of the work is laboratory-based but experienced forensic scientists may have to attend crime scenes and
give evidence in court.
How much will I earn?

Starting salaries are around 20,000 a year and can increase to 35,000 with experience. Senior forensic
scientists can earn 45,000 or more*

Why this course?
Throughout the globe, the issues of water scarcity, water security, water economics and health and sanitation
all rely on high-quality hydrogeology knowledge. This MSc will prepare you as a functional hydrogeologist to

Youll study
The MSc involves a curriculum of eight core classes and a range of optional classes. Each module is taught
two to three hours per week over eight to 11 weeks.
Alternatively, the Open Access programme allows professionals to take single modules for Continuous
Professional Development (CPD) purposes, or build up towards six modules to gain a Postgraduate Certificate.
MSc research project

Following successful completion of the taught component, youll undertake a dissertation project. We
encourage you to complete this overseas. Our MSc course leader has extensive contacts in arid countries such
as Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, the Middle East and Asia, giving you valuable, varied learning
opportunities and practical experience around the world.
Field camp
In the spring semester you go on a week-long field camp in Scotland. Youll get the opportunity to put much
of the learned theory into practice.
Site visits introduce you to the geology and hydrogeology of the study area. Youll gain practical experience in
conducting pump tests, recovery tests and chemical sampling.
Work placement
As part of the class Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry you undertake a work placement where
you report to the offices of a hydrogeological organisation and actively contribute to one of their ongoing
projects.
This is a very valuable experience for you as it allows you to work as hydrogeologists for a number of weeks
exposing yourself to a working environment as well as allowing you to build up contacts within industry.
Attendance
One year full-time study involves attendance at classes over two terms, plus a dissertation during the third
term.
Part-time (open to UK/EU students only) involves class attendance in Years 1 & 2 and a dissertation in Years 2
or 3. Depending on timetables, just two days work release per week may be needed for 24 weeks in the year.
You can also study this course part-time through online distance learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible
learning mode of study.

Professional Development Courses

This is initially a non-graduating route. You'll register for one 10 credit class at a time, and have the option to
build up credits. This will eventually lead to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You
can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.
This option is popular with students in employment, who might want to take classes for Continuing
Professional Development purposes.
A range of qualifications will be considered for entry.
Distance learning
You can also study this course by Distance Learning, which is based on three years part-time study of 60
credits per year.
This allows you to complete the course by studying online at home at a time that suits you, without attending

Entry requirements
A first or upper-second-class Honours degree, or overseas equivalent in a non-Marketing discipline. A Business

degree may be considered, provided it does not contain significant Marketing components.
English language proficiency must be at IELTS 6.5 minimum.
Selection process
The selection process for this programme is based on information relating to your past academic performance
and qualifications as well as work and life experiences, determining your suitability for the programme. For this
reason, the completion rate is extremely high. Students who are committed to their studies and perform at the
academic level required will complete the programme successfully.

be at least 24 years of age.
have a minimum of three years' full-time postgraduate experience where the management of people and
resources has played a significant role.
Entry at Diploma level may be offered to applicants who do not hold sufficient recognised degree level
qualifications, but who do:
hold non-degree/professional qualifications plus at least five years' varied management experience.
have no formal qualifications but extensive and varied management experience (10 or more years).
are exceptional candidates over the age of 24 with a minimum of two years' managerial experience. This is
available only to candidates applying to routes other than full-time.
Admissions testing
Although the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is not a standard requirement of our admissions
process, strong verbal reasoning and numerical abilities are critical for the MBA and we may ask you to
undertake such a test.
Competence in English
The MBA programme is highly interactive and requires a high level of competence in English speaking, writing,
reading and understanding. A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS is required for those applicants whose first
language is not English. We may consider applicants who fall slightly below these standards if they're willing to
undertake pre-sessional study.
Computer competence
In order to undertake the Diploma/MBA you need to be competent in word processing, the use of spreadsheets
and in report writing.
The application process

Completed application forms are considered by the Admissions Committee as they're received. Youre
encouraged to submit your application form and all the supporting documentation as soon as possible.
Once all the details are with us you should receive a decision within three or four weeks of application.

This course is one of the oldest sustainability courses in the UK. It

turns 25 years old this year!
This course offers a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of environmental management, policy, the circular
economy, sustainability and sustainable development in both developed and developing countries.
The course began in 1992, hot on the heels of the Rio Earth Summit that brought to light sustainable
development, climate change and biodiversity as issues of national and international concern. Youll learn about
major environmental issues and the circular economy. You'll understand the methods in which environmental
considerations and climate change are used in development and planning decisions. You'll be expected to probe,
for example, strategies and policy options for achieving sustainable development without increasing the
ecological footprint of economic activities.

The MSc involves a curriculum of three core classes and a very wide range of optional classes. Each module is
taught two to three hours per week over eight to 11 weeks.
In addition, you'll also undertake a dissertation between June and August. Progress to the dissertation is
dependent on performance in the instructional modules.
Entry requirements
Normally, a first or upper second-class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent overseas
qualification) in any degree discipline all backgrounds considered, including social sciences, arts,
engineering, law, chemistry, maths, physics, geology, biology and business.
Lower degree classifications might be considered if there is strength elsewhere (for example, relevant work
experience, excellent final project/dissertation, very strong academic letter of reference, very strong application
statement linking with career goals.)
For candidates whose first language is not English, documentary evidence of an appropriate level of
competency of written and spoken English must be provided. The minimum standards are an IELTS minimum
