Students are also required to complete an approved certification in exercise science. Upon
completion of the program students will:
1. Understand the basic concepts associated with the field of exercise science.
2. Demonstrate the ability of plan and execute basic physical fitness programming for
various populations.
3. Exhibit competency in the skills and knowledge required for an entry level position in
the exercise science field.

Our partnerships allow students to get a taste of industry careers from high performance
sport (Waikato Chiefs, BOP Magic and Cycling NZ) to community organisations (Sport
Waikato, Parafed and Disabilities Waikato).
Our facilities boast the latest equipment in sport science specialisations, namely The
University of Waikato Sports Labratory at the Cambridge Avantidrome and The University of
Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance, in Tauranga. Both are equipped with cutting-
edge facilities to test athlete performance, exercise and recovery, including an
environmental chamber for altitude training.
Specialisations
Movement Cultures
You'll understand the social and cultural aspects of consuming, producing and experiencing
sport and leisure in contemporary and historical settings, as well as critically exploring
movement in a range of settings, consider issues such as power, identity, gender, race,
inclusion, equity and diversity. You will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of
contemporary local and global trends. A BSpLS will open up a broad range of career paths,
equipping you with problem solving skills, creativity, critical thinking, communication and
reflective processing skills.
Applied Movement Sciences
Critically explore how the application of scientific principals can enhance health and well-
being, fitness and performance. You'll find out about anatomy, biomechanics, exercise
prescription, movement analysis, nutrition, physiology, psychology, strength conditioning.
Apply known scientific principals to examine current practice, explore innovative strategies
in the promotion, maintenance and enhancement of physical activity, exercise and sport.
Develop skills in applied movement sciences and develop the knowledge necessary to
thrive in a dynamic workplace across a range of movement contexts.
People Movement and Professional Practice
Develop an understanding of contemporary knowledge and skills related to teaching,
coaching, leading, volunteering, and instructing in diverse movement contexts. Explore
theory and practice in educational movement. Gain an understanding of the social and
cultural significance of movement in community and educational settings. Develop critical
thinking, planning, communication, reflective and contextually relevant skills necessary to
contribute to and lead equitable movement opportunities for all members of their
community.
Career opportunities
Sport and Leisure and Management with a second major in Marketing (BSpLS and
BMS or BCS). This is often chosen
by students who wish to pursue Sports Marketing as a career.
Sport and Leisure and Teaching (BSpLS and BTchg). If you are interested in
teaching sport you could apply to do a conjoint degree, or you could complete a
BSpLS degree and then apply for a one-year Graduate Diploma of Teaching or a
Master of Teaching and Learning.

A range of undergraduate papers have a practical component as well as those that
exclusively promote learning from experience in the field of sport and leisure. These papers
offer the chance to observe, participate, contribute, learn and critically reflect. They facilitate

CSUs Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (with specialisation) is a distinctive
multi-disciplinary program that prepares you for a rewarding career in the exercise
and sports industry.
Throughout this course, you will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to
practise as a professional in the sport, exercise, fitness and recreation areas, with a focus
on exercise and sport science. After one year of study, you may choose to undertake a
specialisation in Sport Management. This course also provides a foundation for
postgraduate study in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.

A qualification in Exercise and Sport Science can unlock a variety of opportunities both in
Australia and overseas. Rewarding careers can be found in:
Your Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (with specialisation) can also be a
pathway to a career in Physiotherapy. Students who successfully complete the degree may,
subject to university approval, enter the Bachelor of Physiotherapy with one year of credit.
Alternatively, you could apply to enter CSUs Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology with a
view to becoming an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP).
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Exercise Science and Sport Science is accredited by Exercise and Sports
Science Australia (ESSA) via the National University Course Accreditation Program
(NUCAP).
This course is recognised by the peak international body, the National Strength and
Conditioning Association (NSCA) in the USA. The NSCA Education Recognition Program
prepares students to become Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS), a
professional industry standard credential recognised worldwide. Graduates are therefore
well placed to gain employment around the world.

Literacy requirement
To be successful at studies within certain courses, students must be highly competent in
spoken and written English literacy. All students who do not have this level of competence
in spoken and written English will be required to independently organise some form of
coaching in English literacy, such as a short TAFE course or other form of tuition to improve
their skills. Students will be advised of their options by the Head of School from the campus
where they are enrolled.
If, after an agreed period of study in English literacy, a student's English literacy standard
has not improved, the appropriate Head of School will provide further advice with regard to
alternative career options.
Grado en Ciencias de la Actividad Fsica y del Deporte
Presentacin
La finalidad de este Grado no es slo la Educacin Fsica o el Deporte, sino algo ms
general: el movimiento del hombre, sean cuales sean las condiciones en que se realice,
desde los movimientos ms esenciales como la marcha o las posturas bsicas (sentarse,
caminar...) hasta los ms especficos como los de conducir un automvil o los necesarios
para practicar un deporte (Oa et al. 1999).
La configuracin actual, cientfica y bsica, de este mbito de estudio es bastante reciente,
como lo demuestra el hecho que slo hasta los aos 90 no se sustituye en Espaa el
trmino Educacin Fsica por el de Ciencias de la Actividad Fsica y del Deporte,
sustitucin que ha constituido una tendencia general en todo el mundo. Ha sido una
sustitucin necesaria para superar las carencias en cuanto a solidez y rigor del mundo
tradicional de la Educacin Fsica, aunque an hoy este debate permanece en algunos
crculos.
As, el alumno recibir una formacin en la que la Educacin Fsica y la actividad fsica es
abordada multidisciplinarmente, desde los conceptos y mtodos propios como de otras
ciencias relacionadas. Por tanto, la actividad fsica y la Educacin Fsica estn compuestas
por muchas ciencias que profundizan en el conocimiento del hombre en movimiento, y
cada una lo hace desde su perspectiva. Todas estas disciplinas son reas aplicadas que
comparten un mtodo similar, el mtodo cientfico, y un objeto comn de estudio, el de la
actividad fsica o el movimiento humano.
