Supports
Our classroom will be filled with
respect and kindness for all,
polite language, and patience with
others. The children will be
encouraged to develop self-control
and a good work ethic. Effort and
appropriate behavior will be
rewarded with positive praise to
encourage children to make
appropriate behavior choices.

All students at Highland Drive participate in Positive

Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS), our school-
wide approach for supporting positive behavior for all
students. Behaviors are recorded on monthly individual
PBIS calendars, which are kept in the childrens red
home folders. Children who earn a clean calendar are
rewarded with a school-wide celebration at the end of
each month. The rules are listed on the calendar;
please help your child by reinforcing appropriate
behavior expectations at home as well.

Class Times, Attendance, Dismissal

Please contact our building office at 440.740.4300 by
9am if your child will be absent. If you plan to pick
your child up at the end of the school day, please send
a note with your child stating this. All children must
be signed out in the office prior to their
release from the classroom. Our school day
hours are 9:25am -3:40pm.

Junior Teacher
Our Junior Teacher has many jobs: teacher-helper,
office mail, leading the class in the calendar, day
count, Phonics Dance, and of course leading the class
to and from specials. (S)he has a variety of privileges
as well! Hopefully one of your childs favorite
privileges as the Junior Teacher will be the
opportunity to share something from home on his/her
scheduled Junior Teacher day. The Junior Teacher
schedule goes in alphabetical order of student first
names; your child will know when his/her Junior Teacher
day is approaching.

Featured Firstie
Every week, one student will be selected to be the
classroom Featured Firstie. Information about this
special week will be sent home the week
before your child is scheduled to be our
Featured Firstie.

Field Trip
Our room parent will help coordinate parent volunteers
for our spring field trip. Details about the field
trip will be shared with you as soon as the information
is available.
Homework
Homework will be given Monday through Thursday. The
weekly newsletter will list all assignments.

School Lunch
The lunch menu is available on the district website.
You can find it under the heading Parents & Students.
You may pay online or send lunch money to school with
your child in his/her red home folder. Please mark the
envelope lunch money and include your childs first
and last name along with the payment.

Snacks
We have snack-time every day. Please provide a healthy
snack, and water bottle for your child. Also, please
keep in mind our classrooms are not air-conditioned
and the children need frequent water breaks.

Allergies
I have not been notified of student allergies yet. I
will update you with this information ASAP. Please do
not send snacks with any nuts, peanut butter, etc.
until further information is given on class allergies.

Birthdays
Your child may bring a treat to share with his/her
classmates. You may send the treat to school with your
child, drop it off at the office or bring the treat to
the classroom. At this time, we have 19 students. I
will provide allergy information for your consideration
in the very near future.

Class Celebrations
Our room parent(s) will coordinate four class parties.
Your support and contributions are greatly appreciated!
Detailed information about all gatherings will be
shared with you closer to the scheduled events:
1. Halloween Tues,, Oct. 31st Parade & Party!
2. Holiday Mon,, Dec. 18th
3. Valentines Day Wed,, Feb. 14th
4. End-of-Year Thurs,, May 31st
Talk about your childs school day. Avoid the
question What did you do in school today?
because we all know the answer to that question
is nothing! Instead, have your child tell you
about a specific subject (phonics, reading
workshop, writing workshop, centers, math,
science, health, social studies, media, art,
phys. ed. and music.) Ask about our Hunks and
Chunks and have your child chant a few rhymes!
Have your child tell you about the Junior
Teacher; what did (s)he bring from home to share?

Check the red Home Folder daily.

Read the weekly newsletter at the beginning of

the week.

Read to, with or listen to your child as (s)he

reads aloud daily.

Talk about books with your child. Ask what

(s)hes reading in school.

Have a designated homework space and have all the

necessary supplies available, including pencils,
erasers and markers.

Keep reading and writing materials available for

your child.

Set a specific homework time and if your family

schedule permits, allow for a break time between
school and homework.
Contact me as soon as a concern or question
arises.

Provide your child with lots of praise and

encouragement! o
