The use of Bamboo Fibers in Concrete to increase compressive and Tensile Strengths

Concrete is a product made of cement, aggregate and water to produce a mass that hardens.
However, this mass is somewhat brittle and poor in tensile strength and in most engineering
application, reinforcements are needed. Steel bars have been the chief material used for this
purpose but due to the high demand and increased cost, alternative materials are being considered
to supplement, reduce or replace the use of steel reinforcing bars in concrete. These materials are
termed fibers and can be synthetic or natural. Bamboo fibers are produced from bamboo which is
grown locally and when incorporated into the concrete mix, it has the potential to increase the
compressive and tensile strength parameters along with its toughness. With the introduction of this
fiber, the possible uses in Guyana can be exploited to save valuable financial resources.
