MRC TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION PROGRAM

Who We Are:
MRC Translation and Interpretation Program (TIP)
trains bilingual and multilingual Binghamton University
students, faculty, and staff to serve as volunteer
translators/interpreters for on- and off-campus
community agencies in emergency, crises, and non-
emergency situations. The goal of TIP is to provide well
trained translators and interpreters to help address
the immediate needs of the growing university and
community in a variety of bi-or multilingual settings.

What We Do:
TIP works closely with the various offices and
departments at Binghamton University to bridge
the language and cultural gaps for both the campus
community and the greater Binghamton area. We work
with students and their families who need to overcome
language or cultural barriers and who are in need of
language services. While we provide interpretation
and translation services related to helping people
with limited English proficiency obtain access to
important social service, we also welcome and provide
translation, interpretation, and cultural competency
assistance to for-profit and nonprofit organizations in
local community.

Services We Provide:
Emergency services- We provide language services to Binghamton university students and
their families in emergency situations, or crises where families have limited English language
proficiency.
Non-emergency services- We provide language services to on-campus agencies, local K-12
schools, government agencies, and non-profit community organizations in non-emergency
situations. Services include but are not limited to: translation documents, interpreting, and
planning/running cultural workshops.

INTRODUCING NSLS

NSLS stands for the National Society of Leadership and Success also know as Sigma Alpha Pi. The
organization is made up of students who have shown leadership ability and
have taken the steps necessary to set them on a path for success. The NSLS
provides a whole host of benefits to its members via speaker broadcasts,
success coaches, and access to exclusive scholarships and awards.

NSLS Binghamton University chapter elected its first executive board at the
end of spring 2016, who have been hard at work recruiting new members
and setting up opportunities to engage the current inducted member. This
hard work has paid off, as NSLS Binghamton received official recognition,
in September, as a honor society through the campus Student Organization
Recognition Committee. The society is the nations largest leadership honor
society and the new Binghamton chapter is the latest to join the other 507 already established
chapters nationwide, comprised of 577,705 members. The society uses a step-by-step program
during its induction process to develop leadership skills, provide a way for self-reflection and expose
to students its nationwide network.

The NSLS membership, which is lifelong, provides students with access to a myriad of benefits
ranging from exclusive scholarships, on campus events, and an online job bank. Eligible students
are often nominated by a supervisor, professor or other faculty member. Society membership has
shown a track record for success. Around 89% of society members start careers in fields of their
choice and 83% of those students directly attribute their success to their involvement in the NSLS
program. Having just begun their chapter on the Binghamton University campus and given the
NSLSs impressive track record, we look forward to seeing the extent of their impact on the Bearcat
community.

Fall 2017 Speaker Broadcasts

NSLS Binghamton will be hosting several public speaker broadcasts for the campus community to
attend. These broadcasts will either be live simulcast of nationally renowned speakers or rebroadcasts
of previous speaker events. Either way the NSLS speaker broadcasts provide a wonderful opportunity
for students to gain access to wonderful thought leaders.

CULTURE CHATS
Culture Chats is a series of interviews conducted by students featuring Binghamton
University faculty, staff, alumni and the like! This series will help you get to know diverse
professionals who currently work at or have attended Binghamton. You will have an
opportunity to get to know the person, gain advice or learn about unique and interesting
pathways to careers.
Culture Chat with Joshua Gonzalez, Vice President of Multicultural Affairs for the
Student Assocation at Binghamton University.
This month I did an interview with Joshua Gonzalez, Vice President of Multicultural Affairs for
the Student Assocation. Today we will learn more about how he has been adjusting to his
position and the impact he plans to make on our community.

Heres what he had to say:

Me: What is your name, occupation, and where are you from?
Joshua: Hello! My name is Joshua Gonzalez, Im a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
major, Africana and global studies minors, and an accelerated student (3+2) pursuing a
masters in Urban planning. I am the current Vice President for Multicultural Affairs and a
student here. I am from Harlem NYC but my parents are from the Dominican Republic.

Me: What is your role at Binghamton University and some of your responsibilities/
goals in your position?
Joshua: I am the VPMA, so my role is to help the multicultural community and be the
bridge between the student body and the administration. I am here to serve students of
all marginalized communities and to help promote unity in the multicultural community.
some of my initiatives include serving our LGBTQ+ individuals by making their preferred
gender pronouns more accessible, creating programming surrounding via a lets talk about it
campaign focused on shedding a light on different types of traumas and multicultural topics,
and creating more inclusive events.

Me: What would you tell a student who is thinking about running for Vice President
of Multicultural Affairs?
Joshua: This isnt a position you should take lightly. This isnt something you do for a
resume builder or to take up time. You need to really love the community, you need to be
open and empathetic and understand that individuals live much different lives than you.
Everyone has their own unique experience, and to be VPMA is to understand and respect
that. You must be someone whos willing to listen and to cater to everyone, no matter what
background they come from.

Me: How do you like to spend your free time?

Joshua: I love to dance, relax with friends, play video games, read about fashion, watch
sports whenever Im in the mood, or go running. Im into a lot of pop culture so Im really
into a lot of TV shows that range from Game of Thrones to Attack on Titan.

Me: What advice would you give to students who want to get involved on campus?
Joshua: Start small! Dont bite off more than you can chew, you can easily get
overwhelmed. Before you get into any major positions on campus, make sure you are
mentally ready to do so, always take care of your mental health first.

Me: What is your definition of diversity?

Joshua: The current SA executive board is a good example. Diversity isnt just one person
of each racial background, its a melting pot of multiple people from different places. A lot of
movies and shows like to have one PoC character in them and call that diversity. That really
isnt, its just catering to an audience and giving us one token. Diversity is a rainbow, of
different racial, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. Different mentalities and sexual
orientations, physical abilities, and religious orientations are also parts of diversity, its not
just about the color of your skin.

Me: Whats your favorite place youve visited?

Joshua: Shanghai was amazing. I went to China via Binghamtons study abroad program.
In Ten years Shanghai is going to be an amazing city center. The skyline and all the sites are
really breathtaking. Its an absolutely beautiful city.

Me: What are your interests/hobbies?

Joshua: Im really interested in art and fashion. I love dressing up and feeling put together.
Im always in the know about whats going on in the fashion world and I hope to someday go
to a fashion show during mens fashion week. Im also into making art, reading about politics,
and music. I like to watch a lot of talk shows, I really enjoy last week tonight with John Oliver,
hes hilarious and informative. One of my favorite tv shows right now is Rick and Morty, Im
really into sci-fi and comedy so its perfect for me.

SCOUTING SEASON

The weathers dropping, were grabbing our jackets,

and getting closer to a special someone? You can
try to hide it, but we know your intention. It turns
out that theres actually a science behind Scouting
Season: The decrease in weather temperature causes
an increase in the number of single people wanting to
CUFF, so that means scouting out that person is key.

So if youre one of those perpetually single people

out there, maybe this Fall season is the time to
experiment with the stable, responsible, and well put
together side of yourself. And if you find out that you
value your freedom and the single life is what you prefer, then of course thats okay too. For
everyone who has accepted the cuffing challenge, here are a few tips and tricks to help you
through the season.

1. Get into the dating mindset: allow yourself to be available for approach

2. Socialize: This means events, hangouts, dinners, etc.. You never know who
might catch your eye

3. Date with purpose: unfortunately

snapchatting, facebook stalking, and
texting do not mean you are dating.
Identify someone who is cuff worthy and
invest your time in them. People are more
likely to say yes during this season, so go
ahead and make your move on the cutie
youve had your eye on.

4. Create your cuff playlist: Drake,

Jeremiah, and Justin Timberlake are highly
recommended

5. Bring out the cuffs and lock it down:

Youve been dating now for a month or so
and your SO is hot, intelligent, and totally cuff worthy. Make it official and purchase
a couples snuggy because, congratulations!

You are now cuffed!

here at Binghamton University, majoring in Marketing. He currently started
fashion blogging for College Fashionista. You can read more of his fashion
articles at collegefashionista.com. Here is an article he wrote for our newsletter:
The fall season is almost upon us, and for those who enjoy fashion it means two
great things: layering and breaking out warm accessories. Layering, is really a
staple in the fashion industry, as it allows people to transition from the colder
temperatures of the day to the warmer ones by simply adding or taking off a few
layers of clothing or accessories. Scarves, beanies, jackets, and even hoodies are
perfect layering tools, especially for students as we make the trek from the wind
tunnels to the warm classrooms.

This student, Mia Ciulla, shows off how to layer while adding her own personal flare.
She starts off by tackling one of the latest trends, the white t-shirt under a dress, by
pairing a simple white tee with a dress she got from her mom. Adding a white t-shirt
creates a background which contrasts the dress and allows the flower print to pop and be
the main focus of the outfit. On top of her dress and T-shirt she put on a thrifted denim
jacket to combat the cold and add another layer. Denim jackets are not only a great and
versatile option for outerwear, but they also allow the outfit to be dressed down a little
for class and normal day-to-day activities. To finish off, Mia included a camel-colored
scarf which complemented the colors in the dress, added another dimension to the outfit,
and provided her with warmth as she went about her day. Quick tip for layering: use
neutrals to complement and match other pieces in your outfit. Neutrals are an easy way
to add another dimension to an outfit without having to worry too much about if the color

exactly matches! To finish off this look,
she wore her black leather ankle boots
with subtle quilt detailing. Black boots are
a staple of winter fashion as they match
everything (except navy) and are great for
enduring the snow.
The next fashionista pictured is a
little more daring with her outfit as she
sacrifices her warmth for fashion. This is
one of the most fashionable people Ive met
and a good friend of aamine, Sophia He. To
start off she threw on her basics: a pair of
black skinny jeans, a black crop top, and a
thick black fabric choker. Her favorite color
is black if it wasnt obvious, and she says
that black is the one of the most neutral
colors and one of the most versatile colors.
Another tip I have is to embrace black in
your wardrobe! Black
pieces can make great
starting points for outfits
and allow other pieces
of an outfit to become
the focal point. Related
to this, Sophia added

another favorite of hers, a faux fur coat. She

loves them because they are super warm and
really stand out among all the typical coats
around campus. Although this outfit only
encompasses a few articles of clothing, the
monochromatic basis of the outfit paired with
the statement fur coat elevates the outfit to a
higher level fashion-wise. One final tip: when
creating an outfit, dont try to go overboard
by adding too many statement pieces, start
off simple with some basics and then add the
statement piece to draw attention to it and
not overpower the ensemble.
