SUBJECT: LIGHT IMAGE DENSITY OR TONER DUSTING

SYMPTOM:
Light image density or toner dusting occurs after replacing the PCU Assembly or the Development Units.

CAUSE:
When the PCU Assembly or just the Development Units are replaced, Service Programs 3010-1 through 4,
3011-1 through 4, 3012-1 through 4 and 3013-1 through 4 have not been updated.

SOLUTION:
Whenever the PCU Assembly or just the Development Units are being replaced, you must also enter the
Service Program data shown on the label attached to the Development Unit. (See example in photo below).
This procedure is also mentioned in the current field service manual under New PCU.

I IMPORTANT: If the following procedure is not performed when replacing the PCU Assembly or the
Development Units, light image density issues or toner dusting will be experienced.

In the photo above, the label [A] comes with the new PCU or Development Unit. It is used for your reference
and shows the data that needs to be entered into the SPs.

Example: The label in [A] above shows the TD Sensor Factory Data. Depending on what color Developer
Unit you are replacing, you would input the data for that color. The label shows SP3-01-*-001=8.17. If you
were to use this Developer Unit for Magenta, you would input this data (all 4 numbers from the label) into
SP3011-1 through 4. (See page 2.)

Service Notes:
When replacing the entire PCU or just the Developer Unit, you must follow the procedure in the
Field Service Manual under New PCU or Development Unit ( 3.4.5 New PCU or Development Unit
in the SM). The service manual explains in more detail as to which SPs must be entered and more
important, when in the process of replacement they should be input.
This data must also be input if the NVRAM has been cleared or replaced. The SP data for the
original Development Units can also be found on the factory data sheet that comes with every
machine.
Please refer to TSB D014/D015/D078/D079 074 LIGHT IMAGE DENSITY for other Light Image
Density causes.
Makes sure that all firmware is up to date.
A worn or dirty ITB will also cause low image density or toner dusting.
Music sensors should always be cleaned with alcohol not a dry rag. Using a dry rag creates static
and attracts toner dust.

Additional Information:
The following table is an SP Checklist that you should be aware of and follow before and after replacing
developer.

Service Program Checklist: Check Before & After Developer Replacement continued
SP# Description Target Value Note
This is the results of the latest performance of
SP3811-XXX (DevSetup Execute). "1111"
means successful. If the NV-RAM is cleared,
this value will be changed to the
"4444"(factory default). You cannot input this
value manually.

If you perform SP3811-XXX (DevSetup

Execute) again after the developer
replacement, it will be rewritten according to
the results. If SP3811-XXX (DevSetup
Execute) has been performed successful,
SP3812-001 Dev Setup Execute 1111
these values will be "1111".
NOTE: Never perform SP3811-XXX
(DevSetup Execute) with old developer!
SP3811-XXX (DevSetup Execute) should be
performed ONLY with brand new developer.

SP3812-001 does NOT show the results of

SP3801-XXX (Init TD Sensor). It means that
once SP3812-001 has been changed to
"4444", the value will not change even though
you performed SP3801-XXX (Init TD Sensor)
successful.
This SP shows the results of process control
self check. The process control self check is
performed during SP3801-XXX (Init TD
Sensor) or SP3811-XXX (DevSetup Execute).
SP3821 Pro Con OK? 10101010
"10101010" means successful. Other than
"10101010" means that there is a process
control self check error.

Check if any SCs concerning the developer

initialization or process control have occurred
before. If such an SC (for example SC418:
depends on
SP7403-001 SC History LED error during Vsg adjustment) has
condition
occurred before, you have to check the
relating parts (for example, ID sensor dirty for
the case of an SC418)
