DOP affect the properties

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Many polymer properties are affected by
the length of the polymer chains
The same polymer material can have
quite different properties if it is produced
with a different molecular weight

PE

PC

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

The same polymer from different sources may
have different molecular weight

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Entanglement of polymer chains

(a) Low molecular weight (b) High molecular weight

The minimum molecular weight required

for good physical and mechanical
properties for many important polymers
is 25000 g/mol.
MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Molecular weight data for a poly-tetrafluoroethylene material
are tabulated. Compute (a)the number-average molecular
weight,(b) the weight-average molecular weight, and (c)the
degree of polymerization.

C = 12.01 g/mol
F = 19 g/mol

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Goal of making polymers make a
material with the ideal properties.

The longer the molecules (or the higher

the molecular weight) the higher the
entanglement forces

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Tensile Strength

Theories by Wool and others

more than 90% tensile strength
and other mechanical properties
are attained when the chain
reaches eight entanglement in
length

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Ductility
A higher molecular weight Increases how far the material can
stretch before rupturing (ductility)
The higher degree of entanglement allows the material to be
pulled further before the chains break

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Impact Resistant
A higher molecular weight Increases the impact resistance of
the material
The higher degree of entanglement means that in order to
rupture, more polymer bonds need to be broken, this means
that the polymer can absorb more energy before failing.

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Weather Resistant
A higher molecular weight increases the weather resistance of
the material
The chains are longer, so they can withstand more damage
before the mechanical properties will start to diminish

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Viscosity
A higher molecular weight Increases the viscosity of the
material makes it harder to process the material using
conventional methods
The longer the chains, the harder it is to get them to flow

MATERIALS AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Chemical Resistant
A higher molecular weight Increases the chemical resistance
It takes more damage to the main chains of the molecules before
it will affect the strength of the material

NATURAL POLYMER
Produced from living organism and results from only raw materials that are found in
nature

Great attention for natural polymer, WHY?

BIOCOMPATIBLE
BIODEGRADABLE
CAN BE HYDROLYSED INTO REMOVABLE AND NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS
