Fall 2017

Dear Parents and Students,

Attached are the classroom rules and procedures we will be following this year in my classes.
These guidelines are more specific than the department course expectations issued for each class
subject that will be found on the schools website. Students will be given copies of any additional
procedures we introduce during the year.

In the class rules section there is a progressive discipline plan. Incidents will be noted, and
disruptive students may be subject to a minimum of after school detention. I look forward to being able to
contact you regarding your students positive achievement and behavior, rather than for discipline issues!

Students will be required to keep an organized 3-ring binder for this class. The details for the 3-
ring binder are outlined on the next page. Students should bring their 3-ring binder to class every day,
and it will be checked periodically for notes and daily warm-up exercises. The daily class notes and warm-
up exercises are an important part of this class, and students who complete the warm-up exercises (not
just by copying down the answers) and take good notes will have a better chance of success. You can
view the complete class notes on my website (see information below) if you would like to see how well
your student is taking notes.

All students are welcome to stop by my room for help before school or after school. Please make
the necessary arrangements for your student to come in for help if it is needed. I will be available
immediately after school for assistance most days until 3:00pm, and often later. Beginning a few weeks
into the school year, tutoring will also be available on our campus from the UNLV GEAR-UP program
every Monday through Thursday from 2:00-4:00pm. For students who ride a school bus to and from
school, a late activity bus is available every school day at 4:30pm.
Grades will be updated regularly on Infinite Campus. For instructions on how to access Infinite
Campus, please contact our office at 702-799-7207. Additional information for my class is available online
at www.misterplatt.weebly.com. From this page, you will be able to access some assignments, notes from
class lectures, handouts, recommended outside resources, and upcoming events. Grades are calculated
as 80% from summative assessments (tests and weekly quizzes), and 20% from formative assessments
(in class assignments, homework, and daily quizzes). Unit tests will be given 2-3 times per quarter. Test
retakes will be handled on an individual basis. For a test retake to be considered, students must show an
effort to learn the material, including completing all assignments.

Please review these class rules and procedures, and return the signed copy of the back page by
Thursday, September 7th. Please also include the best way for me to contact you.
I also would enjoy the chance to meet with you at our annual Sunrise Mountain High School Open House,
on Tuesday, September 15, from 6:00-8:00pm.

Thank you for supporting your childs education! I look forward to a great year.

My Best,
Robb Platt

7. Please keep the classroom clean. Throw away any trash around your desk, and take your
belongings with you when you leave.

Progressive Discipline Policy

Self-discipline should come from each individual. Since every action has a consequence,
students choose outcomes based on the choices they make with regards to their behavior.
Students who choose not to follow the expectations that are set forth show that they would enjoy
enrichment activities on managing their behavior. Accordingly, they can expect to receive warnings and/or
corrections from the teacher; conferences with the teacher after class, before or after school, or at lunch;
reduced participation grade; behavior contract; detention; letters and/or phone calls home; creative
sanctions; and referrals to the counselor or dean. The action taken will depend on the severity and
frequency of the misbehavior.
Major infractions, such as possession of weapons, theft, fighting, possession or use of narcotics,
and gross insubordination (threatening or cursing the teacher) will result in immediate referral to the dean.
1. Verbal warning.
2. Last to leave / stay after class to discuss with teacher.
3. Call home / detention.
4. Guidance referral, may result in a parent teacher conference.
5. Referral to Dean.

Class Participation Guidelines

1. When asked questions, students need to respond appropriately.
2. Raise your hand to be recognized. Do not call out an answer unless the teacher specifically
requests a verbal response from anyone in the class.
3. If another student is called on, do not blurt out an answer or interrupt when someone else is
speaking or thinking.
4. Students are expected to participate in all classwork exercises.
5. Participation includes taking organized notes that will assist you when studying and completing
homework.
End of Class Procedure
1. The teacher releases students at the end of class, not the bell.
2. Class will end most days with a daily quiz covering the days topic. Notes and other materials may
be used for daily quizzes. Daily quizzes will be turned in when students leave the room.
3. When a daily quiz is not given, students are expected to work until the bell rings.
4. If the teacher is speaking, do not pack up your belongings until you are dismissed, even if the bell
rings.
5. Please take all of your belongings with you when you leave, and throw away any trash around
your desk.

Whiteboard Procedure
1. Students will be selected to obtain whiteboards, markers, and erasers from storage.
2. Selected students will obtain the materials quickly, quietly, and without talking.
3. Students should test their markers prior to starting on work. Doodling after work begins is not
allowed.
4. Students will not use the markers to draw on clothes or desks, on themselves or other students,
or on any school or personal property.
5. Students will not write or draw anything inappropriate for the school setting.
6. Dry erase markers must be capped when not in use.
7. Whiteboards must be erased when they are returned.
8. Students will be selected to return whiteboards, markers, and erasers to storage.

Test Procedure
1. No materials are allowed on desks during tests except for the test, scratch paper, a calculator if it
is allowed, and a pencil.
2. Nothing is allowed on the students lap, and bags and all other materials should be on the floor.
Do not reach into a bag during a test for chapstick, makeup, lotion, a mirror, etc.
3. No talking is allowed while the test is in progress.
4. Cheating will result in the minimum grade allowed, and no retake will be offered.
5. Students who are absent must make-up the test when they return.
6. Students will not be issued a pass during a test. Let me know if you are sick before the test
begins.
7. Always show as much work as possible, and do not leave any free response questions blank.
Phone calls will be made to parents of students who leave test questions blank.
