Pulp Fiction to New Threads
Theres an interesting looking exhibition by the Canadian-born MYCHAEL BARRATT [1]
at CASTLE GALLERY from 28 APR20 MAY. Currently President of the Royal Society
of Painter-Printmakers hes renowned for being a great raconteur and his exuberant
personality shows through in his original etchings and paintings. A lifetime of scanning
artists monographs and reading everything from pulp fiction to classics has invested his
work with a vocabulary of half remembered impressions and brazenly pilfered imagery.
Sometimes these borrowed images will register with the viewer with a curious sense of
dj vu and other times with a hearty laugh.
Shows at INVERNESS MUSUEM AND ART GALLERY are always interesting and NORA
FOKs NEW THREADS [2] (running until 15 APR) is no exception, her work examining the
interaction between art and science. Mathematics and the three dimensional structures
underlying lifes natural forms are the starting points for these new series. The resulting
pieces occupy territory between bodywear and sculpture. There are three themes:
Exploring Flax which led her to develop a new thread combining nylon and flax; Magic of
Nature which shows the latest pieces resulting from Noras continuing fascination with
natural forms and the ability of nylon threads, and New Forms, New Technologies where
she uses 3D printing to create sculptural forms strongly influenced by the mathematical/
structural philosophy of Buckminster Fuller.
If photos are more your bag there are a couple of excellent opportunities to indulge
your love of the art form. PHOTOFEST 2017 at ABERNETHY OLD KIRK in Nethy Bridge
(0823 APR) has an eclectic mix of stunning images from ten photographers which
are available to purchase as prints or greeting cards, while the IONA GALLERY has a
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION by members of the Society of Badenoch & Stathspey
Artists who live and work in the Cairngorms National Park featuring work inspired by their
glorious surroundings. Its on from 0723 APR.

Local (super)Hero.
All you something-teen year-olds staring out of classroom windows letting a blur of
past participles, calculus, osmosis, onomatopoeia et al wash over you whilst actually
contemplating a life other than this, other than herea movie star, say; a word. It could
be you. And this month you can get to see the living proof as Inverness own KAREN
GILLAN reappears on the big screen in one of the biggest movie franchises as we get
the return of the 2014 surprise smash GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY [1], intriguingly
titled VOL 2 (EC & Vue from 28 APR)
Yes, you have to put in the hours (you could do worse than sign up for one of Eden Courts
sought-after drama courses, la Gillan) and no, you might not get the break, but its
darned exciting to see that its possible, eh? Karen reprises her role from the original as
Nebula, daughter of Thanos (who you say? Dont make me explain, just look up Marvel
and go from there) and evil sister of Zoe Saldanas Gamoralove interest to Chris
Pratts Star Lord. And shes blue, which is probably how she spent much of her childhood,
given the climes we live in. Anyway, shes not really a hero, as such, technically a villain
but its a superhero movie and shes from here, so shes our local hero. As Marvel/
DC etc films go, Guardians was a LOT of funyes, the story was too complicated, they
always are, but it was refreshing to be as funny as it was and has probably changed the
earnest face of the superhero movie for some time to come (Logan excepted).
Okay, you say, Guardians 2 is out at the end of the month, what else? Well tell you
what elseARNIE in Taken-esque AFTERMATH (Vue 07 APR), all-age animation THE
BOSS BABY [2] (EC & Vue 07 APR) where ALEC BALDWIN is (um...) the baby, the utterly
ridiculous FAST & FURIOUS 8 (yes, 8!) (Vue 14 APR), andpossibly our favourite
PEPPA PIG: MY FIRST CINEMA EXPERIENCE [3] (Vue 07 APR). Now we love Peps
(who doesnt) but if were honest (and we are), were not entirely convinced at the
formatbeing basically a film length sequence of episodes. Like going to watch a box
set in one gookay for 40-somethings with a carton of Ben & Jerrys and a complete
series of Gilmore Girls, not perhaps so much for the under 5s? Well see
Theres also a few films weve mentioned here beforefalse alarms as studios have
chosen to delay release (several times in some instances), not usually a good sign: for
example, GOING IN STYLE (Vue 07 APR), TABLE 19 (Vue 07 APR), and RULES DONT
APPLY (Vue 21 APR). The first is old-people behaving badly shtick directed by Zach Braff
with MORGAN FREEMAN, MICHAEL CAINE and ALAN ARKIN; the second is a Duplass
brothers wedding comedy starring ANNA KENDRICK (with appropriate 19% rating on
Rotten Tomatoes, ouch); and the last is Warren Im not reading that Beattys Howard
Hughes film, which looks promising but the studio appear to doubt.
Eden Courts offering is major this month. Aside from the from release pair of Boss
Baby and Guardians 2, you can catch Oscar biggies FENCES, LA LA LAND, JACKIE,
LION and ELLE, plus the moving CERTAIN WOMEN [4] (from 07 APR, with MICHELLE
WILLIAMS, KRISTEN STEWART, LAURA DERN) from ace director Kelly Reichardt,
whose excellent MEEKS CUTOFF [5] (18 APR) also screens as part of InFiFas
Female Directors season. Action comes from Ben Wheatleys star-filled FREE FIRE [6]
(21>), a JOHN WICK DOUBLE BILL (15 APR) and aliens v China THE GREAT WALL
(31 Mar>). True dramas MAD TO BE NORMAL [7] (07>) (with DAVID TENNANT as
psychiatrist R.D. Laing in 60s East London) and the well-reviewed LOST CITY OF Z [8]
(21>) (CHARLIE HUNNAM as 20s Brit explorer) nestle alongside the gritty TRESPASS
AGAINST US [9] (21>) featuring a great cast (BRENDAN GLEESON plays MICHAEL
FASSBENDERs dad for the second time this year!) with dodgy accents.
11
As ever ECs proposition is all about diversityso please dont overlook any of these
gems: WHOS GONNA LOVE ME NOW? (02 APR) a doc about an HIV+ Israeli man finally
finding acceptance in the London Gay Mens Chorus (who you can see via satellite post-
show); Irans Oscar-winner THE SALESMAN [10] (28>); Brit preg-horror-com PREVENGE
[11] (07>); weird-out PERSONAL SHOPPER [12] (14>) with KRISTEN STEWART; a doc
about the marvellous CHEMIKAL UNDERGROUND record label, LOST IN FRANCE (08>);
the divisively moving, exquisitely cast Frenchie ITS ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD [13]
(14>); and CYNTHIA NIXON as Emily Dickinson flick, A QUIET PASSION (28>).
THE MAYBEs: Not all films due for UK release will appear at Vue. Some will, some wont and
some will show in future at Eden Court. THE HATTON GARDEN JOB [14] sees old cockney wide-
boys PHIL DANIELS and LARRY LAMB join desparate MATTHEW GOODE to pull off the heist of the...
blah, blah. RIZ AHMED stars in unrealistically stylish London thriller CITY OF TINY LIGHTS, and
OSCAR ISAAC and CHRISTIAN BALE lead the epic line in a tale of the Ottoman empires demise,
THE PROMISE. LADY MACBETH stars FLORENCE PUGH and COSMO JARVIS in a passionate
period piece with more drama than costume for once, whilst GEMMA ARTERTON, SAM CLAFLIN
and BILL NIGHY prop up wartime romcom THEIR FINEST. COLOSSAL [15]with a fun cast
including ANNE HATHAWAY, JASON SUDEIKIS and DAN STEVENS might slip through the mainstream
wierdness filter. Its from the same Spanish filmmaker (Nacho Vigalondo ) who created the fabulous
Timecrimes, only with a Hollywood cast and a comedy Kaiju plot. Fingers crossed then

MUSIC
So much music on this month that theres only really room to give everybody a
passing mention. For more details check out our listings, but here are the names
you should be circling in your diary.
Folks invariably well represented up here and this month is no exception, the
stand-out perhaps being old-school legends FOSTER & ALLEN [1] celebrating their
40th anniversary at EDEN COURT on 09 APR, other relative veterans of the scene
being OLD BLIND DOGS [2] (EC, 05 APR), the always entertaining EDDI READER
[3] (STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, 15 APR & EC, 17 APR) and the excellent all-female
combo DOREC-A-BELLE [5] (EC, 15 APR). Proof that the genre is still thriving
comes from new kids on the block IMAR [4] (EC, 23 APR)containing members of
Manran, Rura, Baruleand TALISK [7], the latter outfit themselves playing EC on
30 MAR and demonstrating why theyre reaching a wider audience after praise from
the likes of Mark Radcliffe and Simon Mayo.
If theres one thing Inverness likes more than folk music though, its tribute acts
and theres certainly no shortage of them this month. Best of the lot are arguably
T. REXSTASY (EC, 14 APR) who have been going for a quarter of a century
longer than Bolans own career and are endorsed by the late singers family and
estate. Their set includes all the hits, both electric and acoustic, reminding us of
Marcs extraordinary creativity. Vying for top spot in your affections will be Steve
Vampires Rock Steinmans new show ICONIC [6] (EC, 15 APR), which features
hits from movie greats such as Kill Bill, Batman, Pulp Fiction, Purple Rain, Bond
and Mad Max plus iconic tracks from Queen, AC/DC, Tina Turner and Prince to
name but a fewwith an incredible stage set and fantastic special effects. More
tributes come in the form of THE CAVERN BEATLES (EC, 06 APR), THE GARTH
BROOKS STORY (EC, 25 APR), original Simple Minds member Brian McGee and
80s popster Owen Pauls combo, XSM (IRONWORKS, 08 APR), Amy Winehouse
homage LIONESS (IW, 15 APR), Ms Turner tribute TOTALLY TINA (EC, 27 APR), Kiss
manqu HOTTER THAN HELL (IW, 28 APR) and finally, Barry Steeles take on a
legend, THE ROY ORBISON STORY (EC, 30 APR).
Its not all people pretending though and a host of established stars are on their way led by
LLOYD COLE playing his hits at EDEN COURT on 06 APR, AMY MACDONALD [8] tearing
herself away from her fast cars to sing at IRONWORKS on 12 APR and regular visitors
ALABAMA 3 and HAYSEED DIXIE also doing their thing there on 22 & 29 APR respectively.
Rising stars in the shape of local lads LIONAL [9] at TOOTH & CLAW on 08 APR (supported
by highly regarded Wojtek The Bear), and the latest in that seemingly endless line of
beautiful, talented Icelanders HAFDIS HULD [10] at MAD HATTERS on 12 APR.

The Inverness Whisky Festival was already an essential date in the calendar of discerning
drinkers even before it incorporated what has become the hipsters favourite spirit, gin,
into its remit. Which means it should continue to attract an ever widening audience when
it returns, under the banner THE INVERNESS WHISKY & GIN FESTIVAL from 1822 APR.
Highlight of the festival is the concluding event at BOGBAIN FARM on SAT 22 APR from
noon-5pm, justifiably billed as THE BIG DAY OUT. This is your chance to try drams youve
only dreamed off, to savour gins youve gazed at lovingly but never tried. On arrival you will
be given a tasting glass and note book to help you on your journey. Exhibitors will be spread
throughout the farm buildings and there will be plenty of areas for seating, eating and really
savouring the drinks.
In addition Fired Up will be providing a Pop Up Restaurant with food available all day and
therell be live music and entertainment in various parts of the farm buildings to keep your
toes tapping. Plus, there are whisky and gin masterclasses throughout the day, but theyre
restricted to 15-20 people, so if you want to take part in them, its essential you book now
at invernesswhiskygin.com
Apart from the big day at Bogbain, there are plenty of other fringe events taking place
throughout the city for the duration of the festival. Highlights include an interactive gin
experience at Bar One on 20 APR which gives you the chance to make your own cocktails,
an evening pairing rare malts with exquisite cheeses at Bannantynes Health Club (APR 20),
a night exploring the history of Scottish whisky through tastings, music and song, involving
drams, craic and nonsense at MacGregors Bar in Academy St and a Whisky Festival
Dinner at Bogbain on the evening of 21 Apr when two superb chefs, Glenmorangie Houses
John Wilson and Fired Ups John Lockhart, will be preparing a menu of delicious food and
drink. This DUALLING CHEFS event might actually be the highlight of the whole festival as
DAVID HAYMAN, acclaimed actor and star of the BBC series Scotch - the story of Whisky
will be the guest at this special dinner which marks the launch of the accompanying DVD of
the show. A light hearted Q& A will follow before the gastronomic treat. Should be popular,
so book your tickets now. Full details of all the events in our listings (overleaf) >>>>>

Competitive cycling is in the news again for all the wrong reasons with the current
hoo-hah about Sky, Wiggins et al. Meanwhile more bike riders than ever are
complaining about the treatment they get from four wheeled vehicles when out
on the open road. Fitting then that theres a counterbalance to all the gloom in
the form of the hugely successful ETAPE LOCH NESS [1] taking place on 23 APR.
Now in its fourth year, the cycle sportive sold out in hours when entry was opened
with over 4,000 cycling fans from across the UK and beyond clamouring for a rare
opportunity to ride 66 miles of traffic-free roads around one of the worlds most
famous bodies of water, while raising lots of money for Macmillan Cancer Support
The fastest male rider across the finish line last year was James Davidson from
LSDW CC in a time of 2 hours 53 minutes and 37 seconds. The fastest female
cyclist for the second year in a row was Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
Team Scotland member Lee Craigie from Moray Firth CC in 2 hours 57 minutes
and 51 seconds. Impressive times and we imagine theyll both be back to hold
on to their crowns.
The event may be fully subscribed, but there are plenty of opportunities to cheer
on the riders, particularly at the Eden Court village where the whole thing starts
and finishes. There are food stalls, refreshments and, after the race a fine sense
of bonhomie as competitors rest their weary legs. Its a great event and, if the
BBC had any sense, would be televised live. Until that day comes however, get
along and be part of something truly inspiring.
Rather less inspiring have been the performances by our local SPFL football
teams. Neither ROSS COUNTY or ICT are likely to make the split, so April will be
spent fending off the very real possibility of relegation. Its hard to see Inverness
in particular coming back any time soon from going down, so if they survive, an
initiative has to be put in place to ensure that all the success of recent years
isnt thrown away. We might humbly suggest that BOTH teams could really do with
your supportsee if you can lend your voice to gee them along! Fixtures wont
be announced until nearer the time, so keep an eye on our website for details

Life, Death & Conspiracies
You cant beat a bit of an ice rink spectacular so, while such things are usually
associated with winter entertainment, well forgive CIRQUE DE GLACE [1] for
waiting until spring to bring their show to EDEN COURT. The admirably ambitious
affair, taking place from 1923 APR sees the internationally renowned Russian Ice
Stars bringing to life the story of the creation of our planet, mans evolution and a
journey to the limits of technology. All through the medium of ice dance, with music,
colour, incredible costumes and jaw-dropping acrobatics. Excellent.
More inventive dance from BALLETBOYZ [2] at EDEN COURT on 11 APR and,
like Cirque De Glace, theyre not afraid of addressing the big issues. The all-
male troupes show Life takes an elegant, powerful and provocative look at life
and death presented in the companys inimitable style, featuring two works by
internationally acclaimed choreographers; Rabbit by Pontus Lidberg and Fiction by
Javier de Frutos.
Some interesting female perspectives this month at Eden Court, most notably
HORSE MCDONALD on 02 APR. Best known as a singer, shes bringing her first
play CAREFUL to town, telling the tale of growing up gay in the 70s and how her
voice has saved her. Therell be a Q& A afterwards as well as a performance of
some of her best known songs.
SHAPPI KORSANDI [4], who comes to EDEN COURT on 04 APR, has long been one
of the most entertaining stand-ups and her new show, OH MY COUNTRY! Sees her
addressing notions of patriotism, the subtitle From Morris Dancing To Morrissey
hinting at the subject matter in her love letter to her adopted land.
More Gothic excellence in an adaptation of Susan Hills THE WOMAN IN BLACK [5]
at Eden Court from 0106 MAY. Well be elaborating on that one next month, but
you might want to snap up your tickets now.
As you also should for DONT SHOOT ME, IM STILL ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER at
EC on 02 MAY which finds the man dubbed the worlds funniest pianist displaying
both his phenomenal musical talent and his hilarious send-ups of the classical
genre. A natural successor to Victor Borge.
