Solved Problems

1. If p - q = 6 and p2 + q2 = 116, what is the value of pq?

Answer : 40
Explanation :
Use this formula ( a - b )2 = a2 - 2ab + b2
( p - q )2 = p2 - 2pq + q2
( p - q )2 = ( p2 + q2) - 2pq
62 = 116 - 2pq
36 = 116 - 2pq

1
2pq = 116 - 36
2pq = 80
pq = 80 / 2
pq = 40

2. (17)3.5 x (17)? = 178

Answer : 4.5
Explanation :
Let (17)3.5 x (17)x = 178.
Then, (17)3.5 + x = 178.
3.5 + x = 8
x = (8 - 3.5)
x = 4.5

3. Given that 100.48 = x, 100.70 = y and xz = y2, then the value of z is close to:
Answer : 2.9
Explanation :
xz = y2 10(0.48z) = 10(2 x 0.70) = 101.40
0.48z = 1.40
z = 140/48 = 35/12 = 2.9 (approx.)

4. If m and n are whole numbers such that mn = 169, then the value of (m 1)n + 1 is:

6. Solve for m if 49(7m) = 3433m + 6

Answer : -2
Explanation :
49(7m) = 3433m + 6
727m (73)3m + 6
72 + m = 79m + 18
Equating powers of 7 on both sides,
m + 2 = 9m + 18
-16 = 8m
m = -2.

7. If a and b are positive numbers, 2a = b3 and ba = 8, find the value of a and b.

Answer : 3 and 2
Explanation :
2a = b3 .(1)
ba = 8 ..(2)

2
cubing both sides of equation (2), (ba)3 = 83
b3a = (b3)a = 512.
from (1), (2a)a = (23)3.
comparing both sides, a = 3
substituting a in (1), b = 2

37. Find the value of n, when 3-7 32n + 3 = 311 35
Answer : 5
Explanation :
32n + 3 = 311 35/3-7
32n + 3 = 311 - 5/3-7
32n + 3 = 36/3-7
32n + 3 = 36 - (-7)
32n + 3 = 36 + 7
32n + 3 = 313
Since the bases are same and equating the powers, we get 2n + 3 = 13
2n = 13 3

47. Find 12 48
Answer : 24

10
Explanation :
12 = (4 3) = 2 3, and
48 = 16 3 = 43, so,
12 48 = 2 3 43 = 8 (3)2 = 8 3 =24
Or more easily,
12 48 = 12 (12 4) = 12 12 4 = 12 2 = 24

48. Which is greater: 34 or 47?

Answer : 47 > 34
Explanation :
First of all, 34 = 41/3 , and 47 = 71/4
Now, convert both surds into same order as below:
Raise each surd to power 12, which is L.C.M. of 3 and 4, the order of the two surds.
41/3 = (41/3)12 = 44 = 256, and
71/4 = (71/4)12 = 73 = 343
Since 343 > 256, so 47 > 34

49. Arrange the following surds in ascending order: 39, 411 and 617
Answer : 91/3 > 111/4 > 171/6
Explanation :
Given, 39, 411 and 617
The surds are of order 3, 4 and 6 respectively.
Find L.C.M. of 3, 4 and 6, which is 12.
Now, raise each surd to power 12.
(91/3)12 = 912/3 = 94 = 6561,
(111/4 )12 = 1112/4 = 113 = 1331
(171/6)12 = 1712/6 = 172 = 289
Clearly we see that 91/3 > 111/4 > 171/6
