1. Abstract.

High performance adaptive solutions are capable of responding to the dynamic nature of

users and context. These innovative and dynamic systems are steadily gaining ground over

ubiquitous best t static models. These architectural elements often exist beyond the scope

of mainstream building standards and traditional methods for data representation or

communication. This presents major challenges to a highly standardized and

compartmentalized industry in which innovation is limited to a few signature practices that

design iconic yet expensive structures, which often prioritize aesthetics over performance.

This paper oers an overview of the benets that integrated dynamic systems bring to

buildings. Through an examination of an applied practice, this paper oers guidelines for

communicating in a clear design language across interdisciplinary collaborations. The use of

diagrammatic grammar to translate underlying algorithmic rules in to instructions for design

allows complex, innovative solutions to be realized more eectively. The ideas presented here

are based on the design principles of the competition-winning scheme of the Dynamic

Towers. The pair of towers won recognition for its performance-driven form, and dynamic

facade that operates following the movement of the sun.

2. Introduction

2.1 Definition

Dynamic (of a process or system) characterized by constant change, activity, progress, or

movement.

The life today is dynamic, also the space in which we live should be dynamic, adaptable to our

requirements that change continuously, to our concept of design and to our humour. Dynamic

architecture should think, move, react and adapt.

2.2 About

High performance adaptive solutions are capable of responding to the dynamic nature of

users and context. These innovative and dynamic systems are steadily gaining ground over

ubiquitous best t static models. These architectural elements often exist beyond the scope

of mainstream building standards and traditional methods for data representation or

communication.

In Santiago Calatrava Dynamic Equilibrium, Santiago Calatrava says that The newest modern

architecture design concept is called Dynamic Architecture. Modern architecture skyscrapers

will keep moving, forever changing their shape to better fit nature and your imagination. 1

Guiding us to the start of a new conception in Architecture, a concept of buildings in motion.

New era in the architecture, a challenge to the traditional architecture.

3. Concept

Buildings in motion which can be found in many shapes such as Static-Dynamic (Form,

Textures, Colours), Partially-Dynamic (specific spaces, elevations, Interior partitions,

Furniture), Fully-Dynamic (the whole Building can rotate, revolve, swivel or pivot).2

One of the latest design trends that seems to have found appeal among some architects is a

towering skyscraper that twists its way up to the top. Possibly the first, modern, twisted

skyscraper constructed was the Turning Torso in Malm, Sweden. It is designed by the Spanish

architect Santiago Calatrava and officially opened on 27 August 2005.

These buildings provide the possibility to orient the own space: - according to the moments

of the day (sun & light). - in relation to the seasons. - in relation to the surrounding

environment (views). - For the purposes of protection and defence - or simply to own

pleasure.3

After the successful completion of the Turning Torso, designers started proposing similar

audacious structures elsewhere. Many projects got shelved, others were passed and built,

and a handful of them are currently under construction.

This new conception of architecture will not only change the aspect of cities, but also the idea

of modernity, beyond the relationship between buildings and who lives in, and between

buildings and the atmosphere that accommodates them. Maintaining an only architectonic

structure, always in evolution. 4

The construction method and the ability to produce energy on its own are two of the most

outstanding features of Dynamic Architecture buildings. These buildings are made of

prefabricated units, custom-made in a workshop, to fit very high quality standards, resulting

in fast construction, cost savings and fewer people on site. modern architectures will not be

confined to rigid shapes; construction will have a new approach and flexibility. Cities will

change faster than we ever imagined.

4. Factors

Dynamic Architecture is concerned with buildings that are designed to adapt to their

environments, their inhabitants and objects as well as those buildings that are entirely driven

by internal data.

An architect should be a catalyst for positive change in the nature of buildings, cities and if

possible our lives. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to consider the entire context of

architecture and to nurture innovation. Architects are degenerated into beautiers of

buildings and not involved into the whole process. The focus is on appeal rather than

functional innovations and smart design.5

Dynamic Architecture is concerned with buildings that are designed to adapt to their

environments, their inhabitants and objects as well as those buildings that are entirely driven

by internal data. The term is an attempt to incorporate what people imply when they talk

about flexible, interactive, responsive or indeed media architecture, the mounting interest in

this emerging field being demonstrated by the large variety of recent publications.6

There are many factors that inuence architectural aspirations. Both governmental and public

sectors demand increased performance, and improved eciency. Environmental concerns

and global economic diculties require innovative solutions being created with ever

diminishing resources. The world is rapidly changing. Our ideas and creations should change

as well.

Dynamic buildings provide the possibility to orient the own space: - according to the moments

of the day (sun & light). - in relation to the seasons. - in relation to the surrounding

environment (views). - For the purposes of protection and defence - or simply to own

pleasure.

5. Example: - Dynamic Towers by David Fisher

The philosophy of the space evolves with proceeding of the time. Dr. Fisher describes its

Rotating Tower as planned from the Life, forged from the time.

Each floor, in fact, can rotate separately, changing every second the shape of the building.

You can therefore wake up with the sun rising into your bedroom and enjoy the sunset over

the ocean at dinner time. The Rotating Skyscraper takes on shapes imposed by time and life,

never appearing the same in any two given moments. It is the first building to have four

dimensions: Designed by TIME, shaped by LIFE.7

The second revolution that the Dynamic Skyscraper brings is the method of construction. To

this futuristic design solution, David Fisher has added another unique innovation:

Prefabrication. It is in fact the first building produced in a factory, giving construction a new

industrial approach. The entire building, aside from the concrete core, is made of

prefabricated units which arrive to the construction site completely finished, including

flooring, water piping, air conditioning and all finishes. These units, made of steel, aluminium,

carbon fibre and other high quality modern materials, are installed mechanically on site,

offering luxury finishing, very fast construction time, usage of a limited number of workers,

thus reducing site risks and enabling cost savings. The building, made of single separate

floors, is structurally sound and flexible at the same time, being of very high seismic

resistance.8

The third revolution is born from combining technology and luxury with environment. The

skyscraper's wind turbines, positioned horizontally between each floor, and solar ink on its

many roofs will produce energy making the tower the first self-powered building. Thus the

Rotating Tower, a unique architectural solution, becomes also a "power station" producing

green energy for the city.9

Dynamic/Rotating towers and skyscrapers, allow tenants to select their favourite view at any

moment, following the sun or letting the apartment rotate slowly to enjoy the view. This

means that the Tower's external shape and profile change constantly, projecting a new

perception of architecture: what was motionless has become dynamic.

The Rotating Tower brings three main futuristic aspects, three revolutions:

1. The shape of the building changes continuously: Buildings as Part of the Environment,

adjusting to the sun and the wind, to the view and to our momentary requirements.

Each floor, in fact, can rotate separately, changing every second the shape of the

building.10

2. The method of construction (Prefabrication) It is in fact the first building produced in

a factory, giving construction a new industrial approach. The entire building, aside

from the concrete core, is made of prefabricated units which arrive to the construction

site completely finished, including flooring, water piping, air conditioning and all

finishes. These units, made of steel, aluminium, carbon fibre and other high quality

modern materials, are installed mechanically on site.11

3. The combining technology and luxury with environment: The skyscraper's wind

turbines, positioned horizontally between each floor, and solar ink on its many roofs

will produce energy making the tower the first self-powered building. Thus the

Rotating Tower, a unique architectural solution, becomes also a "power station"

producing green energy for the city.12

When I grew up and became an architect I understood that an architect should design

buildings that adjust to life. They should adapt to our space, our functionalities and our needs

that change continuously and even to our sense of beauty, itself in continuous motion.13

This is the new philosophy of dynamic buildings, adjusting to sunrise and sunset, to the wind

and to the view thus becoming part of nature.

I call these buildings Designed by Time, Shaped by Life.14
