System Introduction
NetNumenN31 ZTE integrated network management system is the
latest-developed network management system with completed in-
tellectual property and some patent technology.
This system adopts advanced and mature network elements
structure, providing a complete set of cross-platform develop-
ment tools, modules and API based on Java. It can integrate
with many third parties conveniently. NetNumenN31 following
the design principle from bottom to top, is a highly customized,
carrier-class and cross-platform integrated network management
system which provides overall solution in allusion to network
management.
For actual needs, NetNumenN31 manages various network ele-
ments promptly, smart and economically which brings carriers with
expansibility of better social and economic profits, and the sys-
tem high expansibility ensures the system upgrading smoothly and
least strike under the conditions of expansion or adding new net-
work devices.

System Principle
Distributed NetNumenN31 network management system which adopts three-
Processing layer customer/server structure is a typical distributed application
Structure system. It divides into three parts, database server, network man-
agement server and network management client. Refer to Figure
1for details, the network management client accesses database
information and exchanges information with network elements via
network management server.

Management Function Server Group

Based on J2EE, the system supports running on various oper-
ating system platforms, including Windows and Unix.
The server supports distributing processing; it is possible to
run varied management module on different server platforms.
It can be distributed to different Java virtual machine (JVM)
for logical configuration; and for physical configuration, it can
balance the load, expanse system management scale and en-
hance system operation capability.
A management function server group can adopt XML, RMI and
CORBA to communicate with clients. A sever group consists
of different-function servers and realize following 8 functions:
performance function, fault management, configuration man-
agement, report forms management, log management, topol-
ogy management, system management and security manage-
ment.
Database group
Under the database mode, eight comparatively independent
management databases are respectively generated corre-
sponding eight management function servers. It is also
allowed to combine part management databases.
Via a packaged standard database visit interface (JDBC), the
system supports various database systems, including Oracle,
Sybase, Sql-Server, MySql, etc.
Database system can not only run on the same server platform
as network management sever side, but also can run indepen-
dently.
Client-side
NetNumenN31 supports two kinds of client-side, that is, GUI
graphic interface terminal and WEB browser terminal.

2 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 1 Product Description

The GUI graphic interface terminal provides graphic interfaces

displays regarding all management functions, and therefore
enhance the user-friendliness.
The WEB browser terminal allows users to access the network
management center through Internet or Intranet for some nec-
essary operations. JSP and Servlets on client-side cooper-
ate with the management function server together to conduct
management function.
Modular NetNumenN31 consists of a unified network management platform
Component and network element (NE) processing modules. Both client-side
Structure and server are constructed based on the Platform+NE Manager
principle, and each NE manager and management function mod-
ules are embedded in the system platform as the components.
During the installation procedure, as long as the corresponding
device types are selected, it is practical to customize the system
that manages various data products.
The platform module can fulfill the functions irrelevant to devices,
such as topology, security and system management, etc. There-
fore, during installation procedure, once one or more desired de-
vice types are selected, it is practicable to customize NMS that
manages various data products and device-independent function
modules.
Each NE manager provides detailed individualized operation in re-
lation to NEs of a same kind, such as configuration management,
performance management and alarm management, etc. During
installation procedure, once the device type is selected, the NE
manager can be released or uninstalled independently on the ba-
sis of existing platform module.
The Platform+NE Managerdesign ensures a well-structured
module for NMS.
Each NE manager, functioning independently, can fulfill the
management function regarding the NE type. Once a NE man-
ager fails, only the corresponding NE-type management func-
tion is affected, and the whole system or other NE-type man-
agement functions are still operating as before.
The NE manager can be upgraded independently. During
upgrade, it is unnecessary to interrupt services, and other
NE-type management functions are not affected.
When a new device type is added in the network, it is only
necessary to deploy a corresponding NE manager in NMS to
implement the NE-type management function. During the pro-
cedure, it is only necessary for NMS to suspend normal services
temporarily (sometimes unnecessarily), and the other NE-type
management functions are not affected.

System Architecture
NetNumen N31 adopts three-layer structure: database server,
server and client. Refer to Figure 2

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 3

NetNumen N31 Product Description and Software Installation

FIGURE 2 OVERALL STRUCTURE

For NetNumenN31, NMS server implements the data communi-

cation and information processing of managed object, database
server. Each part of NMS uses TCP/IP for inter-communication,
and upper-layer RMI, SNMP, CORBA, HTTP protocols run above
TCP/IP.
The client-side provides network management operating termi-
nals. After security verification, an operator at anywhere in net-
work can log in a client and access the network management cen-
ter through Internet or Intranet for network management opera-
tions the authority allows.

Networking Mode
Figure 3 shows the networking mode regarding NetNumenN31 ZTE
integrated network management system.

Chapter 1 Product Description

FIGURE 3 NETWORKING CHART

Two networking modes are involved: out-of-band and in-band net-

working.
1. For out-of-band networking, NetNumenN31 NEs access IP net-
work via the NE's maintenance ports, such as the Ethernet
ports on the front panel of the main control board. A simi-
lar mode also applies to the network management center ac-
cessing IP network, and thereby NMS are interconnected with
NEs. The advantage of out-of-band networking mode lies in
the network management path and service path are wholly in-
dependent, that is, even if something wrong with the service
path, network management information can still be transmit-
ted. Moreover, elements have no relations with each other, one
element defect has no effect on the management of other NEs.
2. For in-band networking, NetNumenN31 NEs access IP network
via the corresponding uplink ports. A similar mode also ap-
plies to network management center accessing IP network, and
thereby NMS are interconnected with NEs. Through this port,
NMS can communicate with each NE. The advantage of in-band
networking lies in network management information is trans-
mitted via the service path, and therefore additional network
dedicated to NMS is unnecessary. In this case, a more flexible
and convenient network is achieved.

Function Features

server-side. The client-side implements data processing
and display functions for user login interface and user se-
curity management interface. The server-side implements
the logical processing function regarding login authentica-
tion and operation authentication.
3. Systems management function
Systems management is used to manage internal databases
and IP-addressed equipment .
Database management is to query, back up and restore data-
base resources via the database management system (DBMS)
within network management system.
IP-addressed devices are the ones identified by IP addresses,
such as database server, application server, WEB servers,
workstations, PC machine, LAN switches, routers, printers,
and so on. NetNumenN31 can configure these devices, mon-
itor their performance, link states, and also generate alarms
for abnormal conditions.
4. Log management
The main functions of log management view are: log record
and log management.
Divided by contents, log records are classified into command
log, event reporting log, security logs and system logs .

i. Manage alarms from network devices
ii. Manage system alarms generated according to some run-
ning operator thresholds predefined in NetNumenN31, such
as performance alarms, and system management alarms.
iii. Monitor and manage events and notification in network.
Any of the following operations may be performed once alarms
occur.
Displays the alarm in an intuitionistic way, such as sound,
light or alarm box, to the network maintenance personnel.
Filtrates alarms according to some specified conditions.
Acknowledges/Unacknowledges the occurrence of the
alarm.
Deletes alarms.
Informs relevant persons through emails or short mes-
sages.
Queries the detailed information or events regarding
alarms.
Search the alarm handling suggestions in the correspond-
ing database (if stored when each kind of alarms occur)
when similar alarms take place.
7. Auto-detection and configuration
As an internal service, auto-detection and configuration auto-
matically operates in NetNumenN31, unnecessary for manual
startup and configuration.
NetNumenN31 can identify the specific types and attributes for
each device using SNMP, and then import concerned nodes into
the database using the filtering rules.

Note:
About 1G space should be reserved for the installation directory
of NetNumen N31 client.
Some temporary files are generated during the boot process of
NetNumen N31 client, which are stored in C:\temp by default.
Therefore, at least 150 M available space should be guaran-
teed.
During the initiation process, at least 600M space is required
for data files, and more space is required as the operation
process continues. Hence, sufficient space should be guaran-
teed for the data storage directory (generally in the installation
directory of the database). For example, for sql server, after
the installation completes, the storage directory for data files
is %SQL Install Dir%\MSSQL\Data.

NetNumen N31 Product Description and Software Installation

Caution:
Check that there is the computer with the same name. When de-
ploying an office, directly use the new computers with OSs installed
in advance to perform networking. The possibility that computers
share the same name is great. If the local computer share name
with other computers, one cannot boot the network management
system.

Steps 1. Obtain and decompress the NetNumen N31 software installa-

tion package.
Usually, the NetNumen N31 software installation packet is is-
sued in the zip format. Decompress the packet to the disk
partition of the installation target. To avoid much wrapping of
the installing directory, decompress the packet to the level-1
directory of the target disk partition. For instance, decompress
the packet to the D:\EMS directory. Figure 6 shows the instal-
lation source directory of the version after the decompression.

FIGURE 6 INSTALLATION SOURCE DIRECTORY OF THE VERSION

Caution:
The number of files and their names in the directory change
depending on the NetNumen N31 software version.

Modifying Initial Parameters

for Oracle Database
Prerequisites Oracle database is successfully installed.
Context When NetNumen N31 operates in UNIX environment, Oracle data-
base server can use any one of the following operating modes:
Oracle database independently runs in a UNIX server.
Both NetNumen N31 and Oracle database run in a UNIX server.
If the default initial parameters for the database (as specified
in /export/home/oracle/product/9.2.0/dbs/initipms.ora
file) are used, Oracle database cannot achieve the favorable
performance no matter which operating mode is used. Therefore,
to optimize the database, adjusting the initial parameters is
necessary. UNIX configuration, operating modes and available
resources jointly determine the configuration of initial parameters.
This chapter uses the modification of initial parameters regard-
ing Oracle 9.2.0 database to illustrate the procedure. The oper-
ating environment is as follows: SUNBlade1000 (512M physical
memory), SUN Solaris SPARC platform, NetNumen N31 and Ora-
cle database run in a UNIX server.
Steps 1. Right-click the mouse, and select Files > File Manager from
the pop-up menu.
The File Managerdialog box appears.
2. Access the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory, and double-click the
initipms.ora file. Modify the desired parameters. Table
13lists the initial parameters to be modified.

unchanged, still using the default values.

3. Save the modification and close the file.

Caution:
For other UNIX hardware configuration, operators other than
Oracle engineers should not modify the initial parameters re-
garding Oracle database. Otherwise, the system may work
improperly.

END OF STEPS

Result For the SUNBlade1000 (512M physical memory) configuration, af-

ter the initial parameters regarding Oracle 9.2.0 database are ad-
justed, the system achieves the optimum overall performance.

Figure 45shows the installation source directory
of the version after the decompression.
Usually, the NetNumen N31 software installation packet is is-
sued in the zip format. Decompress the packet to the disk
partition of the installation target. To avoid much wrapping of
the installing directory, decompress the packet to the level-1
directory of the target disk partition. For instance, decompress
the packet to the /netnumen directory.
