Further details on how your heating works

During the winter months the heat genius heating system automatically heats each room independently as required
throughout the day. During the warmer months and at night when the system isnt active you can boost it manually
directly from your radiator to provide a room with extra heat as required. The details below explain the automatic
aspect of the heating, however if you wish to boost the system temporarily please skip to the relevant section below.

Each room has an occupancy sensor that tells the system when to switch the radiator on and off depending on the
rooms current and target set temperature and whether or not someone is currently in the room.

For example: if the room is currently at 18C and set to an active target temperature of 20C and is empty it will not heat
up eventhough the room temperature is below the set active target temperature of 20C, however as soon as someone
enters the room it will start heating the room until it reaches 20C and then switch off or if the room becomes empty
before 20C is reached it will also turn itself off. If however the room is already 20C or above and someone enters the
room the system recognises that the room is already at or above the set active target temperature and the radiator will
not come on.

The Heat Genius system works in a completely different way to the more traditional heating systems you would likely
have experienced at home and so will take a bit getting used to. Most homes have either timers controlling the
heating or a single house thermostat or a combination of both, the problem with timers is that the houses temperature
peaks and troughs best described as a rollercoaster effect, so for example: if the temperature at the start of the
heating period is 16C and it is on for few hours it might reach an uncomfortably high temperature of 25C after which
the timer turns off and it gradually cools down over the next few hours to be uncomfortably cold at 16C before the
cycle starts again with another heating period that overheats the house. Alternatively with a single house thermostat
(usually in a hall or lounge) the heating system relies on that single points temperature to decide whether or not the
system should come on, so for example: if that thermostat is turned up to 20C it will only mean that room gets to 20C
before the system turns off whilst some of the other rooms in the house might only have reached 17C (due to
insulation, distance from boiler and size of radiator) whilst others might have exceeded this and reached 23C. This
situation is compounded when using a single thermostat and timers in conjunction with each other.

The Heat Genius system on the other hand aims to get your rooms up to the set active target temperature as quickly
as possible and then keep it there, so you wont get the very hot/cold temperature differences whilst in the room and
so should be much more comfortable. One thing to note is that if for example: the temperature in your room is 17C
when you enter and the target active temperature is 20C the system will recognise there is a significant temperature
gap that needs to be filled so opens the radiator valve wide allowing lots of hot water to flow through, however when it
nears the set temperature say 19-19.5C it will start closing the valve gradually over time allowing less hot water
through to prevent the temperature in the room going past the set 20C and overheat the room, therefore when the
radiator has reached or nearly reached the target temperature youll notice the radiator only being luke warm rather
than scorching hot as you might be used to under a more traditional system. In a similar example: if your room is
already at just over 19C when you enter it then the system will only partly open the valve to let a smaller amount of
heat into the room as it has already nearly reached the 20C target temperature.

Benefits of the Heat Genius system

As mentioned you end up with a much more constant comfortable temperature whilst in the room as the system has
been designed to not exceed the target temperature and to maintain it throughout the active period so the rooms
temperature remains constant and does not drop again whilst occupied.

The other main benefit is best explained by another example: lets assume there is only 1 person in a 6 bedroom
house and everyone else is out, the system can now concentrate solely on heating that one persons room (actually
the hallway radiator will be heating up as well as due technical reasons there needs to be one radiator that does not
have a valve attached called a dump radiator to allow cycling to prevent boiler damage) this means the room heats up
far far quicker. Compare this to a traditional set up where the hot water from the boiler would need to heat 11
radiators in the house rather than 2 (6 beds + lounge + kitchen + 2 bathroom + hallway) by splitting the hot water
between 11 radiators rather than just 2 it will take significantly longer to heat up the one occupied room. To take this
example further lets say 4 of those 6 rooms are now occupied and 3 have reached the 20C target temperature and the
4th one is at 19C. When a 5th person walks into his 18C bedroom the system will immediately start heating the 5th
bedroom and so most of the heat will only be divided by the 4th & 5th bedroom with slight top-ups to bedrooms 1, 2 &
3 only when they drop slightly to maintain their active set temperatures, as soon as bedroom 4 reaches 20C almost all
the hot water will be diverted to focus heating bedroom 5.

Due to the nature of the system you are only using gas to heat rooms that are actually being used which significantly
reduces your CO2 footprint as a household.

Set times & temperatures

The automatic heating starts from the 1st October and runs until the 30th April (though we reserve the right to start
this later or finish earlier if we deem it necessary) and has a set active target temperature in the rooms of 20C when
occupied, the World Health Organisation recommends a safe awake and active indoor temperature range of 18 - 21C,
but we appreciate everyone is different and this may not be ideal for you, so the system allows you to override your
rooms temperature temporarily as and when required as explained in detail in the section below.

The room sensors are set to 1 minute start and 20 minutes stop which means that if it senses you in the room for
atleast 1 minute it will start heating the room (if the target temperature hasnt been reached) and continue heating or
maintaining the target temperature until it hasnt sensed any movement for a continuous 20 minutes. This means that
as long as youre not just grabbing something in a room it should start heating it almost straight away and that after
youve left your room it will continue keeping the room at that temperature for 20 minutes so if for example you were
just getting a cup of tea from the kitchen your room wont have stopped heating during the time youre away.

The heating is set to go off at 10:30pm and back on at 6am during the winter months, if you are staying up late and
get cold you can still boost the system as described below. The living room and kitchen do not have any off periods,
so whatever time day or night you decide to congregate in the communal areas theyll start heating up for you.

Overriding (boosting) the system

There are times you may wish to boost the system to add more heat to a room, but please be conscientious with your
use of the heating as excessive use costs a lot of money and is bad for the environment, consider whether putting on
a jumper might not be a better solution. We understand however there will be situations where giving you control over
the temperature in your room will be of great benefit to you, for example if you have a cold and want to raise it above
the normal 20C or if youre staying up studying until late or watching a movie and the rooms temperature has started
dropping (remember eventhough the heating stops between 10:30pm and 6am it doesnt mean your room will
immediately be cold as the radiator may still be warm and your room retains the heat so it will only gradually get
cooler). You can override the set temperature for an hour by pressing either the blue or red buttons on either side of
the radiator valve to change the target temperature up or down for the room. After the hour is up the radiator will
revert back to the set target temperature of 20C and will need to be overridden again if you wish to boost the
temperature in your room after this period. Please only select the temperature you need, it is tempting to put it to the
highest it will go, but that will result in your room overheating and you becoming uncomfortable as well as wasting gas.

Heat Genius components

The Heat Genius system comprises from left to right:
1. House thermostat showing the temperature in the hallway and allows
the heating to be used during a system failure.
2. Heat Genius hub, this is the brains of the system and everything
communicates with it. The Hub tells the boiler when to heat each room. It
is VERY IMPORTANT never to unplug this from the power or router
otherwise your heating wont work.
3. Room sensors detect occupancy in a room and take very accurate
temperature readings of the room.
4. Radiator valves control the heat level through the radiator and also take
temperature readings. You can boost the heating directly from the valve.
5. Smart plugs, these are necessary to strengthen the Z-Wave network in the house to ensure the system can
communicate effectively please NEVER unplug/move/switch off these smart plugs as they are crucial in maintaining
a healthy system. If theyre turned off or moved from their installed location it could take longer for the system to react
to changes or might not be able to communicate at all meaning some rooms dont heat up. Being a Z-wave device it
does not interfere with the WIFI at all and you can plug your own devices into it through the passthrough socket, just
push the button on the front to turn the passthrough on or off.
Open windows

Please be aware that when the radiators controller by Heat Genius detect a sharp temperature drop over a 5 minute
period they turn the radiator off to save energy. This stops the radiators heating the room while a window above cools
it off. Once the temperature drop stops and 30 minutes have passed, the valves will allow heat into the room again if
you room needs to warm up to reach the temperature set.

4C on valve display

If the valve display is showing 4C that is simply the equivalent of OFF the reason it displays 4C is to show that it is in
frost protect mode and only if the room drops below 4C will it start heating the room. This 4C display can be quite
confusing it does not mean your room is 4C simply that the valve is in the off position it will show a new higher number
again when the valve is open and calling for heat.

Rooms heating differently

Each room is it's own zone, so your radiator might be on and the room next door might be off, this does not mean that
the other person's radiator isn't working only that their room has reached it's desired temperature so has stopped
calling for heat. There are a number of factors that affect this, for example the length of time a room has been
occupied or size of radiator in each room, also some are better insulated than others for example the difference
between inner rooms vs rooms with lots of outside walls and rooms on different floors where heat rises.

Holidays

Over the Christmas holidays we turn the heating off completely and put it on frost protect mode, please do not turn the
boiler off or unplug the Heat Genius hub as that will prevent the house from being protected from burst pipes whilst
empty. We ask that you please email us if you will be living in the house during this period so that we can keep your
room and communal areas heated.

Troubleshooting

If the boiler has stopped working (i.e. no hot water and heating) please contact the home emergency cover provided to
you as it would indicate a boiler problem rather than with the Heat Genius system. If the hot water is working, but
there is a heating issue please work through the heat genius troubleshooting guide on their website before contacting
them or Philip James. The most common issues you may face are low batteries, replacements are supplied attached
to your boiler which you can easily replace yourself, please note replacements on the provided sheet.
