Answer All Questions (Use of Heat and Mass Transfer data book is permitted)
Part-A (5x2) (10 Marks)
1. A 3 mm wire of thermal conductivity 19 W/mK at a steady heat generation of 500
MW/m3.Determine the centre temperature if the outside temperature is maintained at
25C.
2. What is the physical meaning of PRANDTL number?
3. What is lumped system analysis? When is it used?
4. List down the three types of boundary conditions.
5. What is heat generation in solids? Give examples.
Part-B (2x16+1x8) (40 Marks)
6. a. A composite slab is made of three layers 15 cm,10 cm and 12 cm thickness respectively.
The first layer is made of material with k=1.45 W/mK for 60% of the area and the rest of
material with k=2.5 W/mK.The second layer is made of material with k=12.5 W/mK for
50% of area and rest of material with k=18.5W/mK.The third layer is made of single
material of k=0.76 W/mK.The composite slab is exposed on one side to warm at 26C and
the cold air at -20C.The inside heat transfer co-efficient is 15 W/m2K.The outside heat
transfer co-efficient is 20 W/m2K,determine heat flow rate and interface temperature. (16)
(Or)
b. A steel tube with 5 cm ID,7.6 cm OD and k=15 W/mC is covered with an insulative
covering of thickness 2 cm and k=0.2 W/mC.A hot gas at 330C with h=400 W/m2C
flows inside the tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed to cooler air at 30C
with h=60 W/m2C.Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for 10m of the tube and
the temperature drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel
tube, the insulation layer and the outside air. (16 Marks)

7. a. An aluminum rod(k=204 W/mK) 2 cm in dia and 20 cm long protrudes from a wall which
is maintained at 300C .The end of the rod is insulated and the surface of the rod is
exposed to air at 30C.The heat transfer co-efficient between the rod surface and air is 10
W/m2K.Calculate the heat lost by the rod and the temperature of the rod at a distance of 10
cm from the wall. (16 Marks)
(Or)
b. A slab of aluminium 10 cm thick is originally at a temperature of 500C.It is suddenly
immersed in a liquid at 100C resulting in a heat transfer co-efficient of 1200 W/
m2K.Determine the temperature at the centre line and the surface 1 minute after the
immersion. Also calculate the total thermal energy removed per unit area of the slab during
this period. The properties of aluminum for the given conditions are,
=8.4 x10-5m2/s,k=215 W/mK,=2700 kg/m3,Cp=0.9 kJkgK. (16 Marks)
8. a. (i) Define thermal conductivity. How does it vary with temperature for gases? (4 Marks)
(ii) With neat sketches, explain the different fin profiles. (4 Marks)

(Or)
b. Explain briefly the concept of critical thickness of insulation and state any two applications
of the same. (8 Marks)
