Section A [15 marks]
1 Which one of the following does not contain either an unpaired s electron or an unpaired p
electron?
A Cr B Ge C S- D Sc
2 The graph shows the first thirteen ionisation energies for element X.
A Each hydrogen bond formed between water molecules is stronger than that formed between
HF molecules.
B There are more atoms in a water molecule than there are in an HF molecule, so van der Waals
forces are stronger in water.
C There are on average, more hydrogen bonds between water molecules than there are between
HF molecules.
D The water molecule has a greater permanent dipole than HF molecule.
CH3COCOOH
Pyruvic acid
Which graph best represents the change in pH that occurs when a sample of pyruvic acid is
titrated with NaOH (aq)?
7 A 1 dm3 solution was made by mixing 0.0040 mol of HCl(aq) and 0.0025mol of NaOH(aq). What
was the pH of the resulting solution?
A. 1 only correct B. 1 and 2 are correct C. 2 and 3 are correct D. All 1, 2 and 3 are correct
9 Which of the following deductions can be made from the Gas Laws as summarised in the ideal gas
equation PV = nRT (where each symbol has its usual meaning)?
1 One moel of any ideal gas occupied the same volume under the same conditions of
temperature and pressure.
2 The density of an ideal gas at constant pressure is inversely proportional to the
temperature.
3 The volume of a given mass of an ideal gas is doubled if its temperature is raised from
25C to 50C at constant pressure.
A. 1 only correct B. 1 and 2 are correct C. 2 and 3 are correct D. All 1, 2 and 3 are correct
10 Which graph shows the behavior of a fixed mass of an ideal gas at constant pressure?
11 A graph of PV against P is plotted for an ideal gas and a non-ideal gas. Which gas would show the
greatest deviation from ideality?
12 Copper and iodine are both shiny crystalline solids. The crystal structures of copper and iodine are
both face-centred cubic. The diagram shows the arrangement of the particles in this type of
crystal lattice.
Copper Iodine
A Atoms Molecules
B Atoms Atoms
C Cations Atoms

(a) Write an expression for Kc for this equilibrium, stating the units.
[2]
(b) Phosphorus(V) chlorides dissolves in some polar solvents without reaction and such
solution conduct electricity. This is due to the presence of the two ions [PCl 4]+ and [PCl6]-.
Draw the structures and suggest the shape of each of these ions.
(i) [PCl4]+ ion (ii) [PCl6]- ion
[4]
(c) In an experiment, 1.00 mol of PCl5 vapour was heated in a closed 5.00 dm3 flask at
500 K until equilibrium had been established. Calculate the number of mole of PCl 5
left in the equilibrium mixture.
Given concentration equilibrium constant at this temperature is 0.105 mol dm -3.

17. 5
A vessel contains 16.0 g of oxygen at 27.0C at a pressure of 5.00 x 10 Pa.
(a) What is the volume of the vessel?
(b) What will be the final pressure when 2.00 mol of hydrogen is added at 27.0C without
changing the volume of the system?
(c) If the mixture is now exploded and allowed to cool to 27.0C, what will be the pressure of
the gas in the vessel?

Section C [30 marks]
(b) Pure nitric(V) acid is a colourless liquid which forms an azeotropic mixture with water.
Aqueous nitric(V) acid shows a negative deviation from Raoults law.
(i) Explain why aqueous nitric(V) acid shows a negative deviation. [2 marks]
(ii) Sketch a boiling point-composition diagram for aqueous nitric(V) acid given nitric(V) acid
boils at 78.2C and an azeotrope mixture containing 68.2% of nitric(V) acid by mass boils
at 121C and 101kPa. [3 marks]
(iii)State the changes occurs in the composition of the residual liquid and the distillate
when a solution containing 80.0 % of nitric(V) acid is continuously distilled. [3 marks]
19 (a) State four factors that affect the rate of a reaction. [4 marks]
(b) Gaseous SO2Cl2 decomposes when heated to form SO2 and Cl2.
SO2Cl2 (g) SO2(g) + Cl2(g)
The decomposition is a first order reaction. When 0.10 mol SO 2Cl2 is heated at 300C in a
1.0 dm3 flask, the following data were obtained:
20 (a) (i) What do you understand by the term buffer solution. [2 marks]
