Internship Proposal
PT Asahimas Chemical

1. Background
Asahimas Chemical (ASC) is a company which produces a range of basic
chemicals for many downstream industries. ASC's integrated Chlor Alkali-Vinyl
Chloride plants is located in Cilegon, Banten, Indonesia. In 1986, ASC was
established as a multinational company with its headquarters in Jakarta. In 1989,
started operation as its state-of-the-art production complex in Banten province. Over
the years, the complex has expanded several times, substantially increasing
production capacity. Total investment now stands at USD 545 million. Today, ASC
operates the largest chlor alkali-vinyl chloride plant in Southeast Asia. By focusing
on chemical and industrial markets, ASC has the capacity to produce Caustic Soda
(NaOH), Ethylene Dichloride (EDC), Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM), Polyvinyl
Chloride (PVC), Hydrochloric Acid (HCI) and Sodium Hypochlorite (NaCIO). ASC
has three plants built on 91 hectares in Cilegon, Banten in Indonesia. Operated by
distributed control system, these plants are not only highly efficient but also with high
quality standards, commited to minimize the operation cost as well as carbon
emissions, constantly develops and seek for improvements by using the latest
technology.
In the first process, which consists of three trains, Caustic Soda is produced.
The derivative products include: Chlorine Gas, Hydrogen, Hydrochloric Acid solution
and Sodium Hypochlorite solution. The second process produces Vinyl Chloride
Monomer as a raw material for production of PVC. This plant consists of two trains.
Chlorine Gas, which is generated in the Chlor Alkali plant, reacts with Ethylene to
produce Ethylene Dichloride; this is then cracked into VCM. The third process, made
up of three trains, produces Polyvinyl Chloride, and it is at this stage that VCM is
polymerized into PVC.
The development of increasingly advanced industrial world both in the field of
chemical industry and non-chemical industry should be followed by the development
on its supporting elements. One of the contributing factors that determine the
success of a very dominant industry is a factor of human resources (manpower).
The role of higher education is becoming increasingly important in order to prepare a
reliable workforce, ready to use with the demands of professionalism. However, in
reality there is a gap between knowledge obtained during lectures inside the
classroom, with the real situation in working environment. This is evidenced from the
fact that many fresh graduate students are not ready to work in the industry. This is
based on one thing: the lack of work experience gained during the lectures in class.
To anticipate this situation, Institut Teknologi Indonesia (ITI), as an educational
institution, facilitates students to understand directly the industrial world, by giving a
specific course, named Practical Work/Internship (with code TK-8013).Through the
practical work/internship, students are expected to know the real conditions in the

industrial world. Other expectation is that students can conduct an analysis of the
systems that run on industry in order to provide solutions that have positive impacts
for the industry. Internship is a step that could improve students' ability to adapt well
to the work environment in the future.

2. Objectives
For Students
o Improve the knowledge, abilities and skills to work as a provision of
chemical engineering graduates
o Develop and improve insights on matters within the scope of employment,
organizational structure, work discipline, work systems, environment and
safety
o Opportunity to conduct a comparative study between theory and
application, and experience working environment in the real industrial
world
o To gain knowledge about the real technical problems as well as the
solutions in the work environment;
o To establish a method to think systematically and constructively when the
industry faced problems in the work environment
o Implement the knowledge that has been obtained during the lectures (7
semesters) at Institut Teknologi Indonesia;
o Deeper understanding on the application of chemical engineering in the
industry, especially those used in PT Asahimas Chemical.
o Completing Practical Work/Internship course (course code TK-8013)

For Company
o Opportunity to evaluate college systems in Indonesia from the students
who do the job training
o To get some input data from analysis done by job training participants
o Knowing the method or technology that can be obtained to resolve the
problems that exist in the company
o Having better chance to see the opportunities that can be developed in the
field of chemical engineering
o Having data from prospective qualified students as reference of
candidates recruitment for employment in the future

For Educational Institution

o Facilitate students to recognize the real industrial world to produce more
competent graduates

PT Asahimas Chemical

o Opportunity to evaluate teaching methods and curriculum based on the

results / reports of the students internship
o Having some references to deeply understand the needs and prospects of
industrial activities
o Deepening and strengthening the relationship between Institut Teknologi
Indonesia and PT Asahimas Chemical.

3. Implementation
a. Format
Introduction and Literature Study
At this stage, students will adapt to the work environment and study the
problem given by PT Asahimas Chemical.
Field Orientation
The company introducing the production process, system equipment,
utilities, waste management, and plant management to the students.
Observation, Research, and Analysis
At this stage, the company has full authority in the students learning
process. The mentor from the company will provide a case or problem to
the students. Furthermore, the students will try to provide a solution. The
given solutions are the results of observation and analysis through certain
methodology.
Final Report
The final report regarding the internship result will be presented to the
mentor from the company and the supervisor from the Department of
Chemical Engineering - ITI.

b. Timeline
According to Institut Teknologi Indonesias academic calendar for
2015/2016 academic year, this internship will be conducted from February 1st
to March 11th 2016.
We hope that PT Asahimas Chemical may consider this internship
proposal. The activities plan which will be implemented for the internship is
