Water and Salt Solution Experiment
Objective:
To investigate the effect of salt on the boiling point of water.
Materials:
100 mL of water Beaker Tripod
Salt Alcohol Lamp/Bunsen Timer/Wristwatch
burner
Stirring Rod Lighter/Match
Gauze mat
Thermometer
Procedure:
1. Add 100 mL of water to a beaker.
2. Add tablespoon of salt to the beaker then mix the solution using the stirring
rod.
3. Measure the initial temperature using a thermometer.
4. Set the gauze mat placed on the tripod then place the Bunsen burner/alcohol
lamp underneath.
5. Light the alcohol lamp then heat the beaker by gently placing it on top of the
tripod.
6. Continue heating the water until it boils.
7. Observe the whole experiment period.
8. Record the temperature after every moment.
Conclusion:
As we all know, the boiling point of water is 100C but what we observed is
that despite the little flame underneath and there was no top cover for the beaker, it
somehow expedite the boiling point. One thing we read and we learned from our
previous sciences, when we add any solute in water, it somehow raises the boiling
point. If were not mistaken, it is the elevation of boiling point. And yes, we
happened to witness it but only on few instances because the vapor are rapidly
moving upwards lowering the level of solvent which is water. The evaporation
occurred very quickly that is why we concluded this observation. The faster the
evaporation of a solution, the faster its boiling point.
