    The Japanese 31st Army was formed in 1944 as a garrison force to defend the South Seas Mandate islands from Allied invasion during World War II. It was initially headquartered on Truk with around 80,000 soldiers divided between the Southern Marianas, Northern Marianas, and Truk garrison forces. After Allied operations isolated its forces on Truk and other central Pacific islands, the 31st Army faced starvation and was destroyed before Japan's surrender in 1945.
