General Aptitude Syllabus for GATE 2017

The GATE paper comprises of two sections - General Aptitude and Core Subject. The
General Aptitude section is common for all GATE papers. It can prove to be
the most scoring 15 marks of your GATE 2017 paper, if you just put in a little

Why General Aptitude is Important


These questions are easy to solve and scoring, if you prepare for them well. There is
no sectional cut off. This means that a single GA question that you answer correctly is
just as good as a Core question you get right. On your scorecard, it doesn't matter
which section your marks came from. The difference is that you might be able to
solve a GA question in a matter of seconds, whereas a Core question might take you
up to several minutes. Even a single correct answer can push you up several hundred
ranks. A mammoth 9.5 lakh candidates appeared for GATE 2016. This means that
the competition is only going to get tougher this year. So General Aptitude serves as a
make-or-break section for students appearing for the GATE exam.

The GATE Exam is divided into two portions: Verbal Ability and Numerical
Ability. Verbal ability questions can be answered quickly compared to the numerical
ability questions. Numerical Ability questions are easier than verbal but may
consume time if you do not apply short-cuts in computations. Most questions in the

General Aptitude section will be MCQ type, but you can expect one or two Numerical
type questions as well. The breakup of the questions asked in the two topics are given
below.

The ordinary form of mercury thermometer is used for temperature ranging from

alcohol are used. These are, however, not satisfactory for use in high temperatures.
When a mercury thermometer is used for temperature above 500o F, the space above
the mercury is filled with some inert gas, usually nitrogen or carbon dioxide, placed
in the thermometer under pressure. As the mercury rises, the gas pressures is
increased, so that it is possible to use these thermometers for
temperatures as high as 1000o F.
