 RECEPTION WONDERLAND TRIP
Reception children attended Telford Wonderland as part of a hook for their NICER
Challenge Pack A Magical World. There was lots to see and do during the visit
and everyone had a fabulous time. Seanna Hassan from RCH, Saffron Sheridan
from RU and Makeiah Gayle from RTH have shared with us aspects of their day.
Q1. Please explain fully why you visited Wonderland in Telford?
A1. We had been really good and we were told we could have some
fun there Makeiah.
Our parents had letters from school, telling
us all about the visit Seanna.
Q2. How did the trip fit in with your NICER Challenge?
A2. It was to see a magical world with fairies All.
Q3. What did you see there? Give us a few examples.
A3. We saw a giant witch and a magical well Saffron.
We also saw lots of nursery rhyme and story book houses and
animals Seanna.
I saw Snow White, Seven Dwarfs and a scary witch Makeiah.
JUNGLE BUGS 100% ATTENDANCE TRIP
For the past few years, children who have attended school from the start
of the academic year in September to the summer term, are treated to
taking part in a 100% attenders trip to Jungle Bugs Indoor Play Centre
in Blackheath. Jay Riar from 5J and Imani Dawkins from 4F were
able to attend this year and told us a little bit about their day.
Q1. Why did you attend the Jungle Bugs trip?
A1. We both attended school, every day from
September. This gave us 100% attendance.
Q2. How did you feel when you were told that you were going?
A2. Elated and excited are the feelings which we experienced.

Q4. What is your favourite memory of the day? Why?
A4. The tour guide was really funny. He did lots of funny things to
make us laugh including funny mimes! Makeiah.
I remember seeing the enormous giant and the rides were fun!

Q5. How did you feel while you were walking around Wonderland? Give reasons
for your answer.
A5. I was excited to see the dinosaurs as they looked real! Makeiah.
I felt really happy when I was on the different rides! Saffron.

Q6. Was there anything that you didnt get to do, that you would have liked to do?
A6. We wanted to go through the maze Makeiah and Saffron.
I would have liked to go on all of the rides there Seanna.
Q7. Would you recommend this trip to others? Please give reasons for your answer.
A7. Yes! All
Because it was a really good day out Makeiah.
Because I would like to see if anyone could climb up to the top of the

Q8. How could you describe the trip in just 3 words? Please explain why you have
used those words.

Q3. What did you do while you were there? Explain fully.
A3. I played basketball, football and dodgeball - Jay.

Q4. What advice would you give to other children about their attendance?
A4. If you come every day it certainly pays off. We
felt special because not everyone got to go on the trip
but we did because we got 100% attendance.
Q5. How important is it to make sure you are in school every day and that you
are on time?
A5. Very important! When you do not attend,
you miss out on your learning.
Q6. What was your favourite part of the day?
A6. Playing with friends and enjoying ourselves!
Q7. Would you recommend Jungle Bugs to your friends? Give a reason for your

A7. Yes, because its a fun place to go to enjoy
yourself and they also provide delicious food.

AT THE NEC BIRMINGHAM
Children from Year 3 were treated to a
wonderful day at the NEC in Birmingham.

following the lives of dinosaurs from
their beginning to their eventual decline.

from 3A have told us some more about their day, which was spent in the presence
of dinosaurs a truly wonderful, real, immersive and purposeful experience!
Q4. Was the bus ride long? If so, how did you occupy yourself or keep busy on
the journey?
A4. It was quite long, but we entertained ourselves
by talking to each other and playing games.
Q5. What facts did you find interesting from your visit?
A5. 10 species of dinosaur were represented in the arena.
The largest dinosaur we saw was the Brachiousaurus. It
was 36 feet tall and 56 feet long from nose to tail.

A1. We made slime in a science lab and we tested solids,
liquids and gas. We also programmed robots!

A2. Our favourite part of the day was when we were able to explore

YEAR 5 VISIT TO WARWICK CASTLE

Year 5 visited Warwick
Castle as part of their
NICER Challenge Pack

insight to their day.
Q1. Why did you visit Warwick Castle?
A1. We went to Warwick Castle because our new Challenge Pack was
called Castle Attack Gaganpreet.
We were given the opportunity to practically
learn more about castles Nawal.
Q2. Did you enjoy the trip? Give your reasons for your answer.
A2. I enjoyed the trip because there were loads of interesting things
to see and do, especially going into the Haunted Room! Gaganpreet.
Yes, because I learned lots of new facts and lots of interesting
things about castles from just searching on the internet Nawal.
Q3. What did you see and do while you were there?
A3. We saw a huge castle and a bird of prey show, where the eagles
performed tricks Gaganpreet.
We also saw an archery show and there were lots of
mannequins and artefacts inside the castle Nawal.
Q4. How did the visit link to your Nicer Challenge?
A4. For our challenge we needed more information on acting out a
castle attack Gaganpreet.
We needed lots of fresh ideas to add to our dramatization Nawal.
Q5. Did you get to go inside the castle and all the way to the top of the building?
A5. Yes we did, it was really enjoyable Gaganpreet.
The castle and surrounding area is so historic Nawal.
Q6. Describe how you felt while you walked around the castle and the reasons why
you felt like you did.
A6. I felt excited walking around, because it was a new experience
and I wanted to know what would happen next Nawal.
I was joyful while I was walking around the castle and
grounds, because we were explorers while we were
looking at all the parts of the castle Gaganpreet.
Q7. Did you learn anything from your visit, that you didnt already know,
if so what?
A7. I learned that if you belonged to the royal family, you could not
choose your own husband or wife, they would be chosen for you!

I learned that to prove you were a witch in those days, you had
to stand on a weighing machine and if you were heavier than
a piece of metal, you were cast out as a witch! Gaganpreet.
Q8. What was your favourite part of the whole day? Give reasons for your answer.
A8. I enjoyed looking at the mannequin house as it was kind of
creepy and it gave me ideas for the challenge Nawal.
My best bit was going to the haunted room in the castle,
because it felt eerie but good to be standing in it! Gaganpreet.

 YEAR 6 ISLAMIC EXPERIE
Recently, Year 6 went to visit the Islamic Exhibition Centre in Small Heath.
This linked in with our challenge about setting up our own exhibition and
showing it to others. After arriving, we went into the activity room and
received an explanation of what we would be doing throughout the day, we
also watched a DVD about Islam. When that had finished, we were put into
groups and off we went to various sections throughout the exhibition.
The first section was about Faith and History here we learned about
all of the prophets. There is said to be 124 000 prophets. Some of the
most famous Islamic prophets are Muhammad, Abraham and Jesus.
The second section was in connection with The Five Pillars. We had already looked
at this topic in school; to help with our own presentations. The Five Pillars are
Shahada the testimony of faith, Sala prayer - 5 times a day, Sawm fasting, Zakat
giving 2.5% of your earnings to charity and Hajj the pilgrimage to Mecca.
The third section was about Family Life here we learned about Islamic
marriages and about what is expected from Muslims living together as
a family and in communities. We looked at outfits which are worn by
Muslims. We heard that the husband is the head of the family who protects
and provides for the members of his family. The wife is the heart of the
family meaning she looks after and cares for everyone in the family.
The fourth section was all to do with Islam and Science. We found out some
very interesting facts: many words which were given to the Muslim community
are closely associated to English words and our numerical system is actually
Arabic numerals. These facts were presented to us while we were there.
The final section we visited was the Activity section, where we learned how to
write our names in Arabic and we had a go at a crossword and wordsearch.

After attending the Islamic Exhibition Experience in Small Heath, we
began to put our own exhibition together, ready to present to Year
3. We were put into small groups and we researched and prepared
presentations and activities for the children in Year 3 to take part in.
We gained lots of relevant information and facts from the Islamic Experience.
I remember learning that honey is a well-known healer and used for lots
of medicines, this was documented in the Holy Quran. While we were
there we learned how to write our names in Arabic. This gave us some
ideas to share with the other children in school at our own exhibition.
When the day came to present our work, I felt a little bit nervous and excited at the
same time. We were going to be mini teachers! At first, it seemed to go well and it
was good fun. After a short while though, it started to become really hard saying
the same things to different groups and trying to talk over other peoples noise. I
now know how a teacher feels. Although it was hard work, it was an amazing day!

Although I did not attend the visit to the Islamic Exhibition
Experience, I was able to take part in the exhibition which
we researched, planned and prepared to present to Year 3.
Our exhibition in Year 6 was a multi-faith presentation and
my group worked on aspects of Buddhism. I learnt a lot about
the religion while conducting my research for the exhibition.
On the day of our presentation, Year 3 joined us in the hall.
As they began to flood into the hall, a few children came to
our table to colour in the Buddhist drawings which we made
available. There were so many activities for both classes to
take part in. They then began to watch our presentation.
It was fun presenting to a different year group and I
would love to do it again as I enjoyed the experience
so much, as did my friends who worked with me.
It was definitely an amazing experience!

ENCE AND EXHIBITION
My recount begins as Year 6 travelled on their half-day visit to the Islamic
Exhibition Experience in Small Heath. We were introduced to the exhibition
by the lady in charge there. After a short DVD presentation, we made our way
to the first section called Faith & History. This section explained the 124,000
prophets of Allah (The God of Islam) and how they all carried one message
around the world: to believe in the one God that is Allah. We were also taught
the story of the prophet Muhammad and his journey from Makkah to Medina.
The next section was The Five Pillars and this area explained the five
pillars of Islam in detail: five main duties a Muslim has to carry out in
order to live a good life. These five duties are Shahadah (believing in
one God), Salah (praying five times a day), Zakat (donating 2.5% of
your wealth to charity), Sawm (fasting during the month of Ramadan)
and Hajj (travelling to Mecca at least once in your lifetime).
The third section was entitled Family Life. This section explained how
Muslims are instructed by their religion to treat their fellow humans in a kind,
caring and just manner. This section also explained the story of the first man
and woman to come to Earth according to Islam, Adam and Eve and how
Muslims should never smoke, take illegal drugs, drink alcohol or gamble;
particularly as the first three will all affect your body and are unhealthy
and it is pointed out that gambling is bad because instead of wasting your
money on games of chance you could use that money for your family.
After that, we went to the Islam & Science section. Here we were
given information on how Islam has made a massive mark in the
scientific world. For example, did you know the word algebra comes
from the Arabic word al-jabr which means completion?
Then we attended a few other exhibitions which didnt have a presenter.
We were able to look at artefacts and read lots of relative information
many of these sections were about Muslim Architecture and textiles.
Finally, we made our way to the final section of the day. This was called
the Activity section. We were shown how to write our names in Arabic
and we took part in a quiz. We also met an elder from the centre, who
answered lots of our questions. We were able to purchase a few items
from the mini shop and then sadly, it was time to leave the exhibition.
However, I had a great time looking at and listening to lots of interesting
and useful information. I was pleased when we returned to school safely!

 LIFE AFTER SATs CINEMA AND BOWLING
We all arrived at school ecstatically happy and ready for the day ahead of us. After
registration we all gathered our things together and made our way to be seated on
the coach. When we arrived at the cinema we purchased our snacks ready to watch
the movie Boss Baby. The film was incredibly funny and made us all laugh it
was a fabulous experience to be able to watch a great movie with my friends!
As soon as the movie had finished, we left the cinema and we all began
to talk about our favourite parts of the film. We then made our way to the
bowling arcade. Once we got there, we went straight to the arcade area
where we spent our money on different games. Lots of us won gaming
tickets where we could collect them to exchange for prizes. I had 83!
SATs were so stressful! All of the children in Year 6 felt the same Im
sure. I worked really hard and revised a lot at home before the tests.
I couldnt wait for them to be over, so that we could have a bit more
fun! I was really looking forward to our cinema and bowling trip.
When the day finally arrived, so many of us felt as if a boulder had been
lifted off our shoulders due to all the stress which had been lifted!
When we arrived at the cinema, it seemed to take forever to get our snacks

due to the fact that we had worked so hard throughout the year and during
SATs week. Once we arrived at the cinema, we purchased our snacks and
then after a short wait, made our way to the screen where we were going to
watch Boss Baby. It was quite a humorous film. The funniest part was when
the baby said Im on a mission from above, and the young boy answered,
Are you the baby Jesus! You kind of have to see and hear it in context, but
it was really funny at the time a film I would definitely recommend!
It was clear to see that we were all very nervous during SATs week. It had
finally arrived! We didnt think it was ever really going to happen! But it was
here! I had revised and practised my work reading and maths especially.
It was quite nerve-racking being split up into groups and following
strict instructions for the tests. I enjoyed the first day, even
though I was so nervous. Soon enough it was all over and SATs
were no more! We were so relieved that it was all over.
Shortly after SATs we were told about our reward trip of visiting the cinema and
The day began when we left school at promptly 9:15 am and arrived
at the Dudley Castlegate Cinema in just under an hour. The film we
went to watch was Boss Baby which, in my opinion, was okay but I
desperately wanted to watch Guardians of the Galaxy 2: the reason we
couldnt see this film was that it was advertised as a category 12A.
After the film had finished, we walked over to the arcade and bowling alley, which
was just opposite the cinema. First, we were able to try out lots of games and
activities in the arcade. Unfortunately, many of which were rather pricey and I even
had some of my money taken by the machines without letting me have my turn!

We were then asked to get into groups of five people ready to play bowling. I was
able to be on a lane with all of my friends. We all supported each other while we
were bowling as we wanted to get as many pins knocked over as possible. We ate
our hot food at the bowling lanes and then we quickly got back to the game.
Unfortunately, it was soon time for the very exciting day to come to an end.
We were all very exhausted from the fun day which we had experienced,
so the journey back to school on the coach was very quiet indeed!

before we could go in to see the film I guess we were too excited! The film
was really entertaining and very funny in parts. After the film ended we
made our way to the arcade. While we waited for the bowling to start, we
played some games and lots of people were winning tickets to exchange for
prizes. At last, our lanes were ready! We ate a hot lunch while we played
and before we knew it, it was time to make our way back to school. We
had a great day and this proved there definitely is Life after SATs.

Then, after the film had finished, we went tenpin bowling. We played in the
arcade for a while until it was time to bowl. Despite the fact that we had
fun, my teams bowling rank kept on breaking down so, we didnt get to
finish the game. After about the third time of it crashing, most of the team
had abandoned the rest of us and had gone back to the arcade again.
Even though there was a glitch with the bowling, it didnt spoil our
day. We had lots of fun and thoroughly enjoyed the trip!

cinema to see Boss Baby. It was full of emotion and exceptionally funny! After we
had watched the film and had been fully entertained, we made our way over to
the arcade to play some games before our bowling took place. Many of us won
lots of tickets which we could swap for prizes. Then it was time to begin our game
of bowling. It was AWESOME! Totally unbelievable. I thoroughly enjoyed my day
from beginning to end something which Ill remember for a long time to come!

After about forty-five minutes or so, we made our way to the bowling
lanes, where we separated ourselves into groups of five and each
group had our own matches. I came third in my group, but I was
fine with that as we all didnt have too greater scores!
Eventually, it was time to leave the bowling alley. Wed had a great day and not
many people can actually say that! I have to say that in the end I was relieved
as the whole day was a break from all the SATs work I think we deserved it!

TEACHER INTERVIEW
MR BATHAM
Mr Batham teaches in Year 4 presently. He joined VPA as a newly qualified teacher
three years ago. Previously to that, he helped out in Year 6 to get a flavour of
what teaching was all about. He trains with our football team and is definitely
passionate about the sport! Here we have a brief insight into Mr Bathams world.
Q1. What is your favourite colour and why?
A1. It has to be blue, as its the main colour of my
favourite football team West Bromwich Albion.
Q2. Who is your favourite singer/band? Give a reason for your choice.
A2. Coldplay are my favourite band. The bands music is
VERY relaxing so we often listen to it in the classroom
it helps us to work in a calm environment.
Q3. What is your favourite food? Give a reason for your choice.
A3. Definitely burgers from 5 Guys.
How unhealthy!
Yes, but they taste amazing plus they let you have any toppings you
want on them! The fries are delicious!

Q4. What do you do when youre not teaching?
A4. I play football at lot - three times a week! I play for
my own team once and coach my own team twice.
Q5. What has been your funniest moment while at VPA?
A5. Dressing up as Albus Dumbledore for
Videography Week - it was a really fun day!
Q6. What has been your best moment teaching at VPA?

A6. My best moment was last year as part of our Crazy
Contraptions NICER Challenge we built a racetrack in the
classroom and raced a BB-8 droid It was brilliant!

What made you apply for a job here?
A7. This is my third year of teaching. I volunteered
here for a while before starting my teacher training.
I thought there was a great atmosphere and I was
already enjoying working here, while helping out.
Q8. Where would you most like to visit for a holiday and why?
A8. I would love to go to Brazil the beaches look
amazing and the football culture looks so much fun! I
would love to play football on the beach in Brazil!

BEST, WORST & FUNNIEST MEMORIES
Best Moment I have had lots of great moments
while being at this school, but I would have to say
the very best was when I was awarded the position
of being a school councillor for the SECOND time!
Worst Moment While in Year 6, when receiving
my SATs results, I was slightly disappointed with my
Maths score as I expected to achieve 109. I opened
my envelope to see I had 107 instead this made me feel slightly disappointed.
On the positive side though, I had got one of the highest scores in my class :)
Funniest Moment My funniest moment was when one of my classmates
said, Sir, look at my work! immediately after that, our loud timer shouted
out BEAUTIFUL! which indicated that their work was BEAUTIFUL. You really
had to be there to appreciate it. We all erupted into fits of laughter!

The best moment for me at VPA, was when I was
chosen to be a part of the girls football team and we
played in a football tournament while I was in Year 6.
The worst moment was when I fell out with my
best friend or when we had a disagreement. I love
my best friend so this situation made me really sad!
My funniest moment was when my friend (Amelia) and I dubbed other
peoples conversations. Its very funny watching their lips moving and we have
to try and guess what they are going to say and say it instead of them!

My worst moment is when I was in reception
and my former teachers (Miss Tang and Miss
Hartland) were giving milk out to my friends and
when it finally came to me I had taken the milk
and asked Miss to put the straw in my carton,
when she was finished I took it from her and
then accidentally squeezed it and the milk spilled
all over my clothes and some landed on my friends. I was so embarrassed
and I felt like running away and curling up into a little ball to hide away.
My best moment is when I went bowling with my friends and we
all had a great time when we were bowling and watched a movie at
the cinema and played together and took selfies with each other and
it was an amazing experience to enjoy with my best friends.
My funniest moment is when I was camping with my friends and
we were all in our tents and one person sneezed and everyone started
saying bless you. We all started laughing when we got told off!

I remember my worst moment being
the day of the auditions for the Year 6
Leavers Production. I desperately wanted
to be the character Nancy, however I got the
part of Beth (Nancys best friend) instead
My best moment was right back
when I started life at VPA. I was in
the assembly line and Tyra asked me to be her friend!

While I have been at Victoria Park, there have
been many moments to remember. One of
the best memories I have is attending
an after school club in Year 6. Whilst I was
playing football with an outside coach, I was
thrilled to score a hat trick (3 goals)!
I recall my funniest moment was when I went camping in Year
5. It was late and all of a sudden someone sneezed and then another
person said, Bless you! and pretty much immediately, all you could
hear was Bless you! Bless you! Bless you! It all went quiet again
and everything had calmed down when people were going off to Mr
Englishs tent to tell him that they needed things it was so funny!

Year 6. When I auditioned for the role of Bill Sykes, just as I was
getting into the character, my voice cracked and sounded silly.
