( to be submitted in my room)

1. A liquid mixture containing 45.0% benzene (B) and 55.0% toluene (T) by mass is fed to a
distillation column. A product stream leaving the top of the column (the overhead product )
contains 95.0 mole% B, and a bottom product stream contains 8.0% of the benzene fed to
the column (meaning that 92% of the benzene leaves with the overhead product). The
volumetric flow rate of the feed stream is 2000 L/h and the specific gravity of the feed
mixture is 0.872. Determine the mass flow rate of the overhead product stream and the
mass flow rate and composition (mass fractions) of the bottom product stream.

2. In the Deacon process of manufacturing chlorine, hydrochloric acid gas is oxidized with
air.The reaction taking place is ;
4HCl+ O2 2Cl2+2H2O
If the air used is 30% in excess of the theoretical
requirement, and if the oxidation is 80% complete, calculate the composition by volume of
dry gases leaving the reactor.

3. A mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen is sent to a catalytic reactor. The reactions
taking place are:
CO2 + 4H2 CH4 + 2H2O
CO2 + H2 CO + H2O
The mole % of the gases ( on a water-free basis) leaving the reactor are:
CO2=57.1%, H2=41.1%, CH4=1.68% and CO=0.12%.
Find
(a) The conversion of CO2.
(b) The yield of CH4 based on CO2 reacted.
(c) The mole % of CO2 and H2 in the feed.

4. The reactions C2H6 C2H4 +H2

C2H6 +H2 2CH4
take place in a continuous reactor at steady state. The feed contains 85.0 mole% ethane
and the balance inerts (I). The fractional conversion of ethane is 0.7, and the molar yield of
ethylene based on ethane reacted is 0.47. Calculate the molar composition of the product
gas and the selectivity of ethylene to methane production.
