Section B [15 marks]

16. Phosphorus(V) chloride, PCl5 is a white solid which sublimes at 160C.

When gaseous PCl5 is heated in a closed container, the following equilibrium is established.
PCl5 (g) PCl3 (g) + Cl2 (g)

(a) Write an expression for Kc for this equilibrium, stating the units.

[2]

(b) Phosphorus(V) chlorides dissolves in some polar solvents without reaction and such
solution conduct electricity. This is due to the presence of the two ions [PCl 4]+ and [PCl6]-.
Draw the structures and suggest the shape of each of these ions.
(i) [PCl4]+ ion (ii) [PCl6]- ion

[4]

(c) In an experiment, 1.00 mol of PCl5 vapour was heated in a closed 5.00 dm3 flask at

left in the equilibrium mixture.
Given concentration equilibrium constant at this temperature is 0.105 mol dm -3.
