Strathmore is acting as a playground for se-

rious concern, as a large number of the com-
munitys younger generation continue to be
displaced, seeking refuge on a friends couch,

The number of Strathmore residents between
15 and 25 years of age who are currently with-

alarming rate, according to individuals in con-
tact with those down and out.
Notwithstanding the fact that Strathmores
vagrant are not readily visible in the town
sleeping on park benches or hanging out in
parks local businesses, churches and schools
are becoming aware of the seriousness of the
situation. No fewer than 50 individuals are esti-
mated of resorting to couch surfing crashing
on friends couches and wandering from place

Comic book and game store, Hobs Hobbies,
has established itself as somewhat of a hub for
teenagers in Strathmore. Owner John Hilton

er, volunteer and board member on homeless
organizations in Portland, Grande Prairie, Mil-

After a gruelling seven-week compe-
tition, Lethbridge band Youngbloods
emerged victorious at the first annual
Battle of the Bands on Aug. 25.
The screamo-rock band beat out five
other finalists with a high-energy show
complete with dancing and head bang-
ing.
Im surprised to be honest with
you, said Youngbloods lead singer
Kyle Hogan. There was a lot of really
good acts.
The Youngbloods took home the top
prize of $1,500 and opened for Meghan
Patrick on Aug. 26 at the Strathmore ag
grounds. They will also host a radio
program on 95.1 Golden West Radio at
some point in the future.
Hogan called out to the crowd dur-
ing the Youngbloods second last song
to come down from the grandstands
and dance in front of the stage. Half of
those in attendance joined the group
which definitely helped in the audi-
ence interaction category.
We really feed off other peoples en-
ergy and other people having fun, said
Hogan. We like to have fun with the
crowd.

Committee Downtown Enhancement & Storm Drainage Line Installation - The next phase of
the project is sidewalk removal and replacement as well as underground
electrical work. Fenced sidewalk corridors and temporary entrance walkways
of the Whole will be constructed to allow for pedestrian traffic. All businesses and services
will be open during construction. During this phase, the intersection of Second

be marked to re-direct traffic. Parking is available on the Northeast portion of

Youth homelessness on rise

Together with the economic downturn, which

staying behind with friends while their families
move out of town in hopes of better employment
prospects. In turn, these individuals have trouble
finding work and overstay their welcome, forcing
them to move on to other couches, possibly falling
in with a bad crowd or living on the streets.
Couch surfing itself isnt the problem, its ac-
tually a good thing because it means somebody
is doing something to help, said Hilton OBrien.
The first goal of therapy is awareness. We have to
be able to see it for what it is. That largely means
we have to demystify it so we can look at it with-
out being a figure of fear.
The situation isnt just present in Strathmore.
Siksika Nation Councillor Ruben Buck Breaker
is aware of over 300 of his nation members dis-
placed due to the floods, waiting for housing and
finding temporary shelter in trailers and some-
times cramming into homes with roughly 10 oth-
er people. According to Richard Rodgers, director
of outreach for the Strathmore Overnight Shelter,
Wheatland County is also facing a youth home-
lessness issue within their communities, and he
knows of at least 12 couch surfing teenagers in
Carseland alone.
Milkshake Mondays finding success
James Barrie, 17, poured a vanilla milkshake on Aug.
28 to help raise money for the Strathmore Youth Clubs

However, while larger cities such as Calgary
have numerous resources in place to accommo-
date the youth the Boys and Girls Club, and Av-

on rural areas has been an ongoing problem in
Alberta.
A 2014 study Rural Alberta Homelessness by
Jeanette Waegemakers Schiff, Ph.D. and Alina
Turner, Ph.D., examined rural homelessness in
20 Alberta communities with populations un-
der 25,000. While the research did not include
Strathmore, the findings stated that an increasing
number of communities are reporting sleeping ac-
commodations not considered safe for habitation
and couch surfing as a measure of last resort in
rural areas. The information also acknowledged
the lack of research and data currently available,
making it difficult to understand the scope of Al-
bertas rural homelessness situation.
The dilemma is one Rodgers is accustomed to.
Its really impossible to count because how are
you going to collect the (data)? Are you going to
knock on everyones door? said Rodgers. You
cant collect accurate data here. In Strathmore and
the rural area its a little bit more difficult. There
are so many issues and so many reasons to couch
surf. You have to identify it first. One step at a
time. No one wants to talk about it. If you dont
see people lying in the park, it doesnt mean we
dont have a problem with homeless.

Wheatland County looks at the future of renewable energy

Wheatland County is looking forward to the fu-
ture of renewable energy resources, such as wind
and solar, within the county with the help of the
Miistakis Institute.
The Miistakis Institute created a proposal Wind
and Solar Decision Support Tools for Rural Munici-
palities in Alberta after previously approaching
Wheatland County council with a funding request
to aid in the advancement of a project addressing
large-scale wind and solar development.
At the time, council approved $5,000 in funding
for the project.
In total, the Miistakis Institute secured $30,000
in funding from the Alberta Association of Munici-
pal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) to allow phase
one of the project to move forward.
Wheatland County has since been asked to allow
one staff member to sit on an advisory committee
for the project, that will be made up of four to five
people.
Weve already got solar and weve got lots of
wind so I think that we need to know whats going
on out there, said Councillor Ben Armstrong about
allowing a staff member to sit on the committee.
Either Russel Muenchrath, Wheatland Countys
agricultural fieldman, or a staff member from plan-
ning and development will sit on the committee
and bring back information to the county.
Phase one of the project, which included base-
line research, engagement and fundraising, was
hoped to be completed by the beginning of Octo-
ber. However, the project is already behind sched-
ule.

During the Aug. 15 regular council meeting,
council voted in favour of allowing a staff member
to sit on the committee and to bring information
back to council, the Agricultural Service Board and
to the appropriate departments.

lem concerning the availability of storage space
and allowed storage solutions on land the fire de-

Albertans expect integrity of government and pub-
lic representatives. Recent revelations involving MLA
Derek Fildebrandt were unethical and remediation
was expected by constituents. Mr. Fildebrandt demon-
strated accountability and accepted responsibility for
his actions. His decision to step down from the United
Conservative Party (UCP) is a faultless action at this
time. As addressed in his Aug. 15 statement, media
controversy is distracting from the work that must be
done as the UCP is founded.
A public issue has quickly evolved into personal
territory as Derek and his young family have been
subjected to hateful, unproductive online rhetoric and
intrusive media. Undoubtedly, the media climate was
orchestrated to sensationalize issues and secure his
political demise. Regardless of partisan affiliation, hu-
mility must prevail and privacy extended to his family.

CARSELAND FIRE HALL OVER BUDGET
It is anticipated the new Carseland fire hall could
come in as much as $1.7 million over budget. How-
ever, nothing will be certain until the request for
quotations is completed.
The estimation for the new fire hall was $1.2 mil-
lion which was based on a new fire hall recently
built in Dalum for the same price. However, it was
recently made known that a fire hall was just com-
pleted in Three Hills for approximately $2.5 mil-
lion and another one further west was built for $3
million.
We are going through the final steps to go out
for request for quotations for that and then we will
be bringing back that information to council. An-
ticipation is it will be over budget but we dont
know how much its going to be more than we
thought originally, said Parkin.
The budget set aside for the new Carseland fire
hall will not see the county through the entire
build, however it was mentioned there is some
money in reserve that may be used to cover the
shortfall. Once exact numbers are brought back to
staff, a formal recommendation and proposal will
be made to council concerning funding, when ap-
propriate.
ARE PARADES A PRIORITY?
Following the Strathmore Stampede and Heri-
half of his constituents on a variety of issues through-
out his term. His fresh, enthusiastic approach to
politics and libertarianism is appreciated. He was an
early advocate of conservative unity and travelled the
province extensively to gain support, but more impor-
tantly, listen to Albertans.
Derek has acknowledged his responsibility to the
Strathmore-Brooks constituents and has demonstrat-
ed transparency in formally issued statements. Going
forward, as trust is regained and integrity restored,
the constituents will decide his political future.
In the meantime, I respect Mr. Fildebrandts deci-
sion to focus on the needs of his family. It is time for
the rhetoric to shift to constructive policy develop-
ment, and the restoration of prosperity for our beauti-
ful province.

McBride Career Group is hosting its
annual fall job fair at the Strathmore
Curling Club on Sept. 7 to help people
job skills.
A new component this year will fea-
ture booths set up for universities, of-
fering prospective employees another
option to find work.
Universities can get their names out
and show what kind of programs they
have, said administrative assistant
Cassi Morris with McBride. If students
are interested in applying for univer-
sity it has a really good focus towards
the high schools right now.
Universities from all over Alberta
will be attending the career fair includ-
ing University of Calgary, University of
Lethbridge, SAIT and Bow Valley Col-
lege. Previously, McBride hadnt asked
universities to attend because they
wanted to focus on employers; but this
year they wanted to expand and ap-
peal to more people.
McBride hosts job fairs every spring
and fall with the last event drawing in
roughly 120 people, according to Mor-
ris.
Morris also stated there will be 21
tables for businesses and universities.
While many people pursue the univer-
sity path, others are searching for work
now.
Businesses are able to come out and
promote themselves as well, some of
them will possibly be taking applica-
tions on site, said Morris.
McBride, in conjunction with the
federal government, will also be pro-
moting the Experience Counts: TIOW
(Targeted Initiative for Older Workers)
program which is tailored to senior
workers aged 55 to 65. The program
aims to help people in this age group
to develop job skills, such as typing
and resum building.
Basically, we give them skills in
computers, personal developmen, and
employment development, said Mar-
cie Burtniak, a TIOW career coach with
McBride and former participant in the
program. The program really gears
you towards feeling better about your-
self using the skills and experience
youve had and putting those back into
action so you can be employed.
Originally the event was scheduled
to take place at Sacred Heart Academy
but was relocated to Strathmore Curl-
ing Rink with a new time of 3 p.m. to
7 p.m. on Sept. 7.

Councillor Alice Booth suggested a
permanent unit already decorated to a
theme, without the need for plastic dec-
orations, so that a councillor could hook
up to the float and attend parade events
without fuss.
You have to make it easy. Its not go-
ing to work if we have to do what we
did before, said Booth.
Council decided to look at the option
of having a permanent fixture float in
more detail when next looking at the
budget.

Environmental stewardship
a success in County

Environmental stewardship has re-
cently been a common theme through-
out Alberta and Canada.
Similarly, Wheatland County had put
environmental awareness at the fore-
front of their agenda for 2017, and
with the upcoming creation of the
2018 Environmental Action Plan (EAP),
environmental awareness is sure to
play another prominent role next year.
In 2016, Wheatland County adopted
an environmental policy to recognize
the importance of protecting the en-
vironment. Around the same time, an
environmental coordinator position
was created at the county office to
aid Wheatland County in becoming a
leader in environmental accountability
and to head environmental programs
within the county.
With the 2017 EAP, we established
an environmental steering committee
made up of staff, said Alyssa Cum-
berland, environmental coordinator at
Wheatland County. We talked about
projects that we could do within the
upcoming year that had some sort of an
environmental stewardship component
to it or anything that does something
good for the environment. We pulled
together things that we could accom-
plish in 2017 or that were already

we thought might benefit the county.
The 2017 EAP was created and im-
plemented to include projects such as
environmental compliance, commu-
nity consultation, carpooling and idle
reduction, Crowfoot Creek watershed
resiliency and restoration, Wheatland
County office building efficiency im-
provement, LED streetlight conversion,
environmental stewardship recogni-
tion, a composting trial, toxic waste
roundup, Rosebud River erosion con-
trol, paper use reduction, reclamation
and road construction, water protec-
tion initiative and agricultural plastics
recycling among many other projects.
Earlier this year, Wheatland County
held a trio of Environmental Open
House community meetings in Rose-
bud, Hussar and Namaka to inform
residents and ratepayers about ongo-
ing environmental projects, and to try
and engage the public to come up with
ideas and critiques that they would like
to see done or changed in the 2018
EAP.
The purpose of that was to put
feelers out for projects that the public
would like to see us do as far as envi-
ronmental awareness and environmen-
tal stewardship goes. The idea is they
will be incorporated into next years
action plan (and to) bring forward a
yearly plan as to what the county is do-
ing with (environmental stewardship),
said Cumberland, who added the Rose-
bud open house showed good public
attendance.

During Wheatland Countys Aug. 15
regular council meeting, one council-
lor said she did not remember much
being brought to council regarding the
creation of the 2017 EAP and that she
was unsure how involved council was
with the project.
Wheatland Countys chief administra-
tive officer (CAO) Alan Parkin replied
that council had successfully voted in
favour of receiving quarterly reports
concerning environmental awareness
progression.
My recollection was that our rec-
ommendation to council, and council
supported it, was that we wanted the
municipalities and the people in the
municipalities to lead this and not have
council say, this is what we need to
do, said Parkin. He added the ground-
work for the 2018 EAP is just getting
put in place and that council will be
more involved next year.
Reeve Glenn Koester said he recog-
nized several aspects in the presented
report and that there were also a few
new components that make perfect
sense to him.
Koester had also attended two out of
three of the environmental open hous-
es and said feedback given by the pub-
lic to him was very positive.

to bring together public opinion, staff
opinion and council opinion, said
Cumberland, who added that to date,
staff at the county office have strongly
embraced several environmental proj-
ects.

world because it reduced the chances of organ
rejection fewer side effects. Many lives have been
saved due to this one drug.

Rural crime concerns

Over the past year, I have heard from many constituents of
Bow River concerned about rural crime.
I believe that this is a very serious matter. The crime affecting
isolated rural homes and farms in our riding is not just a local
phenomenon. As recently reported by CTVs Laura Payton, the
RCMP is facing a serious nation-wide staffing shortage, and it
is limiting officers ability to respond to rural calls in a timely
manner. If you have not done so already, I would urge you to
read the article* it is an eye-opening account, which demon-
strates that the concerns of our ridings rural residents are part
of a larger problem taking place across Canada.
Having spoken with many of you that have been impacted
by rural crime, as well as RCMP officials, I am convinced that
action must be taken, and soon, to address this issue. In many
cases, the RCMP is stretched too thin over vast rural areas, and
need additional support to increase their efficacy
in remote locations. I will continue to communicate
with the relevant authorities to resolve this issue.
Another matter that may affect many residents
of our region is the Liberals proposed private cor-
poration tax changes, which are intended to close
tax loopholes. The government is targeting three
supposed loopholes: income sprinkling (which is
the practise of shifting income to family members),
converting a corporations regular income to capi-
tal gains, and retaining passive investment in a pri-
vate corporation.
While much of the controversy over these chang-
es has focussed on their impact on medical profes-
sionals, as reported recently in the National Post**
they also have the potential to place a new tax bur-
den on businesses in our riding. Some of the sup-
posed loopholes are used by farmers to deal with
cyclical changes in yields and income. If your farm
is incorporated, please consider speaking with an
accountant about these proposed tax changes, as
they may affect you directly.

Strathmore RCMP are actively involved with a
number of initiatives aimed at reducing auto thefts
including educating the public to the risks and pre-
ventative measures that can be taken. Most vehicle
crime is opportunistic and therefore preventable.
Help protect your vehicle by identifying risks and
taking away opportunities for thieves.
The Facts:
Strathmore and the surrounding area has had
an increase in the rate of theft of motor vehicles.
Thefts of motor vehicles are occurring all days
of the week.
Thefts of motor vehicles were highest between
midnight and 6 a.m.
Over half the vehicles stolen were trucks and
of those, Ford F Series were the most commonly
stolen.
Many of the vehicles stolen were left unlocked
with the keys in the vehicle.
Several offenders arrested in possession of the
stolen vehicles are from the City of Calgary indica-
tive of crime spillover from a major urban centre.
Offenders will steal vehicles to sell, for trans-
portation, or to commit other crimes.
What to do:
Report suspicious persons and/or vehicles to
your local police.
Get to know your neighbours no one knows
their neighbourhood better than those who live in
it. Residents are able to identify unknown persons
or vehicles that do not belong in their area.
Treat your vehicle keys like cash, keep them
with you or in a secure location
Do not leave a spare key hidden in the vehicle
offenders know all the hiding spots and will look
for them.
Never leave your vehicle unlocked and running
even if its just outside your residence or you are
running into a store for only a few minutes. Of-
fenders will take advantage of the opportunity.
Always secure your vehicles and never leave
valuables or personal effects inside.

Adrienne Fish returns to
Boston Pizza comedy show

Canadian comic Adrienne Fish performed her
colourful act and made the residents of Strath-
more laugh at multiple stories surrounding topics
of identity, sexuality and travel at Yuk Yuks Com-
edy at the local Boston Pizza on Aug. 24.
Sometimes I love having nice, intimate, tighter
shows because you can see everyone, said Fish.
Theres a different vibe that gets created with a
smaller crowd.
Fish generally stuck to stories or experiences
she had in her own life but said she wanted to get
more into political-themed jokes.
Its a lit bit tricky to make that stuff funny but
Im sure as time goes by Ill figure it out, said
Fish.
Fish originally got her start as a comedian af-
ter she returned home from a trip. She was tell-
ing her friend about her travels which her friend
laughed through and told her to try stand-up.
It was kind of a eureka moment, said Fish. I
tried it. I loved it.
According to Fishs website, the Toronto come-
dian has performed across the country and the
U.S., including performing at Just For Laughs 42.
Fish was joined by Calgary comic James Moore
who warmed up the crowd with some jokes
about marriage, bikers, and cities versus small
towns. Moore had nothing but praise for his fel-
low comic.
He himself was a late bloomer and didnt start
performing comedy until he was 43 years old. Ac-
cording to Moore, the trick to performing is read-
ing the audience.
If you read them wrong, you have a lot of peo-
ple sitting with their arms crossed glaring at you,
said Moore. You have to find out where the level
of the room is at and whats going to appeal to

Ford pick-up truck, which hes shown
at nearly 30 exhibitions since.

possessions, it was one of the vehicles
entered in this years Gleichen Steel on
Wheels Show and Shine that has run in
conjunction with the Gleichen Fall Fair
for the past five years, and last week-
end helped celebrate the fall fairs mo-
mentous 33 years in operation.
Over the past three decades, the Glei-
chen Fall Fair has grown to include a
parade, the Gleichen Lions Club break-
fast, the Show and Shine, various ven-
dors and numerous activities for kids.
This year the Gleichen and District
Agricultural Society also honoured
Canadas 150 years since confedera-
tion. However, organizers also faced
their share of obstacles, from harvest to
competing with other events such as
the Chestermere Lake Show and Shine
to low attendance.
Nonetheless, the Gleichen Fall Fair
on Aug. 26, and the Gleichen Rodeo
which took place earlier this month,
act as a requirement for eligibility for a
building operational grant from the Al-
berta Association of Agricultural Soci-
eties that allows for the Gleichen Arena
and Curling Club to stay functional.
Its grown in some ways, as we now
include a Steel and Wheels Show and
Shine, but diminished in other ways,
said Brenda Tower, chairperson for the
Gleichen and District Fair Committee.
Weve noticed over the years a de-
cline in the exhibit entries in the bench
show. The general public foot traffic
through the trade fair and bench show
has decreased also. That being said
the fair, show and shine, and rodeo
is something that we in the Gleichen-
Cluny community feel is necessary to
sustain our rural grass roots. We are
always looking for new volunteers to
help us keep these organizations alive.
The Gleichen Figure Skating Club
took first place in the parade with their
van covered in Canadian flags and bal-
loons. Eight-year-old Lateycia Rabbit

Carrier joined her fellow figure skat-
ers by waving and throwing candy to
onlookers. It was Rabbit Carriers first
time participating in the parade and
her mother Kendras first time at the
event. While she lives just across the
tracks on the Siksika Nation reserve,
she was unaware of the event previ-
ously and hopes more members of her
community get involved in similar fes-
tivities in the future. Rabbit Carrier is
already planning on coming back next
year.
I really like it, she said. Its sad be-
cause my community is just across the
tracks and nobody really gets together
for stuff like this.
Drawing participants and visitors
from all over Alberta, the Gleichen
Steel on Wheels Show and Shine once
again showed off some vintage auto-
mobiles and raised money for the Al-
berta Childrens Hospital through their
50/50 tickets and silent auction. Last
year the organization raised $218 for
the cause. For Gleichen locals Tracey
and Jim Green, the event organizers,
the venue is important to their cause
and year after year continues to receive
wonderful feedback.
We decided that charity from day
one when we started, its the up-and-
coming future, the kids are our future
with these cars, said Tracey Green.
When we first started it was dif-
ferent; people werent quite sure. The
town is an older town, and kind of for-
gotten and lost, and this brings people
out.
Putting a few more miles on his clas-
sic Ford that was made for low-gear
racing, achieving speeds of 55 miles
per hour, Stewart came from Cluny to
participate. The hobbyist, who took
mechanics in high school and is also
the owner of a vintage tow truck and
a Mustang, values these events to con-
nect with other like-minded people
with similar interests and to reminisce.
I wouldnt even own a new car, I
cant stand them, he said. In the 60s,
everything was clear and you could see
better, of course now I have the cata-
ract. It was a rebellious time. It was just
a different time and you cant ever go
back.

Rona steps up to help overnight shelter

In joining upwards of 20 local busi-
nesses, Strathmores Rona is the most
recent enterprise to contribute and give
back to the community, by donating
hundreds of dollars worth of supplies
to help the anticipated overnight shelter
complete its finishing touches.
Rona provided the Strathmore Over-
night Shelter (SOS) with 100 10 ft. 2x4s,
six pieces of drywall and a bucket of
screws, valued at $738.
The contribution ensured the SOS
board did not have to dip into their
pockets of private donations, and in-
stead they can allocate those funds to
other necessities, such as an alarm sys-
tem, fire system or additional building
supplies.
It shows people that the community
sticks together and that theyre willing
to help a fellow man, said Richard Rod-
gers, director of outreach for SOS.
The first person I thought to ask was
Rona. They give a lot to the community
and I want to stay local before I go to
the city.

Whether you are a seasoned artist or musician,
have no experience or something in-between,

where any adult can connect with others and have
a quality, fun community artistic experience.

rite workshops as well as our beloved annual Fall

- Sing Your High Note is our Tuesday bi-weekly
hour-long music therapy workshop for all adults.
Although choosing songs from our songbook and
singing them with others of all ages is the main
activity each week, you do not have to know how
to sing or read to benefit. The rhythm and the en-
ergy of the music and the other participants can
provide stress relief as well as bring
other benefits. Music therapy has
been shown to help treat depression
and anxiety, and memory loss associ-
ated with diseases such as Alzheimers
disease and dementia. Our Sing Your
High Note is a happy opportunity fa-

shop. As with all our opportunities, Upcycling
is for any adult from any background or experi-
ence. Upcycling is a marvelous, fun way to relax
and connect with others while helping the envi-
ronment as it uses recyclable materials to create
beautiful and useful pieces. In this workshop, we
create pieces for the community as well as our-
selves. Some of these pieces can be seen around
Strathmore. Each project is planned with easy,
medium and challenging options to enable any
adult to create. And the schedule for these proj-
ects is relaxed you do not even have to finish a
project in one workshop. The last Thursday of the
month is our Open Studio Day that gives time to

A few local distance athletes
competed in their sport at the
highest international level last
month.
Kelly Yorston of the Strath-
more Run Club just returned
from the Mont-Tremblant Iron-
man in Quebec.
The race took place Aug. 20,
as Yorston looked to complete
both legs of the full Ironman
stops in Canada.
Two years ago, she complet-
ed the Whistler Ironman, where
she crossed the finish line in
14:23:05, placing 42nd in her di-
vision and 272nd in her gender.
The demand required in train-
ing for a triathlon proved too
much for the mother of three,
so she promised to step back
from the sport for one year to
focus more on her family. Once
the year passed, she wasted no
time in getting ready to prepare
for the Quebec installment of
the race.
The idea of the Quebec race
entered her mind immediately
after finishing the Whistler race,
when she heard people buzzing
and comparing how the Whis-
tler race stacked up to the one
on the other side of Canada.
I had to try it out. I hired a
personal coach to help me train
this year and I think it paid off.
We focused a lot on my nutri-
tion and switched to an 80 per
cent liquid calories diet before
the race instead of a solid-calo-
rie diet, and it made a big differ-
ence, said Yorston.
The changes in her training
and diet played a big role, as
she finished an hour and fif-
teen minutes better at Mount-
Tremblant than she did in Whis-
tler, coming across the line at
12:48:09.
It was an amazing and fan-
tastic race. The community is
one of a kind and supports the
Ironman race more than any
other city I have seen, said Yor-
ston. Cars dont try and drive
the cyclists off the roads there.
She finished the swim in
1:22:11, polished off the bike in
6:27:26 and completed the run
in 4:49:31.
Yorston placed 19th in the 35-
to 39-age category and 145th in
her gender.
Next on her calendar is an-
other scheduled year away
from the sport to spend more
time with her family, followed
by the thought of competing
in 2019 at the Ironman in Lake
Placid, N.Y.
Usually a triathlon runner
but doesnt call himself a long-

competed in his first aquathlon
during the International Triath-
lon Union World Champion-
ships Aug. 25 in Penticton, B.C.
The aquathlon featured a
swim and a run, skipping the
bike portion of the traditional
triathlons.
I thought it would be cool to
compete in Penticton, nice and
close to home with some fam-
ily members. In the back of my
mind, I wanted a top-five finish,
but it felt a little far off, said
Mertz.
It wasnt until the eve of the
race when he began to imagine
a top-three finish.
After crossing the finish line
in 35:33, he figured all hope
was lost, as the announcer quit
announcing the names of the
athletes that placed in the top-
five.
He was patiently waiting for
his sister-in-law, Amy Kinnear
to finish her race, when a friend
texted him, alerting that he
indeed finished fourth in the
world in his age group.
I was pretty surprised and
really, really happy to finish
fourth in the world. Of course,
I felt a little disappointed that I
didnt do better, I thought I let
myself down with a poor run
time, said Mertz, who also got
to share the completion with
his 13-year-old daughter Megan
and seven-year-old son Indi,
who were competing in triath-
lons. There is nothing better
than seeing my family out there,
giving it everything they have.
Still in Penticton, local Ar-
mand Pinel placed 30th in the
mens 40 to 44 age group in the
duathlon, a run-bike-run event,
opposed to a triathlon.
Pinel finished his first 10-ki-
lometre run in 44 minutes flat,
completed the 40km bike in
1:09:32 and dashed in the final
5km sprint in 20:46, giving him
a time of 2:17:27.
The event took place on a
steamy Aug. 26 afternoon at
the Dark Leopard CrossFit
gym in Calgary.
Sauve was building to-
wards this event all sum-
mer by competing in the
over-90-kilogram events,
but dropped down into the
U90kg for this event.
I was a little nervous
coming into the event. I
have been having some
trouble with my hamstring
lately, but everything felt all
right and I was able to pull
through, said Sauve.
The local strongman has
been dealing with some
hamstring tightness for a
few weeks after he strained
it during a leg wrestling
competition.
The hamstring held
up fine for the first three
events, but he said he felt it
barking at him for the two
speed events, in which he
placed second.
Sauve finished first in
the 100-foot farmers walk,
460-pound axel deadlift and
130-pound dumbbell press.
He did his best to impro-
vise and keep his right ham-
string tight, by wrapping it
several times in as much
duct tape he had lying
around. It worked, as the
hamstring only slowed him
down slightly during the at-

But before he takes off
to the east coast, Sauve
will make a quick stop in
Finland for the Strongman
Champions World Champi-
onships Sept. 9 and 10.
When asked if he was
concerned about burning
himself out with extra com-
petitions before nationals,
Sauve didnt seem too con-
cerned.
I have been pushing my-
self and competing in lots
of events all summer, so its
what I know how to do. It
typically only takes about
one week to recover from
each event, so I should be
good to go by then, said
Sauve.

Some familiar faces return to Strathmore Wheatland Kings camp

The familiar faces of last years Strath-
more Wheatland Kings donned the
training camp jerseys last weekend in
Indus with one big shocker.
The Kings coaching staff and parents
of his teammates were thrilled to see
Cole Busslinger step on the ice with the
team once again.
Following last season, Busslinger had
plans to attend the University of Wyo-
ming to continue his petroleum engi-
neering degree.
Thankfully for the Kings sake
plans fell through.
Busslinger and his family took a drive
down to Laramie, Wyo. to check out the
campus and to make a final decision
about his future education.
Its a gorgeous school with a gor-
geous campus. The big factor was the
price tag of going to school down
south. Just last spring, a new transfer
program called Energy Engineering
opened up at the University of Calgary
and it was fairly similar to the program
from Wyoming, said Busslinger. Also,
this way I still get to play for the Kings.
Busslinger will be entering his third
season with the black and gold. Last
year, he tallied 14 goals and 32 points
in 35 games and was named Heritage
Junior Hockey League Player of the
Week Jan. 29. He also won the Hardest
Working Player Award during the Kings
Awards last April.
Its going to be awesome to have
him back. It was going to be tough to
try and fill his spot on the team, said
Kings head coach Shadoe Stoodley. He
is an easy kid to coach. He listens well,
and his determination and work ethic
are second to none. He will be a big
part of this team moving forward and
we are happy he is back with us.
Along with Busslinger, 12 other play-
ers from last years 16-18-4 Kings were
in camp. Altogether, there were 34

Steve Stovka runs the Elite Hockey Development camp
from mid-April to the end of August and has done so for the
past eight summers.
In what started out as a one-on-one training session with
Josh Bishop years ago has blossomed into a pro-
gram with three coaches and now two groups.
New this year was a bantam group alongside
the junior prep programs.
The idea of these camps is to help train and de-
velop players to reach their goals of making their
desired teams the following fall.
We tell our guys that just because they train
with us doesnt guarantee them to make a certain
team that fall. But not training with us guarantees
that you wont make that team they have been
dreaming about, said Stovka.
This summer, Stovka housed 15 players in the
bantam group and 23 in the junior prep program.
Back when the CFR Chemicals Bisons were still
in existence, Stovkas program trained many of
the skaters who were featured on the ice each
weekend.
Former Bisons like Cole Clayton, Tyler Strath
and Kaden Hanas all excelled after working with
Elite Hockey Development and have became
prospects across the junior hockey circuit.
Hanas, a local product, has been working with
Elite Hockey Development for the past four sea-
sons and is currently going through training
camp with the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta
Junior Hockey League.
The program has been great for everyone that
has taken part in it. Steve always creates a great
atmosphere, gets the best out of the athletes and
does his best to get the players to the next level,
said Hanas.
The training program is structured around four
dry-land training sessions per week along with
two on-ice sessions.
Stovka handles the dry land, putting the kids
through proper weight-lifting regimes and run-
ning drills, while Doug Raycroft and Dan McDon-
ald handle the on-ice drills.
We will hold a bunch of scrimmages and shin-
nies throughout the summer, we wont seek out any
other training programs for games. We feel like our
coaching staff does a good enough job with the
players and working on drills as it is, said Stovka.
Hanas is thankful now for all the time and effort
put into Stovkas program, as it has helped him
immensely in Drumheller so far.
When you get to the next level, you are always
playing against guys who are bigger, stronger and
faster. Thats where the Elite Hockey Development
came in handy, said Hanas, who scored five goals
in 12 playoff games last season with the Bisons.
The on-ice workouts are great. They are nice and
loose, perfect for the summer time. They definite-
ly helped improve my foot speed and my strength
in the corners.
With a background in sports science and having
worked with the likes of Jarome Iginla and Martin
Gelinas in the past, Stovka believes he has got-
ten the most out of the facilities in Chestermere
and Strathmore to help produce talent at the next
level.
Lately, Elite Hockey Development camp helped
churn out recent Western Hockey League Bantam
Draft picks Kyle Crnkovic (ninth overall) and An-
son McMaster (23rd overall).
I just wanted to develop a program for local
kids that wasnt going to cost their parents a for-
tune. It has really taken off locally and thats all I
could ask for, said Stovka.

Ice plant update nearing completion at family centre

Hockey teams from Wheatland Coun-
ty have been forced to delay or relocate
their training camp programs while the
new ice plant is being installed at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
As part of the Canada 150 celebra-
tions, the federal government provided
extra grant programs for aging buildings
that needed infrastructure upgrades.
The old ice plant inside the Strath-
more Family Centre the thing that
keeps the ice cold was 26 years old
and in need of replacement.
The Town of Strathmore received no-
tification that they were awarded the
$450,000 grant from the government in
January. The town matched the grant, as
the project totaled $900,000.
We saw this as a great opportunity
to improve the facility over the summer
while decreasing the risk of something
going wrong in the middle of hockey
season, said Tracy Simpson, senior
manager of community services. It had
to be done this year.
The refrigeration system is the heart
and soul to any arena. Pipes underneath
the concrete keep the ice frozen and re-
usable, so spectators dont have to en-
dure bone-chilling temperatures while
they watch their favourite teams play.
The project began in April and is on
target to complete the final phase of
construction by mid-September.
Unfortunately, this has meant that lo-
cal hockey teams, such as the Strath-
more Wheatland Kings and Wheatland
Athletic Association (WAA) teams have
had to relocate their fall camps.
The Kings have borrowed ice time
from Indus, while the WAA has been
forced to use ice in Drumheller, Okotoks
and Indus.
We have known about the arena
for a long time, so it didnt come as a
shocker when we had to relocate our
training camp. Most of our guys either
live or work in Calgary, so it was an eas-
ier commute for them, said Kings Head
Coach Shadoe Stoodley.
The pricey new ice plant will not
force an increase in rental fees for the
2017-2018 season.
The town plans on holding a grand
opening Sept. 10 with a free family
skate to celebrate the new plant. More
details will be announced later.
The new ice plant was just one of sev-
eral plans and renovations taking place
this year as part of the Canada 150 proj-
ects.
The new ice plant at the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre is nearing its installation completion. The
project, financed in part by a large federal grant,
began in April.

Its hockey time once again for the
Wheatland Athletic Association (WAA),
as the program enters their 26th season.
Due to the new ice plant being in-
stalled at the Strathmore Family Centre,
all three teams were forced to relocate
their training camp to nearby arenas.
The peewee Braves broke camp at
the Bill Herron Arena in Indus Aug. 26
and 27.
It was really surprising to see 60 kids
come out and try out. I didnt think we
would get that many kids, said Braves
head coach Keith Klemmensen, who is
entering his seventh year behind the
bench with the Braves.
Last season, the Braves struggled, fin-
ished 10-19-4, but closed the season out
strong with a 6-0 shutout over the Cen-
tral Alberta Selects.
Like every year, Klemmensen is al-
ways around the arena, watching the
teams battle each other for roster spots,
but keeps his hands clean when it
comes to roster decisions.
I have been using a group of re-
spected and trusted hockey evaluators
for years. I feel like that is the fair-
est way to do this, said Klemmensen.
These things typically sort themselves
out anyways. After tryouts and a week
of practice, we typically have a good
enough idea who the top 15 players are
in the group.
The groups of hopeful tryouts were
split into four teams and faced off
against one another all weekend. Be-
fore the games began, Klemmensen
was on the ice putting them through
a skill session, assessing each players
level of puck handling and skating.
Only four players from last years
Braves squad were in camp. Tyler Fair-
bairn was named Rookie of the Year
last year when he tied for third on the
team with 15 goals. He, alongside No-
lan Bell and Adam Moore, took part in
the camp. Carter Gosling sat out camp
last weekend with a lower-body injury,
but Klemmensen assumes he will figure
into the teams roster once again.
A week of practice will cumulate with
a Red versus White exhibition game
Sept. 1 at Bill Herron Arena (6:15 p.m.).
Its too early to say what kind of
team we will have this year, but I have
a pretty good feeling we will be a lot
younger than last years team. Im not
sure if that is a good or bad thing, we
will see how they do once we start
playing against some of the stiffer com-
petition, said Klemmensen, who will
be joined once again by Slavo Halkovic
on the bench.
