Textbook: Limba Modern Englez, clasa a III-a

Lesson: 1. Welcome to Italy: Ordering food

Structures and vocabulary: can I have? a/an; some vs any; newspaper; chef; thief;
mushroom; bread; grapes

Aims: Ss learn to order food in a restaurant

Ss use the expression can I + short infinitive in different contexts

Ss complete sentences with new words

Ss learn to distinguish between any and some by filling in sentences with the two
words

Ss practice ordering food by filling in dialogues.

Materials: blackboard, chalk, textbook

Interaction: individual work, pair-work; whole class

Procedure:

1. Checking homework: exercise 2, page 45 5 minutes.

2. Pre-listening: brainstorming: T writes Italy on the board and Ss try to come up with words
related to this country. Ss write in their notebooks. T then asks Ss to look at page 46 and say
which words from the board they expect to find in the text. Ss answer and T informs Ss about
the new lesson 5 minutes

3. While-listening: T asks Ss to pay attention to the text they will hear and tick the words
they hear in their brainstorming map. T plays the audio and Ss listen. T then checks. T then
plays again note before Ss look at exercise 2, page 46. Ss listen and then they fill in the two
sentences. T checks 5 minutes

4. Post-listening: Several Ss will be asked to read the text. T asks about unknown words and
invites Ss to look at exercise 3, page 46. Ss write the words in their notebooks with their
translation.
Ss also work on exercise 4: T explains the task and then checks (T will also ask for the
references in the text). Ss then fill in the sentences from exercise 5 with the new words. T
checks 10 minutes

5. Consolidation: exercise 1, page 48 5 minutes.

6. Presentation: Before doing exercise 2, T explains the difference in meaning and use of the
words any and some.

Ss look at the sentences from exercise 2, page 48 and T asks Ss if they can understand the use
of the two words any and some. Then T explains:

We use some in positive sentences: There is some ice in the fridge./ We have got some new
books./I have got some new clothes.

Some may be translated as nite.

We use any in negative sentences and in most questions: There isnt any ice in the fridge./
Have you got any orange juice?/ I havent got any orange juice.

Ss write in their notebooks and then do exercise 2, page 48 in their notebooks. T checks and
gives feedback 10-12 minutes.

7. Semi-controlled practice: T explains the task for exercise 3, page 48 and Ss work in pairs.
T offers help and guidance 7-8 minutes.

8. Consolidation: T draws Ss attention on exercise 4 and asks them to do exercise 5, page


49 5 minutes.

9. Homework: exercise 6, page 49.
