MUSIC FOR NINE MICROPHONES
Begin with nine performers on stage, standing on a hard surface (plywood, or something
similar). In front of them are nine microphones, all live and amplied, on long cords.

Performer 1 picks up the rst microphone, then lifts it to shoulder height, extends her
arm with palm down, then drops the microphone banging to the oor. She immediately
picks it back up again. Performer 2 also picks up a microphone.

Then both Performer 1 and 2 perform the mic drop together, at the same time. They
both pick them up again.

Repeat this action adding Performer 3, 4, 5 etc with each repetition, until all 9
performers are dropping their microphones at once in a steady rhythm. Repeat several
times.

While performers 2 to 9 are all still dropping in unison, Performer 1 goes out of tempo
and starts dropping her microphone more quickly, picking it up as soon as it drops, and
re-dropping as quickly as she can.

Performer 2 follows, picking her own tempo, while Performers 3 to 9 continue going in
time. Performer 3 follows, and so on until all 9 performers are going at their own speed,
in chaos. Allow the chaotic dropping to continue for approximately 30 seconds.

With all 9 performers still dropping chaotically, Performer 1 starts throwing the
microphone aggressively to the oor instead of dropping it from shoulder height.
Performer 2 follows; instead of merely dropping the mic using gravity, it is thrown at
the oor violently. As before, Performer 3 joins, then 4, 5, etc. until all 9 performers are
throwing their microphones violently at the oor.

The performance continues with performers getting more and more aggressive, doing
whatever it takes to destroy their microphone smashing it to bits. Once a performers
microphone is destroyed, they may leave the stage.

If the microphones are particularly durable, performers may resort to using any
materials on hand in the performance space to destroy the microphones, including feet,
furniture, music stands, pieces of the stage, other instruments, tools, etc. The piece is
nished when all 9 microphones are destroyed, and all 9 performers have exited.
