worship the Elephant-Faced God
- Ganesha, Ganapathi or Vinayaka, the
innate feelings for anyone will always
be the same; because HE is the lord of
success and wisdom. It is believed that
HE can remove all the obstacles that come up in the way
of our multifarious efforts and endeavours. The elephant
head and the potbelly have become his identity for all the
worshippers. He is the son of Lord Shiva and goddess
Parvati and one of the most popular and important deities
among Hindus. Lord Ganesha represents the high-spirited
knowledge. As the one among the five prime deities of
Hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga, he is even
believed to be worshipped by the other four.
A 13th-century statue of Ganesha,Mysore District, Karnataka
of any importance could be initiated without invoking
and worshipping Lord Ganesha. It is believed that ever
since a boon was bestowed upon him, by Lord Shiva
himself, that before the commencement of any Pooja, by
anyone whomsoever, one must invoke and pray to Lord
Ganesha and seek his blessings; Lord Ganesha is being
worshipped right at the beginning of any endeavour with
devotion and dedication. Praying to Him to remove all the
obstacles that may throng the path and take one onto the
path of prosperity and success; can be always a morale
booster. Furthermore, He can also grace the devotees with
knowledge, spiritual success and power. Religious experts
and historians hold that that Lord Ganesha is worshipped
by all from all parts of the country, by devout Hindus,
irrespective of caste or creed.
The most famous and popular mantras to invoke him are
Om Shri Ganeshaaya Namah| and
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah|
Astrologically, Wednesday is held by some, as the best
day for worshipping Lord Ganesha. Wednesday is the
day ruled by Mercury or Budha. Those having a weak
Mercury in their nativity must worship Lord Ganesha,
on Wednesdays to gain fruitful results, luck and fortune.
Lord Ganesha is known for his love for modakas.
Therefore offering modakas to him is considered an
essential part of the worship. One can also offer fruits

and other sweets. White and red flowers, leaves of mango
tree, etc are offered to Him. However, tulsi is a taboo for
Ganesha worship.
Ganesha Chaturthi, that typically falls in late August or
early September every year (Magha Sukla Chaturthi) is
celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm throughout India and
also in many other foreign countries where Hindus live
and is considered to be the most auspicious day to worship
Lord Ganesha. Worshipping clay idols of Ganesha, the
festival culminates on the day ofAnantha Chaturdasi,
when the idols (Murthis) of Ganesha are immersed in the
rivers, seas, or in a most convenient body of water. Some
families have a tradition of the immersion on the 2nd, 3rd,
5th, or 7th day. In 1893, Lokamanya Tilaktransformed this
annual Ganesha festival from private family celebrations
into a grand public event. Because of the wide appeal
of Ganesha as "the God for Everyman", Tilak chose
him as a rallying point for Indian protest against British
rule. Tilak was the first to install large public images of
Ganesha inpavilions, and he established the practice of
submerging all the public images on the tenth day. Today,
Hindus across India celebrate this Ganesha festival with
great fervour, though it is most popular in the state of
Maharashtra. The festival also assumes huge proportions
inMumbai,and Pune; and in the surrounding belt of
Ashtavinayaka temples. The days when Chaturthi Tithi
falls and in both pakshas (lunar fortnights) are deemed
as special for worshipping Ganesha. The Chaturthi days
of the dark fortnights are observed as Vrata days Sankata
Hara Chaturthi by many who break the Vrata only after
witnessing the abhisheka at temples and observing the
rising Moon in the sky.
Let us worship Vinayaka - the one who has none else above
him to don a leadership mantle; to keep our efforts to be
carried on, without any major hurdles.

Kumbabhishekam
Kumbabhishekam, meaning consecration, is a temple
ritual that is designed to homogenize, synergize and unite
the mystic powers of the deity, enshrined in any particular
temple. This ritual has to be conducted normally at
reasonable intervals. It is a continuous cycle, which is done,
once every 12 years. This is done to restore the power of
the idol of the deity; that could have declined or depleted
due to the passage of time or due to the entry of some evil
forces in the temple, through some unknown sources or
through various inexplicable factors. By this purification
ritual the temple and its deity get surrounded by vibrant
positive energy that restores the power of the deity and
brings huge and strong positive influence for the deity and
the temple; afresh. In other words, Kumbabhishekam is
the process of performing the poojas on the idol-deity to
re-transform it into an all-powerful God; as it would have
existed in the past. Samprokshana is the nomenclature
used for such a ritual in the Vaishnavite shrines.
A temple and its deity usually are believed to redress the
genuine difficulties and grievances of the discerning and
deserving devotees. In this process of benevolence, the
inherent and infused spiritual powers of the installed in the
idol(s) of the temple get diminished over a period of time.
There can be various reasons for such a decline. They can
happen through the unintentional deficiencies - apacharas
- committed by the priest while conducting the pujas and
prayers. They can also happen, to the installed deities in the
sanctum sanctorum, because of the absolute demerits and
physical impurity of the performing priests; by the improper
pronunciation and recital of the prescribed mantras by
them; deficiency in the number or manner of repetitions of
the mantras or a host of other related reasons. Thus, the
omnipotence (sannidhya) of the installed idol representing
the deity can get progressively diminished. This state
may require and demand some rejuvenation or restoration
of the original and inherent powers of the deity; at any
appropriate time. Normally, it is assumed that the power
enshrined in the idol representing the deity gets mutilated
or decayed over a period of twelve years. It is then, that
a kumbabhishekam becomes necessary to be performed to
facilitate the deity to get back its lost chaitanya.
At times, the decline of the powers of the deity can occur
even before the prescribed period of twelve years, due
to various inexplicable reasons. On such situations, the
appropriate reasons for such a decline will be ascertained
through an astrological investigation called Devaprasna.

S aturn and Mars, the two malefics which are ill-

disposed to each other are going to stay in the Martian
sign of Scorpio for more than 6 months this year. This
raises interest about how this combination in transit is
going to affect individual horoscopes.
For instance the two most important personalities
of Tamilnadu politics, namely Ms. Jayalalithaa and
Mr. Karunanidhi have this combination transiting crucial
houses in their horoscopes at the time of Assembly
elections on May 16, 2016. Jayalalithaa is Gemini
ascendant and has Moon in Leo joined with Mars. For her,
Mars is the 6th lord and Saturn is the 8th lord (and also the
9th lord), now transiting the 6th house from the lagna and
4th house from the Moon sign. By general rules of transit
these two malefics in the 4th house must be bad.

Looking at Karunanidhis horoscope we will see that
this malefic combination occurs in the 7th house from the
Moon sign (Taurus) and in the 5th house from his lagna.
Both of them have this transit in adverse houses but things
stand out such that one of them will win the elections to
assume the office of the Chief Minister. So how is this
transit going to work?
It is here we have to keep in mind that mere conjunction
and transit of planets do not cause good or bad. It is a
combination of other factors too that determine the nature
of things to happen. The running dasa and bhukthi also
must support the adversity of these malefics.
Transits in Birth Charts
More than the transits, the prospects of kids that are born
in the current times with Saturn - Mars conjunction in
Scorpio is a matter of research. For instance the death
of the Indian techie working for Infosys in Brussels in a
terror attack during the period of this conjunction when his
child was just a month old is worthy of research. Though
the exact date of the birth of his child is not known, news
reports said that the child was 41 days old when his body
was brought to his house. The terror attack that killed him
took place on 22nd March 2016. His body was brought to
his home on 29th March. This was reported on 30thMarch
in the Times of India which said that his baby was 41 days
old. This puts the prospect of the baby being born on 18th
February 2016.

seen generally from the Moon sign, we start exploring the
prospects for the father of the child from this horoscope.

Aquarius is the 9th house from the Moon sign and Sun,
the signifcator for father is in the 9th house at 5+ degrees
which is Mrithyu bhaga for this sign. The significator in
the signifying sign and in Mrithyu Bhaga kills the father.
But why did this happen so early in the childs life? It is
here we can see the play of the conjunction of these two
malefics.
Taking the 9th house (Aquarius) as the lagna of father,
Saturn is the lagna lord and also the 12th lord. Mars is
the lord of the 3rd house that signifies longevity. For the
father, the lagna lord goes to the 10th house in an enemys
sign and gets joined with the 3rd lord Mars within hours
of birth (or probably after the entry of Mars as we are not
sure of the birth date and time). This conjunction happens
in the 6th house from Moon for which these planets signify
lords of malefic houses. They together aspect Taurus, the
4th house from the 9th house.
Please note the transit of the 4 house for these two

planets is bad. But here we see the aspect on the 4th house
for a particular factor (father) in the horoscope. This is
reinforced by the time of death of the father. The father
died at the terror attack that took place at 9-11 am Brussels
on March 22nd, 2016.

aspected by the 3rd aspect of Saturn and the 4th aspect of
Mars. Within hours Mars entered Scorpio and started the
4th aspect on Aquarius where Sun was joined with Ketu.
The 7th from the Aquarius was Leo which was aspected
by Saturn sided by Mars. Jupiter, also the significator
for father had joined Rahu in Leo which happens to the
maraka house for Aquarius (9H).
It must be noted that both Sun and Jupiter that signify
father were in Scorpio in the Navamsa chart at birth. When
Saturn and Mars moved into that position in transit and
Sun moved to the maraka house (2H) and Moon in the star
of Venus in Leo (conjunct with Jupiter and Rahu) receiving
the aspect of Saturn with Mars from the Martian sign, the
father of the child died of explosion.

So it is matter of crucial importance for births happening
during this conjunction. The aspect this conjunction on
Taurus and Leo and their lords Venus and Sun is capable
of ill-effects. By the general rule of transit, Saturn and
Mars in the 6th from the Moon are deemed good. But one
must look at the aspects that fall on different signs and
those signs as bhavas with their lords to see whether this
malefic conjunction could affect one or not.
Similar kind of malefic aspect is going to happen between
16th and 25thAugust 2016. On 16th August Sun enters Leo
and joins Venus, Rahu and Mercury. This combination
is going to be aspected by Saturn which will be in close
conjunction with Mars and Mars winning a planetary war
with Saturn. Moon in Capricorn will also be aspected by
Saturn at that time. But Jupiters aspect on Moon will help
reduce the damage.
Mercury leaves the combination on 19th August while
Venus will continue to be in Leo till 24 th August.
The importance to Venus
is because it is the lord
of Taurus which receives

The entire discourse here refers to births during this
period of transit. More than the position of the planets
or the bhava where they are posited, it is the aspect that
is cast by them is important. The dasa bhukti must be
supportive of such ill effects. For instance, in the case
of the baby discussed above, the early part of the day of
birth had martian star (Mrigasheersha) and from morning
onwards it was Aridra. In all probability the baby was born
in Aridra star, in Rahu dasa Sun bhukthi for this kind
of fate to happen.
It must be noted here that the aspect of Saturn and Mars at
the birth time has been probed by olden astrological texts.
For instance, Brihat Jataka says that if Leo is the lagna
occupied by the Sun and the Moon and aspected by Saturn
and Mars, the child will be blind (Ch 4-20).

and 5th from the Sun, the father will be imprisoned when
the child is born. (Ch 5-7). This has relevance when Sun
will be Cancer in July - August. At that time these two
malefics will be in the star of Saturn.

If Saturn is in Scorpio or Cancer, one of which is the birth
aspected by the Moon, the delivery takes place in a hole or
hollow or pit. (Ch 5-10). This is possible when Moon is
in Cancer or Scorpio or Capricorn or Taurus in the current
transit of Saturn.

If the Moon or the Sun is in the 9th or 5th from Saturn and
Mars, the child will be forsaken by the mother. (Ch 5-14).
If there is aspect by Jupiter the child will grow well.

Though these are general rules, the dasa bhukti lords
must be supportive of the results. Now taking back the
discussion to the beginning of this article, whom does
the dasa bhukthi favour, Jayalalithaa or Karunanidhi,
though they have inimical transit of Saturn and Mars?
Jayalalitha is running the dasa of karma lord and the
bhukthi of dharma lord. Karunanidhi is running the dasa
of badhaka lord and the bhukthi of Rahu which is in the
2nd house (Leo) in natal chart. I leave it to the readers to
deduce the winner.
The conjunction of Saturn and Mars particularly in Martian
(Aries and Scorpio) and Saturnine signs (Capricorn and
Aquarius) evoke interest and deep study. It is not just
due to the fact that they are bitter enemies. It is because
that Mars plays a deceptive game against Saturn! This
is based on the logic of how planets have their attributes
like people have and how enmity takes shape when people
of opposing, aggressive and cunning characteristics are
forced to co-exist.
The Clash of the Titans
Mars is known as an aggressive planet who wants to
dominate. Saturn also wants to dominate but due to its
limitations in mobility it indulges in cunningness. When
Mars comes to the house of Saturn (Capricorn), its
domination prevails and therefore it gets exalted. Saturn

is a mute house owner there. But when Saturn comes to
the Martian home of Aries, Mars does not reciprocate the
gesture and Saturn is left to be debilitated. So these two
houses, Capricorn and Aries are very important in judging
the results when Mars and Saturn stay there together.
The basic line of judgement is pure logic, in that the one
who is powerful of the two by their lordships (of the
bhavas / houses in the natal horoscope), pada where they
are positioned, distance between them (whether moving
towards or away from each other aided by retrogression)
and the houses they aspect together and individually
would prevail over the other whenever it is conducive. It
is like two elephants that are fighting for a territory. When
elephants fight it is the grass at their feet that suffers.
Similarly when these two planets fight, the bhava where
they are positioned suffers. The missiles they fling, cause
suffering to the bhavas that receive their aspects.
This goes to show that there can be no black and white
statements made on the impact of this conjunction without
knowing the lordships and position of these planets in
Aquarius and Scorpio, the same logic prevails. Of these
two, in the case of Scorpio, Saturn will be angrier as it had
been debilitated in the other Martian sign. But what kind
of damage it can do cant be judged without knowing the
position of Saturn and Mars in the natal chart and the other
planets that would modify the effect of these two planets
by association or aspect in the natal chart.
Case Studies
Given here is the natal position of planets of a native
born in the year 1962 with Mars Saturn conjunction in
Capricorn. Mars is exalted and Saturn is strong as it is its
own house.
Mars is the 5th lord exalted
in the 2nd house of wealth.
Sun The 2nd lord Saturn is also

During this period of the rare transit, the planetary transits show a
peculiar transit as the four planets in the zodiac will be retrograde

W hile Saturn has been in Scorpio his

by prominent benefics, it 'is more likely to be productive of
evil than good. It jeopardises honour and reputation, may

subtle, one that will excel through plots and counterplots

Dr. W.J. Tucker in one of his articles published a few years
back has described sexual instinct as the basic instinct
of Scorpio, So far as the overt actions are concerned
the Scorpions are found to be sexy. In some cases when
Saturn occupies this sign the person is generally found
lacking in sexual competence. Women are likely to be
frigid while men sexually impotent. Persons with Saturn
in this house are often suffering from a complex. Sexual
union and sexual satisfactions are not merely physical
acts. They are the conscious acts of merging of two into
one. The person with Saturn suffers from a complex of
inadequacy and fear of rejection by his or her partner. It

It is difficult to quote instances of individual aspects
because human personality is most complicated and

his life and that purpose has to be in consonance with the
divine will. This is not to say that the human being lies at
the mercy of the almighty but only to affirm that he is the
reaper of the results of his karmas (deeds) of the earlier
life. He should either abide by them willingly or utilize the
power of his free will to change the circumstances which
is often not easy to do. A man can face the entire world but
not himself. If he does it consciously or unconsciously he
can and does make amends and better his life.
The great difficulty with Saturn is that he does not come
out with what he wants and feels. He remains incognito
and justifies his mistakes by blaming others.
Saturn in Aspect to Jupiter
Jupiter is the biggest planet of our solar system next only
to Sun. He is regarded as the most benefic planet. He is
an optimist. He always believes that life has a meaning.
It is beautiful and the man stands to draw the maximum
from it.There is a feeling with Jupiter that the good shall
ultimately be triumphant and bright rays of good luck
shall shine from the dark clouds of misery and misfortune.
Jupiter is a part of the concrete mind but he has no reason
or logic with him except his sound faith in the ultimate
goodness of things.
Jupiter relates to Sun in that it symbolises the creative and
visualizing power of Sun. He is like Sun a patriarch and
envisages a patriarchal society.
Saturn is just the other side of the coin of Sun. While Sun
stands for boldness Saturn represents the fear complex
of the psyche. Jupiter is also bold but the reason is quite
different. He has a basic outlook and philosophy of
ultimate nature of things. Saturn is guided by his tangible
efforts and tangible results and as a consequence he has
nothing to do with blind faith.
Saturn-Jupiter aspects or contacts thus symbolise the path
of concrete knowledge and intuition, perception and faith.
This is most difficult path to traverse. Saturn tries to place
hurdles. The demands of the flesh often weigh heavier than
all intuitive perception and faith. Sometimes Saturn also
begins to believe in faith and perception. There is thus a
see-saw type of situation and the individual gets confused.

Jupiter or Saturn, whoever aspects the other brings the
latter's contours in sharp focus and if the aspects happen
to be mutual the vulnerability of both comes into focus.
The contacts, traditionally, are associated with the financial
aspects of the native. So far as the materiality is concerned
there may be some reservations. The activity is more on
mental plane and tangible results are only the outcome of
that mental situation. The position is usually seen in trine
or sextile aspects of Jupiter to Saturn. Where Jupiter is
afflicted or aspected by Saturn the effects of the latter are
more pronounced. There are generally no financial gains.
As regards financial affluence bestowed by Jupiter there
are differences of opinion. Jupiter is painted as the
preceptor of gods and a great spiritualist. The spiritualist
preceptor hardly believes in material gains. More properly
speaking this quality should be assigned to Venus because
though a spiritualist and a preceptor Venus is yet a material
planet engaged in material pursuits.
Jupiter is a mental planet connected with the vibrations
of intuition and faculty of creative imagination. He has a
direct experience of the inner values of the world. Saturn
is also a mental planet connected with the demands of
practical living and practical thinking. The material
circumstances limit Saturn's flight. Jupiter however carries
on with them in his-intuitive faith that good will ultimately
come out one day. Jupiter-Saturn contacts or aspects really
indicate no catastrophe but an opportunity to integrate the
one with the other and work with a judicious mixture of
the two blends. They should be helped in bridging over
the gaps between gross materialism of Saturn and pure
spirituality of Jupiter. Both of them should learn from
each other. Jupiter's idealism and faith etc. shall remain
mere fantasies if they have no relevance to the tangible
and mundane experiences. Saturn should also learn that
practical experience is not the only valid way of arriving
at conclusions. There is need to evolve an integrated
culture of the mind. The moment it is done the aspects
of the two apparently opposite planets will raise new and
better harvest of relative success and fortune.
Saturn in Aspect to Rahu
Rahu is not a planet. Astronomically he is a node of the
Moon. In astrology Rahu is treated like a planet. No
signs have been allotted to him. According to Maharishi
Parasara he shares the lordship of Aquarius with Saturn
and is exalted in Taurus. From this account it is clear
that Rahu has some relationship with Moon, Saturn and
Venus. About the question of aspect some say that Rahu
not having any physical body, has no aspect. The others
however grant him the power of aspect and say that he
has trine and opposition aspects.

Rahu and Ketu are the two most sensitive points in the
chart of the native. The areas of sensitivity can be judged
from the houses of the chart they occupy. Rahu is similar
to Saturn in the sense that he is also the reservoir of bitter
experiences of the past. The difference between Rahu and
Saturn is that Rahu seeks to avenge him through actions
and not to retire into oblivion. He goes on making schemes
which are secret. Moon gives him emotionalism Venus
bestows on him a desire to get stability and mastery over

therefore becomes more malefic with the help of Saturn

or their influences depend upon the planets who are
conjoined with him, aspect him and who happen to be
his sign dispositors. Even the lord of the constellation

affected. The other significant point is that his signs of
rulership and exaltation are both fixed signs indicating
that he has his single pointed attention to achieve his
object or aim.
Rahu is an airy planet. He affects the native on mental
plane and achieves tangible results. He is secretive and

Saturn's contacts with Rahu should be judged in the back

Kumbabhishekam recharges the spiritual power of the

How the Temples are Constructed and

mathematically meticulous, precise and proportional;
built according to strict Kshetra Vastu principles. The
wonder is that they are scientifically spiritual. As Gurudev
Rabindranath Tagore observed: Here (in temples) the
language of stone surpasses the language of man.
The Hindu temples take their cue from the structure of the

the relationship between temple and human body thus:

N EECHA-BHANGA means cancellation of the bad

effects of a debilitated planet. Discussion on this
subject has been made in different treatises of general
astrology. Here in this article some principles on this
subject as equated in some sutras of the Jaimini Astrology
will be discussed and at the conclusion the same principles
considered.
At the outset (vide Jaimini Sutras Pp. 284) Sutra 14 of
Chapter III, pada I is quoted here, which says:
Tasmin uchcha neeche pitri labhayoh sree-mantah
This interpreted as "when the 1st and the 7th rasis are
associated with exalted and debilitated planets, the native
becomes fortunate." In the Notes on this Sutras (op. cit.
pp. 285) it is stated 'In this Sutra the author suggests that
when the 1st and the 7th have some planets, and one or
some of them are exalted or debilitated, even then the
native becomes fortunate. It is needless to question the
case when one of the houses contains an exalted and the
other a debilitated planet."
Now in accordance with the purport of this Sutra let us
consider some concrete examples.
(i) Suppose, there are neecha (debilitated) planets in both
the 1st and the 7th houses. For example, Saturn in Aries
and the Sun in Libra. Here, the bad effects of the neecha
position are eliminated, and benefic Yoga results. The
rationale behind this seems to be the that the Sun is in
debilitation in Libra which is also the house of exaltation
of Saturn, who is placed in the kendra (angle).
Similarly, the bad effects of debilitation of Saturn in Aries
are counteracted by the Ucchadipati (lord of the house
exaltation) of Aries, i.e., Sun being placed in the kendra.
Likewise the mutual debilitations of Jupiter and Mars are
cancelled when they are placed in Capricorn and Cancer
But, in the case of the Moon we are confronted with a
problem because, Scorpio the neecha place for the Moon
is not the sign of exaltation of any other planet.
From this we derive a rule for the Neecha Bhanga ;
(a) the bad effects of neecha planet is cancelled if the
uchchadhipati of the same Rasi (where the neecha planet
is) be placed in kendra.
This very rule is also found in some treatises of general
astrology. Some instances on this principle are quoted
below. The foliowing stanza is quoted here from Shambhu-
Hora:
Kheehara yadi cha neechabha-sthta-s-tadapi
tunga-nayakah
Kendragau hi bhavatah samudbhabe keertitau
nripati sambhavaya tau.
i.e., if a planet (kheehara) be placed in its sign of
debilitation (neechabha-sthita) together with the planet
who will be exalted there, and both of them are in kendra,
Nripati Yoga or Raja Yoga is formed.
The principle of this is the same Sreemanta-yoga as stated
in the above Sutra of Jaimini.
There are other variant readings of this which "If at birth
a planet be placed in its debilitation Rasi, the lord of that
Rasi and the lord of the Rasi where the said planet is
exalted, are both in kendra, a Raja-Yoga is formed."

T HE importance of vargas or subdivisions
in prediction need not be emphasized here as great
authors like Venkatesa Daivagna and Kesava Daivagna
have treated it very exhaustively in their immortal works.
These vargas of the zodiacal signs and the positions of
planets in these sub-divisions clearly show that the rays
of the planets falling at particular angular points are
conducive to wealth and prosperity and that the contrary
results ensue as and when these angular positions are
disturbed or changed. Nadi Granthas which are acclaimed
as masterpieces are but a systematic and scientific study of
the minutest parts of the zodiac and the permutations and
combinations of planets in them. Circumscribed as it is by
calculable measurements of time, space and dimensions,
human intellect when given the opportunity, delves deep
into the realms of the immeasurable and incomprehensible
and achieves wonders which are indescribable.
Ancient texts have laid down several combinations of
sub-divisions such as Shadvarga (6), Saptavarga (7),
Dasavarga (10), Dwadasavarga (12), Trayodasavarga
(13), Shodasavarga (16), etc., which are but selected
combinations of vargas. I shall now set out the opinions
of different authors on the subject.
Varahamihira in his Brihat Jathaka lays down:
Dreshkanahoranavabhagasajnastrimsakad-
wadasasanchithachcha, Kshetram cha
yadyasya sa tnasya vargo horethi lagna
bhavanasya charddhyam
meaning, Kshetra or the whole, Hora or half, Drekkana
or l/3rd, Navamsa or l/9th, Dwadasamsa or 1/12th and
Trimsamsa or l/30th of a sign are each termed a varga of
that sign and the term Hora means Lagna and also half
of a Rasi. The combination of above six vargas is called
Shadvargas.
Regarding Saptavargas, Garga says:
Kshetram, Horardha dreshkane navamse
dwadasamsaka, Thrimsamsakascha vargeyam
sarvasya samudrahritha. Thrayadhlthpavpi

padartheshu sthithaha sweshu swavarghagaha,
Panchavargagathoapyevam graho bhavathi

But Surya Jathaka dealing with Saptavarga states:
Lagna hora thribhagascha sapthamsco,
navamsakaha, dwadasamsasththrimsamsallavaha
saptakavargaka.
The Saptavargas, according to another version, are Rasi,
Hora, Drekkana, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa, Trimsamsa and
Shashtyamsa.
Dealing with Dasavargas, one text lays down that the
Lagna or the whole, the Hora or half, Drekkana or l/3rd,
Swaramsa or l/7th, Navamsa or l/9th, Dasamsa or 1/10th,
Dwadasamsa or l/12th, Kalamsa or l/16th, Trimsamsa or
l/30th and Shashtyamsa or l/60th of a sign are termed as
Dasavargas.
According to some the combination of the following
twelve vargas is called Dwadasavarga, i.e., (1) Rasi, (2)
Hora, (3) Drekkana, (4) Padamsa, (5) Panchamamsa, (6)
Shashtyamsa, (7) Saptamsa, (8) Ashtamsa, (9) Navamsa,
(10) Dasamsa, (11) Ekadasamsa or Labhamsa and (12)
Dwadasamsa.
Trayodasavarga means combination of the above 12 vargas
plus Shashtyamsa. But according to Venkatesa Daivagna,
the Trayodasavargas are the combination of Lagna,
Hora, Drekkana, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa and
Trimsamsa with Adhimitramsa and the four Uttamamsas
and Shashtyamsa.
It is important for the students of astrology to bear in
mind these several divisions correctly. If a planet is
strong in Rasi, in Hora, in Drekkana, in Chaturthamsa,
in Panchamamsa, in Saptamsa, in Navamsa, in Dasamsa,
in Ekadasamsa, in Dwadasamsa, in Shodasamsa, in
Trimsamsa and in Shashtyamsa, it will extend to the
native all the highest possible benefits which he is capable
of bestowing by nature but on the contrary if the planet
occupies an unfavourable position in a good number of
vargas be will produce immense evil as ascribed to him.

According to Sarvartha Chintamani the combination
of any two vargas is called Parijata, combination of
three vargas is termed as Uttama; when four vargas
combine under single lordship, it is known as Gopura
and in the case of five vargas it is called Simhasanamsa.
The combination of six vargas is called Paravata and
when the number is seven a potential synthesis called
Devalokamsa arises. The joining of eight vargas is called
Suralokamsa and the union of nine divisions is known
as Iravatamsa. When ten vargas join under one planet it
is called Vaishnavamsa and when eleven vargas join it is
called Saivamsa. The union of twelve vargas goes under
the name of Bhaswadamsa and when the number is thirteen
it is called Vaiseshikamsa. Though there are about 150
sub-divisions, so far as I know, I have come across only
combinations upto thirteen sub-divisions listed above.
Phaladeepika lays down the results of the combining of
several vargas described above. A planet in a Parijatamsa
will cause the native to be respectable and endow him with
many good qualities, wealth, happiness, power and dignity.
A planet situated in an Uttamamsa will make him modest,
intelligent and respectable In behaviour. A planet that has
attained Gopuramsa secures thelperson concerned good
intellect, wealth, lands, cows and house. A planet placed
in a Simhasanamsa will cause the native to become the
friend of a king or one on par with him. The planei that
has to his credit Parvatamsa will endow the native with
very good horses (vehicles?), elephants and other such
princely appendages. The person in whose nativity a
planet has attained a Devalokamsa will be a king or equal
to him in status, renowned for his hospitality and sense
of justice. The planet that has gained an Iravatamsa in a
person's nativity will make him second only to God Indra
fit to be saluted by other kings. The planet in Suralokamsa
confers the native with good luck, wealth, corn, children
and kingship.
On the contrary if at birth a planet be weak in all the ten
vargas, it will cause the death of the native. If he is weak
in nine vargas, he will bring destruction to his family; if
afflicted in eight vargas, he will fetch life-long misery;
in seven vargas it will secure for him calamities ; in five
vargas it will be a source of unhappiness and misery; in
four weak vargas, he will be recklessly attached to his
relations and consequent miseries; in three vargas, he will
be foremost among his relations; in two vargas, he will
make friendship with a king. If a planet is weak in only
one varga, the native will be wealthy and if it has no weak
varga to its credit, it gives the native a status equal to king.
New in respect of combinations of various vargas one
important point to be considered is whether it is possible
for any single lord to govern all the thirteen vargas to

form the unique Vaiseshikamsa. I will emphatically say
that it is not possible and that is not what is intended
according to Sastras. In this connection 1 would like to
recall the opinion of Venkatesa Daivagna who says that
the combination of Saptavargas with Adhimitramsa and
the four Uttamamsas and Shashtyamsa constitutes what
is called Trayodasa-vargas.
What are the four Uttamamsas ? They are (1) Moolatrikona,
(2) Swochcha, (3) Swakshetra and (4) Kendra. These
auspicious amsas (degrees) give planets much vitality
and strength to produce favourable results. For instance,
a planet in a particular house and in particular degrees
is considered as situated in Moolatrikona. The Sun has
Moolatrikona in Leo, the Moon has it in Taurus, Mars
in Aries, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Sagittarius, Venus
in Libra and Saturn in Aquarius. Out of this, the Moon
and Mercury have their exaltation and Moolatrikona
amsas in single sign and in the case of other planets their
Moolatrikona is located in one of their two own houses. I
am appending herewith a table showing exaltation, deep
exaltation, Moolatrikona, own house, debilitation and deep
debilitation for easy reference;
The result accruing from exaltation, deep exaltation and
Moolatrikona will be different from the result arising out of
own house. About Rahu and Ketu, Jyotisharnava Navanita
states that all the twelve houses are said to be the own
houses of Rahu and Ketu. According to Gopalaratnakara
Rahu's exaltation sign is Gemini and own house is Virgo.
But Uttarakalamrita states that Rahu is exalted in Taurus
and owns Aquarius. The 7th house from that Rahu will
be the exaltation sign and Moolatrikona of Ketu. There
is no unanimity of opinion. The readers may accept what
they think is correct.
The 1st, the 4th, the 7th and the 10th from the Ascendant,
called Kendras, are well known for their importance to all
students of astrology.
Let us now see what is Adhimitramsa. All planets bear
to one another certain relationship such as friends,
foes, acquaintances, indifference and intimacy. These
relationships are defined with a view to show the
augmenting and counteracting influences of various
planets in shaping the destiny of mankind. Permanent
friendship according to some is as follows: Mars, the
Moon and Jupiter are chums of the Sun. Mercury is
ordinary. Venus and Saturn are his enemies. The Sun and
Mercury are friends to the Moon and the rest, Jupiter,
Mars, Saturn and Venus are neutrals. The Sun, the Moon
and Jupiter are friends of Mars. Saturn and Venus are

while the Moon is foe. Jupiter has the Sun, the Moon and
Mars as comrades. Venus and Mercury are his foes and
Saturn is neutral. Venus has Saturn and Mercury as friends,
Mars and Jupiter are neutrals and the Sun and the Moon
are enemies. Mercury and Venus are friends of Saturn, the
Sun, the Moon and Mars are enemies of Saturn and Jupiter
is sama (neutral). Mantreswara in Phaladeepika observes
that the friends of Rahu are also the friends of Ketu. The
same holds good of enemies and neutrals.
In Chamatkara Jyotisha it is said that the friends of Rahu
are Venus, Mercury and Saturn, the enemies are the Sun,
the Moon and Mars and Jupiter is neutral. As regards Ketu
the friends are the Sun, the Moon and Mars, the enemies
are Venus and Saturn and the neutrals are Mercury and
Jupiter.
These are the conflicting views about the friendship and
enmity of the two nodes.

Planets Friends Neutrals Enemies In addition to this Sarvarthachintamani says that Rahu
has Venus, Jupiter and Saturn as friends and Ketu has
Sun Moon Mercury Venus and
Mars and Saturn
Venus, Saturn and Jupiter as chums.
Jupiter Varahamihira in his Brihat Jataka sums up the opinions
Moon Sun and Mars, Jupiter, None of others which he does not commend. He agrees with
Mercury Venus and Satyacharya's view which is as follows : Planets are
Saturn friendly to any given planet when they happen to own the
Mars Sun, Venus and Mercury 5th, 12th, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 9th houses reckoned from the
Moon and Saturn planet's Moolatrikona Rasi or when they happen to own
Jupiter the planet's exaltation Rasi. The rest are his enemies. Place
Mercury Sun Mars, Jupiter, Moon the planet in its Moolatrikona and mark the 2nd, 12th,
Venus and Saturn 5th, 9th, the planet's exaltation Rasi, the 8th and the 4th.
Jupiter Sun, Moon Saturn Mercury and The planets who are twice visited become friends; planets
and Mars Venus once visited become acquintances and planets that are
Venus Mercury Mars and Sun and not visited become enemies. But the Sun and the Moon
and Saturn Jupiter Moon become friends on a single visit sicce each owns only
Saturn Mercury and Jupiter Sun, the one sign in the zodiac. Accordingly we get the following

Rama was approaching the court of Dasaratha. Up until
now Rama remained in his quarters without interacting
with anyone. Sage Viswamitra came with a purpose
and Dasaratha first denied his wish. Then upon Sage
Vasishthas advice Dasaratha agreed to send his son Rama
with Sage Viswamitra. The doorkeeper who went to bring
him explained Ramas condition. Sage Viswamitra had
said to bring Rama here and that he would resolve his
problem.

Rama had to be sent for, twice. The second time he was
called Rama left his room and came towards the court. He
saw the presence of sages Vasishtha and Viswamitra. Rama
appeared like Sri Subrahmanya Swami. Sage Valmiki
had great affection and devotion towards Subrahmanya.
Subrahmanya is Jnana Skanda. Rama is also now a seeker
of Jnana. Some feel that Sage Valmiki is from South India.
Rama appeared gentle and pleasant. His mind
appeared at peace. There was no turbulence.
The face expressed repose. He has merged his
mind in Omkara. It appeared as if Omkara
itself was walking towards the court. The
physical description of Rama is wonderful.
Sita asked Anjaneya Swami if he had seen
Rama. When he said yes, she asked him
to describe Ramas form. This occurs
in Sundara Kanda. This was a great
test for Hanuman. Except for Sita no
one else had complete knowledge
of Ramas physique. He deeply
meditated and began the description
of Rama from head to toe. He is
well proportioned and that He is of
an auspicious form.
We keep pictures of God and Guru in our
homes. They radiate good vibrations.
Youngsters keep photos of cinema
heroes, heroines, athletes and other stars.
Their faces do not inspire us with any divine energy, as
do the pictures of gods and Guru. But the faces of these
other local heroes may inspire the youth to strive towards
certain worldly goals.
Rama is humble and noble. He is radiant and free from
anxiety. His body is fit for receiving the initiation to reach
the highest spiritual state of enlightenment.
We must all think about this lifes journey, its nature and
purpose. Rama explored deeply into the subject.At the
beginning of the work, Rama is described in all aspects
mind, body, and emotions. Rama is now entering the
stage of youth. It is at the adolescent stage.
Generally, youth at this stage people are accused of
arrogance and instability. But Rama appears wise as an
elder. He is unhurried. He is not appearing troubled. He is
not also fully joyous. He has not yet obtained the highest
bliss yielded by a complete spiritual awakening. All his
internal queries have not been fully answered yet.
The stagnant water has flown away. But the fresh water

has not flown in yet, to fill the space. We become disciples
to attain eternal bliss. He appears contented. His thoughts
include questions like, why do we embark on this journey
of life and what is the purpose of life. He has completely
thrashed out the topic in his mind. There is no need for a
college education for doing this. A genuine interest and
curiosity are required. At a young age these questions
arise but later they disappear. One must continually
ponder over them.
Rama appears pure and unblemished. All virtues
are in him. Has he earned them or have
they been attracted to Him? The virtues
themselves wished to become purified by
being associated with Rama. They wished
to gain further power and fame. It was
not due to his yearning but theirs. He is
generous. He follows the righteous path.
In Ramas eyes and face there is an
attraction. But to the discerning eyes
of sages it was evident that there is
an unfulfilled desire in Rama.
Everyone watched him approaching.
Even from afar, Rama offered
his prostrations and greetings.
Dasaratha was very happy. He had
doubted whether he would come.
Rama prostrated to the feet of the king after
introducing himself. Rama was invited to sit
on the kings lap but Rama preferred to sit on
the floor. When one makes a phone call, one must disclose
the identity first, before beginning a conversation. That is
the reason why Rama introduced himself.
Rama sat on the floor comfortably on a carpet placed
for him. Along with him, his brothers Lakshmana and
Satrughna also took their seats. One should be seated
comfortably and without any anxiety and fear when
listening to the words of Guru.
Dasaratha questioned Rama about his current state. He
continued to lament that he is saddened to see him like
this. He looked pale and weak. Dasaratha asked Rama
what troubled him as he appeared like an unaware person,
despite all his knowledge. Dasaratha stressed that Rama
was a jnani. Dasaratha is a great king and a scholar.
The elders and gurus speak wise words. Those who do
not follow the path shown by gurus and elders fall into
delusion and become dejected. You must not fall into
such a trap. You should listen to the elders and follow
their advice. Do not be restless due to troubling doubts.

This advice applies to all of us. Just like looking through
a magnifying glass, we make our small troubles appear
mountainous. That is the sign of ignorance and illusion.
As long as we are not subjected to illusion, we are free
from despair. Get rid of your sadness and be happy. Do
not fear these small problems.
Rama sat still showing no reaction.
Sage Vasishtha spoke thus, O prince, you are extraordinary
in your valor and courage. It is very tough to conquer
the inner enemies. You have defeated all your enemies
and even vanquished your inner enemies. Now you are
drowned in delusion like an inferior being. One who dives
into a frozen ocean will become frozen and immobile.
You are unable to distinguish between the desirable and
the undesirable.
Guru is here trying to attract the attention of the disciple
towards himself. He continued, Rama, do not allow this
condition to overpower you.
Sage Vasishtha had spoken such words to Rama before
several times. But Rama had not heeded them. Sometimes
those who are in chronic depression have to be jolted out
of their condition with some harsh words. That is the
reason Sage Viswamitra thundered at Rama, to shake him
out of his state.
Sage Vishwamitras words are not gentle. Sometimes some
have to raise their voice and use harsh words to stimulate
some reaction. Sage Viswamitra thundered, Why do you
appear frightened? Why do your glances dart about as
if in fear? What is your problem? We are here to dispel
your troubles.
Rama is a prince. He will have certain self-respect and
dignity. It should be jolted a bit.
Sage Viswamitra continued, Why do you remain in this
condition of anguish and delusion? Disclose the reason for
your sorrow. You are not fit to be subject to such a terrible
condition as you are suffering now. You are competent to
remove this problem yourself. Viswamitra spoke firmly.
Rama felt elated like a peacock as it dances at the sound
of thunder and rain clouds.
When someone like Rama is being scolded it should be
done very cautiously. He is the future king. It will go down
in history that Rama was scolded by Sage Viswamitra.
In the case of children, while scolding or blaming, one
should take care not to do any permanent damage to their
feelings and reputation. Sage Viswamitra himself was a
king once. He is a Rajarshi. He knows the feelings of a

prince.
Rama felt that this is the right time and situation for him
to express himself. Up until now, he had not revealed to
anyone his mental anguish. He is now going to dig up
from the bottom of his heart whatever is bothering him,
and express it.
12thsarga: Ramas initial words and his 5 questions
Five important questions/doubts are expressed by Rama
dispel our own doubts.
Rama sighed with relief. He felt confident to express his
mental state and spoke thus, You have asked me. So I
am expressing myself. It might appear as arrogant if I do
not honor your command.
When we are challenged, we want to defy the command.
But Rama is advising all us that no virtuous person should
ever go against the wish of elders. When offered a boon,
one must mention a wish. Ramas first statement is highly
philosophical and spiritual. Aham-kaaram (spice) will
give us indigestion. I am the Supreme soul. I have taken
this body and am born as this Rama. I am born as a child
in the household of King Dasaratha. I gradually grew up.
Krishna at birth appeared as Maha Vishnu with four arms
and carrying all weapons. Devaki was frightened. Then
Krishna assumed his form as an infant. Rama did not do
any such tricks.
Rama continued, I am responding to your command. I
know nothing, and yet, I speak to obey your command.
No one should disobey the orders of the elders. This is
Ramas advice to us. Since you asked to know the reason
for my sorrow, I am telling you.
Rama is coming from a great distance. This body, this
Rama, is originally the Supreme Soul. This took birth
here. We grow tall till age 23 and then we begin to grow
sideways. We gradually grow.
If we go searching backwards, we reach the seed state,
the source.
Rama continued, I went for studies. I have learned what
was taught at Gurukula. I am now seated here before you.
Ahambhaava is different from Ahamkara. Ahambhava
is regarding oneself as none other than God Himself,
recognizing the divinity in oneself.
I have completed the pilgrimage as per my own wish. I
have no interest now in any enjoyments. A thought has
taken root in me. I pursued it.

This train of thought must be introduced to all, for
the benefit of society. It is very important to have this
knowledge. Social benefit is not restricted to providing
utilities and building bridges. Benevolence must be
promoted. This exploration is not for only the aged. From
childhood this thought process must be initiated and
promoted. Never foolishly question, why Vedanta? Why
rituals? This second question is less harmful, although
even rituals should not be defied and challenged.
Chanakya established a great kingdom. But how did he
live? For the benefit of society, he lived in a hut. The
kings fell at his feet and depended on his valuable counsel.
A foreign king came, not to visit the king, but to visit
Chanakya. He was told that Chanakya does not live at the
palace but in a hut at the outskirts of the city. The foreign
king went on foot to pay a visit. He found a small lamp at
which Chanakya was reading a book. Chanakya put out
that lamp when the king entered and lit another lamp and
greeted the king and began to converse with him. The king
questioned the reason for this strange behavior. Chanakya
replied, Since you are here on official business, I use
official materials. When I do my personal work, I use my
personal funds to light my lamp. The kings perspective
changed and he initiated new procedures and principles
back in his country when he returned. Chanakya wrote the
Artha Sastra, a great treatise about finances.
You can win with knowledge, not fear. What can the police
do to control bad behavior? Fear does not protect us for
long. The knowledge that his habits are harmful will stop
a man from doing harmful things. Knowledge is lacking
in this world. That is the cause for all the atrocities in the
world. A lot of abuse of people and children is occurring.
It is because of lack of spiritual knowledge. It is important

to spread this knowledge. This is the missile that protects
our country. One British man wrote in his letter that until
the education system in India is corrupted, this country
couldnt be won over. They succeeded in doing so and we
have become victimized.
Vedanta study will benefit all of us and will yield success
in all fields. Rama asks, What is bliss? Why is it not
enduring in me? What is this world and what is the cause
of this series of births? What is the beginning and where
is the end? I thought about this. All are being born.
Samsara is not just spouse, children and family life.This
is the most important topic in Vedanta. What good can we
grasp from this? We must not look for negative ways of
interpreting it and make ourselves unhappy.
Rama says, I found an answer as to why people are
getting born. People are born to die. This is the truth.
Everyone in society should have at least a small quantity
of this philosophical knowledge. Then we would be
useful to society and we will win Gods grace and receive
enlightenment. We die to be born again. The seed called
death is the cause for birth. The seed called birth is the
cause for death. I have analyzed the topic and have come to
this conclusion. These are like twin poets. I have realized
this truth. Hence, I am like this. What is the flaw in me?
Please explain to me.
Rama placed his findings before the assembly. They are
not direct questions. We will proceed to the five questions

Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga
and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different from the Nityayogas.
The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable. The Chara
Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni, Chatushpada,
Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti
(or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The forbidden Karanas are marked
in red for easy identification.
We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi
Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. Pournamipooja is done in the evenings
on days the full Moon is prevalent. Chandradarisana is observed on the evening on the day when the crescent Moon appears
for the first time in the west after the Amavasya. Chaturthi of the Krishnapaksha or Bahula Chaturthi of every month is known
as Sankataharachaturthi. The evenings of Sukla and Krishna Trayodasi days are specially observed as Pradosha Vrata days.
