Dear Parents,
This week in Readers Workshop, we will read, Jazz
Baby To increase reading comprehension we will look at
these TEKS:
Recognize Text Structure (Point out that the words in
many stories follow a certain pattern. Paying attention to
how a book is organized can help them to understand it)
Make predictions (Trying to figure out what will come next
in a story can help us understand it better) Literary
Element Rhyme( Words that sound the same at the end)
and Repetition (When the same words or lines are said
throughout the poem)
This week in Writers Workshop we are learning about
the craft of making a book. In Math are working on
counting objects to 20. We will play some new games to
work on Counting and comparing and make our own counting
books. We are also learning to sort and differentiate among
manipulative materials by attending to likenesses and
differences. We are leaning to use our counting jars! In
Social Studies we will be learning about Freedom Week and
Our Country and Mexican Independence Day. We will learn
about Patriotic holidays and the Constitution. We will also
learn Patriotic words and Symbols. In Science, we will learn
about the Properties of Matter and conduct a few
experiments!
Back To School Night
Thank you for attending and showing your support! It is
going to be a great year. Thank you Katie (Olivias mother)
and Janina (Allens mother) for taking on the role as our
room parents! Thank you Diane (Elizabeths mother) for
taking on the role of our garden parent.
Ways you can support your childs learning at
home:
Have your child read to someone each night for
10-15 min.
the letters of the alphabet. If your child is ready
he/she may practice writing simple sentences
Play a word wall word game
Practice opening lunch containers and putting
straws in juice boxes.
Assessments to reinforce at home this nine weeks:
Identify at least 20 letter names
Identify at least 10 letter sounds
Write first name
Dictate or write ideas on paper using labels or simple
sentences
Identify numerals to 5
Identify shapes
Identify and sort by 1 or more attributes
Generate a set using concrete or pictorial models
These skills are for a 2 grade (basic understanding)
The expectations are higher for a grade of a 3 and
4.
All 86 word wall words were sent home on a list at Back
To School night so you can move ahead if your child
knows the words being introduced this week and the
words we have learned from the previous weeks. There
are games to practice the words your child does not
know on the back of the word wall list.

Enrichment Fees
If you have not sent your enrichment check in please
send it A.S.A.P. We are sending in deposits for field
trips and need money in the account. $44 payable to
Gullett. If you have more than one child, please write a
separate check for each.
