Microcell Overview
A microcell is a cell in a mobile phone network served by a low
power cellular base station (tower), covering a limited area such
as a mall, a hotel, or a transportation hub

A microcell uses power control to limit the radius of its coverage

area

Microcells are usually used to add network capacity in areas with

very dense phone usage, such as train stations

Microcellular systems are typically used to provide low cost

mobile phone systems in high-density environments such as large
cities

Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 10

Deployment Criteria
Inadequate Coverage from Macro:
Existing macro solution on 2300MHz may not provide reliable indoor coverage
Deployed at street level to provide an outside-in approach to indoor coverage

High Capacity Needs / Targeted Hotspot:

Large number of localized users can be effectively offloaded to Outdoor Small Cells, thereby improving
efficiency of the network
Typical examples of this are Transport Hubs - train/bus station, airport, metro station exit

Site acquisition / Space constraints:

If sufficient room is not available to deploy conventional macro equipment, Outdoor Small Cells can be
deployed

Site deployment Challenges:

There may exist certain areas (e.g: Lutyens Delhi, D-Ward Mumbai) where it may be difficult to get the
necessary permission to deploy outdoor Macro Cells. Replacement of the DTA Macro Cells will fall in this
category

Rural Coverage:
Outdoor Small Cells may be an economically viable option for underserved rural areas
This is especially important to ensure that the rollout obligations are met in the rural areas

Time-to-market:
Faster to deploy than regular macro sites

Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 11

Planning Criteria
Link Budget
Link budget structure is similar as macro sites.
Additional effort needed to ensure same DL and UL best servers, especially at cell-edge with
neighboring macro.

Antenna Height
Considering deployment constraints and smaller footprint, lower-than-clutter height is
recommended

Propagation Model
Recommend to use ray-tracing or Outdoor Small Cell model with higher-granularity clutter,
terrain & building heights

Optimization Requirements
Unless unavoidable, only first tier macro neighbor addition recommended
Network Parameters to be optimally set to ensure smooth transition between Macro Sites &
Small Cells
Additional macro optimization may be needed, especially in interference-limited scenarios
Tracking Area Code should be same as Macro Network

Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 12

Design Philosophy
RJIL currently has two spectrum bands of operation
Band 40 20 MHz of LTE TDD spectrum &
Band 3 5 MHz of LTE FDD spectrum
Band 3 offers superior coverage but Band 40 offers significantly higher DL capacity.

The overall objective of the outdoor network (which will consist of

both Macro eNBs and Outdoor Small Cells) is to ensure that the service
offerings for the following services are met:
A minimum Downlink Throughput of 2Mbps shall be met for Best Effort services
A minimum Uplink Throughput of 256kbps shall be met for Best Effort services
VoLTE services shall be comparable, both in quality as well as the depth of coverage, to existing
voice services offered by other service providers
eMBMS services shall be offered at 5Mbps
It shall also be ensured that the connection success rate shall be greater than 98%, across all
services

Maximum Allowable Path Loss (MAPL) Vs. Distance

For all deployments, we can estimate the cell range based on the limiting service and link on both
uplink and downlink.
Based on the MAPL, the distance covered for an Urban Morphology will be typically 100m for the 5W
Outdoor Small Cell.

Micro eNB Antenna
The Outdoor Micro eNB comes with an Integrated antenna system
which supports 2T2R
In order to increase the coverage ,we can use external high gain
antenna
In such cases ,we need to remove the inbuilt Antenna and connect the
Micro eNB with an external 2-port antenna system using two RF
jumpers
Solpar has to remove the Inbuilt antenna in the Warehouse and use
separate external Antenna at the site for Microcell Installation
After removal of low gain Antenna associated with Micro Cell in
warehouse, packing tape MUST BE used to seal/cover N type

Deployment Scenarios - 1

Rooftop (DTA - Difficult to Acquire sites)

Outdoor Small Cells are a good alternative to DTA Macro sites. They can be camouflaged
on the buildings and can also be used to cover the critical and important traffic junctions
and high traffic zones.
Typical Outdoor Small Cell deployment scenario is shown below on building terrace.
Smaller poles with 2 meters will be good enough. The rack can be installed either on
terrace or ground as agreed between RJIL & Housing Society.

Billboards/Hoardings and Hotspots

RJIL will install Outdoor Small Cell solution on hoardings to cover the hotspot areas like
highways within city limits, busy traffic junctions etc. This will ensure seamless voice &
data connectivity during peak traffic and mobility.
Bill Boards and Hoardings are the best option to provide coverage in important areas of
cities. These Hoardings are available in heart of city areas, near railway stations, main
traffic junctions and main roads. By installing Outdoor Small Cells on hoardings, nearby
buildings can also be targeted to provide coverage

Samsung Electronics. All Rights Reserved. Confidential and Proprietary. 136

Deployment Scenarios - 2

Flyovers & Sky Walks

RJIL will install Outdoor Small Cell solution on Flyovers to cover the areas like highways, busy
traffic roads, traffic junctions.
Outdoor Small Cells located on theses location can also be used to provide coverage to the
nearby dense urban areas, high traffic zones and poor coverage areas. Also areas which do
not have suitable sites in the vicinity can also be targeted for providing coverage.

Electricity / Utility Poles

A typical Outdoor Small Cell deployment scenario is as shown on electricity poles. The
proposed solution will be installed on the top of pole, below any lamp installation. This
meets the coverage requirement and the radiation compliance guidelines.
Depending on the site specific conditions, installation will be carried between 6 to 8 meters
depending on pole-specific conditions. Based on the coverage requirements number of
poles can be selected.
E.g: Lutyens Delhi, D-Ward Mumbai.

Camouflaged Installation

Camouflage Products

Site Camouflage products are intended to serve as an architectural camouflage for

Micro Cell equipment's that is not appealing to the general public or which may be
required by the local and regulatory agencies
While the RF transparent materials and construction serves the telecom wireless
industry, there are many other areas where concealment is effective
These non-metallic materials are not subject to corrosion, therefore provide years
of maintenance free service

RF Transparency and Quality of Construction

RF Transparent materials for a virtually unaffected signal to pass from the RF

transmitter out to its intended broadcast area
Transparent materials used are light weight, durable, and strong
FRP construction utilizes fire retardant resin with the addition of a UV absorber
and/or protective exterior polyurethane paint
