Course Purpose
Through this course, you will grow your creativity and capability in your art making.
You will apply and engage with various studio processes, mediums, and artistic
research. With a focus on practical methods, you will determine what holds real
meaning for you and develop your own artistic voice. This course is your opportunity
to cultivate a strong sense of self through reflection, exploration and communication
with the art mediums that you connect with.

Art 20 includes activities in drawing, painting, design, ceramics, sculpture, art history
and study of the contemporary art community. Youll also be encouraged to use non-
traditional approaches, such as metamorphosis or accidental occurrences, as the basis
for certain compositions.

This course provides a forum for safe expression, communication, exploration and
imagination, as well as the opportunity to enhance cultural, historical, and
contemporary understandings.

Course Activities and Assignments

Students in Art 20 will have the opportunity for increased self-direction and choice of
mediums in many of their activities and assignments. Opportunities to work in pencil,
charcoal, pastels, paint, collage, clay and mixed media will be available. Students will
be required to produce 3 critique quality drawings, 5 studio pieces of their own choice
and will be required to participate in several art related events, gallery visits, exhibits,
artist talks, critiques and research presentations.

Drawing - choose 3 out of 5 drawing assignments to work on throughout the semester

Clay and Ceramics mask/self-portrait metaphor, tiles, small plates, functional pots

Graffiti, Urban Art and Public Art - proposal project Art Beyond the Gallery, set
design and painting for Urban Dance Performance

Painting oil painting skills and one studio assignment in your choice of paint medium

Research - of artists and historical movements, mini research project, contemporary

Students will DRAW

Art 20 Scope and Sequence


Students will work towards the following:

draw for confidence and consolidation of head-to-hand skills

develop and refine drawing skills and styles

explore a personal selection of expressions

use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to interpret and evaluate both
their own work and the work of others

use non-traditional approaches to create compositions in both two and three


dimensions

solve teacher and student developed problems by varying the dominance of


design elements for specific visual effects

use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to interpret and evaluate both
their own works and the works of others

demonstrate various control over components of compositions

recognize that while the sources of images are universal, the formation of an
image is influenced by the artists choice of medium, the time and the culture

investigate the impact of technology on intentions and productions of an artist

acquire a repertoire of visual skills useful for the comprehension of different art
forms
Evaluation

The work completed in this course will belong in one of two categories:

Process Work includes practise exercises, sketchbook assignments, research


assignments, participation in class activities and mini critiques, statements of intention,
proposals, artist trading cards and identity postcards. Assignments in this category are
meant to build and grow the practise, planning, research and exploration skills that are
necessary in any art making process. This work will be weighted at 40% of the final
mark.

Formal Compositions includes the 5 studio assignments, 3 drawing assignments and


their accompanying critiques and artist statements. This work will be graded on the
rubric included with each assignment. This work will be weighted at 60% of the final
mark.

Expectations

Please be in class on time, ready to work, with all required materials. Always bring
your sketchbook, pencils, etc.

Attendance is extremely important. Class time will be used to work on assignments.


Lecture material, peer reviews and discussions will inform and enhance your art skills -
be here on time to maximize your learning. Chinook Attendance Policy will be
enforced.

All assignments must be completed on the due date. Please ensure that all components
are completed on the due, particularly if we are critiquing the work. The critique dates
for all assignments are listed on the assignment timeline and will be discussed at length
during classes. Late assignments will only be accepted if it has been specifically
discussed with your instructor.

Electronics and phones are not permitted in the art room. Please keep them in your bag
or locker. Occasionally, electronics use may be permitted as it relates to assignments
and research work. You instructor will let you know if this is the case. Texting and
email are specifically not permitted.

The Art Room, like the entire school, is a place of inclusion and respect. It is expected
that you will bring an attitude of peace, co-operation and maturity to this space.
