Name of Plant:
Tullip

Scientific Name:
Tulipa gesneriana

Botanical Description:

The tulip, Tulipa gesneriana, is the most popular

of the spring-flowering bulbs. It also offers the
greatest variety in color, shape, and form of any
bulb. Although tulips are associated with Holland,
they actually are not native there; tulips descend
mostly from species originating in the Middle
East.

Growth Habit. Each plant can vary in height

ranging from 10cm to 71cm depending on the
species. The tulip plant is native to Africa, Asia,
and Europe. Belonging to the Tulipa genus and
Lilaceae family, the tulip is a perennial plant
having a short stem and bulbous base. Tulips
bloom from early spring through summer. The life of tulips is longer when planted in warmer
climates.

Plant. The tulip plant is a medium plant (10 71 cm) in height. The stem of small tulip
may be leafless, or have one to two leaves. Attached to the stolon, or stem of the tulip, is the
bulbous base, which also may or may not have thin, dry hairs attached.

Foliage. Tulips have 2 to 6 leaves (although less common varieties can have 12) which are
long, thin and green. Larger tulips may have two, or more leaves. Leaves vary from light to
middle green in color and have a glossy finish.

Root. The bulbs are usually planted in the autumn at a depth of four to eight inches below
the surface in a soil enriched with compost.

Flower. Most tulip plants generate one flower per stem. A few varieties have up to four
flowers per stem. The three petals and the underlying three sepals are called tepals.
The colors of the tulip flowers vary from a wide range of colors available including, white, red,
yellow, orange, lilac or blue violet, and pink.
