Addictions
1. Smoking
As you probably know, smoking is bad for your health. It can cause cancer, and heart disease.
People who smoke live a shorter life, by almost 10 years. It is also quite an expensive habit.
So how come people still keep on smoking?
The answer, in a word, is addiction. An addiction is a habit that you cannot break free from.
The reasons are both physiological and psychological.
In the case of smoking, the addictive substance is called nicotine, which is highly addictive. A
smoker feels that he/she cannot live without nicotine, both in body and mind.
Drinking
Alcohol is viewed by some cultures as therapeutic and good for your body. The problem with
alcohol however is quantity. Almost anything that you use in large quantities regularly can
become a problem.
So alcohol unfortunately is often addictive. It changes the way your mind and your body
work: you become confused, cannot walk straight etc. It also presents a high risk for your
health. So, the more you drink, the more damage is done to your liver and brain cells.
Caffeine
Although it is considered by many today as essential to their daily routine, coffee can also be
dangerous. When it is consumed in large quantities everyday, the active substance in coffee,
called caffeine, can lead to heart disease and nervous exhaustion.
A safe alternative for people who want to reduce their caffeine intake it decaffeinated coffee.
It is still coffee, but without the potential to become additive and cause health problems.
Drugs
Cannabis
Cannabis (also called marijuana) is a plant originating in India, which is used as a recreational
psychoactive drug. It is also used in some spiritual and religious rituals. The cigarette rolled
using cannabis is called a joint.
Cannabis is considered a lighter drug, as people are generally capable of carrying out normal
actions and activities while high. Yet effects vary from person to person.
Negative effects: nausea, coughing, asthma, upper respiratory problems, difficulty with short
term memory, panic attacks etc.
LSD
LSD became famous in the 60s with the hippie movement. With its intense psychoactive
effects, it was promoted as a means to reach your inner self and have new spiritual
experiences.
LSD is mainly administered in its liquid form, by intramuscular or intravenous injection. Its
effects are very strong and can lead to permanent neuronal damage, such as psychosis.
Negative effects: anxiety, tension, increased perspiration, paranoia, fear, panic etc.
Amphetamines
Amphetamines are pills that affect the central nervous system. They are sometimes used in
medicine to treat depression, but only under strict medical supervision.
Amphetamines make you feel as if you have superhuman powers, and this can make you do
things that you wouldnt normally do, such as: running a great distance, jumping from a high
place etc. Increased doses intensify the effects and can put your life at risk.
Negative effects: aggressiveness, paranoia, dry mouth, blurred vision, acne etc.
