Welcome
On behalf of AOCMF (the craniomaxillofacial clinical division of the AO Foundation), it is my pleasure to personally
welcome you to this course. Each year, AOCMF provides over 110 educational opportunities to more than 5,000
passionate surgeons worldwide.

The mission of AOCMF is excellence in facial surgery across the specialties. We encourage the involvement of all
interested professions, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, oculoplastic surgery, and
neurosurgery. To achieve our mission, we are committed to remaining at the forefront of education and new
developments, by offering remarkable learning and networking experiences focusing on craniomaxillofacial trauma
and reconstruction.

Through our courses, membership program, and our website, our goal is to encourage and inspire surgeons
including residents, fellows, and practitionersto pursue fulfilling careers in our field. In addition, we endeavor to
provide lifelong learning opportunities and career development options for more experienced specialists in the most
appropriate and useful ways as their needs evolve.

Goal of the course

This course aims to enable the participant to involve at advanced surgical management of TMJ patients.

Target participants
This course is aimed at fully qualified medical specialists in advanced surgical management of TMJ patients
in (with at least 3 years of experience).

Course objectives
After the course, participants should be able to:
Examine TMJ patients effectively
Indicate appropriate diagnostics
Select patients for surgery
Select specific surgical procedures
Use surgical skills in daily practice

Course description
The topics of the course will be discussed during two days and taught in three main ways. Comprehensive
lectures on the first day will concentrate on the understanding of the core material. On the second day,
hands-on training on Thiel- fixated human specimens will cover specific surgery techniques. At the beginning
of each surgical section, a short lecture and a demonstration by an instructor will be given. In order to link the
lecture material and practical skills taught with the problems encountered in d aily practice, participants will
have an opportunity for discussion with the instructors and the audience after each hands -on exercise
section.

AO funding sources
Unrestricted educational grants from different sources are collected and pooled together centrally by the AO
Foundation. All events are planned and scheduled by local and regional AO surgeon groups based on local needs
assessments. We rely on industrial/commercial partners for in-kind support to run simulations/skills training if
educationally needed.

1) Academic independence

Development of all curricula, design of scientific event programs, and selection of faculty are the sole responsibilities of
volunteer surgeons from the AO network. All education is planned based on needs assessment data, designed and evaluated
using concepts and evidence from the most current medical education research, and involving the expertise of the AO
Education Institute (www.aofoundation.org).

Industry participation is not allowed during the entire curriculum development and planning process to ensure academic
independence and to keep content free from bias.

Case simulations are chosen as an educational method to educate skills, we only use technology approved by the AOTK
