ESSAY QUESTIONS:
HOW TO ANSWER
THEM RIGHT

An Accepted Admissions Guide

2016 Accepted
www.accepted.com
Introduction

The best way to ace your EMBA application essays is to ANSWER THE ESSAY
QUESTIONS. This may sound like an easy feat, yet so often applicants go into the essay
writing process with ulterior motives: to write their preconceived essays based only
loosely on the given essay topics.

Newsflash: No matter how compelling and well-written your essays are, if they dont
answer the questions as they are presented to you on the application, they will not
impress the admissions committee or at least not in the way you want them to.

In this admissions guide you will receive the guidance you need to a) understand exactly
what each essay question is asking, and to b) answer the question in the most compelling
and impressive fashion.

To make the most of this guide, keep the following in mind:

These questions were originally used in the 2015-2016 EMBA application cycle.
Whenever you read this, dont assume they are unchanged. Check the schools
websites for the current version.

Each school asks different questions; therefore, each essay you draft should be
unique to each essay question and to each program. While it may be tempting to
use the same essay for a few different applications, adcoms can usually tell the
difference between a recycled essay and an essay that was written specifically to
answer their question and they certainly prefer the latter.

In our analyses below, youll find valuable tips on what to include in your
answers, as well as advice on what you should avoid at all costs. Dont stop
reading after the dos; the donts can be just as valuable, if not more so.

Since fit is so crucial to each of these schools, be sure to research each

program you apply to and to envision yourself at that particular school on its
campus, in its classrooms, interacting with its professors, etc. while drafting
your essay. If you want the adcoms to believe you will be an irreplaceable fixture
in their next class, then youll have to convince them that your ideals and goals
are one with theirs.

Enjoy the guide and learn how to answer those essay questions directly and effectively!

Chicago Booth

Chicago Booth EMBA has streamlined its questions

this year, giving you one essay with ample space to
make your case holistically. This change indicates
that they are looking for people who can organize
their thoughts, build a credible and compelling case
for their candidacy, and maintain an extended yet
focused discussion. The Booth EMBA adcom clearly
puts value on verbal expression and expects senior
level managers to have mastered this skill. Give
yourself time to develop and refine your essay
accordingly.

Essays:

1. Why are you seeking an MBA from Chicago Booth and what unique knowledge and
experiences do you hope to contribute to the program? (maximum 2 pages, 12 pt. Times
New Roman)

The question zeroes in on the elements directly relevant to the adcom, but allows you to
elaborate within those parameters. Considering the pivotal role the one required essay
plays in your application, the key challenge is making good decisions about the
following four elements:

Within the overall space allowance, how much space should you allocate to each part
of the question? It will vary person to person. For example, a person who has her own
company will require some backstory for context setting before discussing future
plans, so she would allocate more space to goals than someone who is rising up the
ladder at McKinsey. Someone with atypical goals (such as my client who successfully
applied to a different top EMBA program) will need to spend more time clarifying why he
wants the Booth MBA than a more conventional applicant. Analyze your own case and
block out the essay accordingly.

You have to discuss your professional goals in order to explain why you are seeking
an MBA from Chicago Booth, but how to present them? Since EMBA programs are
part-time, an ideal place to start is your current work: what do you want to achieve and
how do you want to grow during the years in the program? (This has the added benefit
of giving the adcom a view of what youll bring to the table based on this work.) From
there, move on to your goals for the 5-year period following graduation give the most
detail here; make it really concrete. Then sketch your longer-term career vision/plans,
necessarily less detailed. Finally, explain how each of these career/goals phases require
skills, knowledge, and perhaps relationships derived through the Booth EMBA.

2016 6 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

How should you structure this relatively long, complex essay? Simply and
straightforwardly is usually best. Start with your current/immediate goals. (If you need
to provide some backstory for context, as noted above, do so as succinctly as possible.)
Then progress through your goals. Next, discuss why you need the Booth EMBA now,
connecting your reasons to the previously stated goals. Finally, present your
contributions.

What unique knowledge and experiences should you talk about? Select two to four,
and for at least two, give concrete examples. For all, discuss relevant insights after all,
thats what youre really bringing, not the fact of having done something. To select the
best, consider what aspects of your experience would be interesting and/or useful to the
Booth EMBA cohort and give them fresh insight or perspective. It could be related to
industry, function, geographic/global experience, a formative personal experience, a
particularly meaningful extracurricular (community or other non-work) involvement, etc.
Choose points that expand the readers understanding of you, things they wont
necessarily glean from your resume, AND that have relevance to them.

2. OPTIONAL: If there is anything else you would like the Admissions Committee to
know about you, please share that information here. (maximum 2 pages, 12 pt. Times New
Roman)

This question invites you to present new material that will enhance your application, as
well as to explain anything that needs explaining (e.g., gap in employment, choice of
recommender if not using a direct supervisor, etc.). As far as enhancement points, there
should be a clear value to the information youre sharing and it should not be content
that more appropriately belongs in the main essay (contributions of unique knowledge
and experiences).

3. REAPPLICANTS ONLY: Please give us an update on your professional, academic,

and community activities since your previous application and highlight what you have
done to strengthen your application. (maximum one page, single spaced, 12pt. Times New
Roman)

Whatever developments you discuss, for each, describe the situation/experience

concretely and clarify the impact you had. Also clarify how it demonstrates growth (i.e.
not just another achievement), and why it makes you a stronger candidate.

Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

Columbia Business School

These essay questions focus mostly on the present and

future, so dont expect to richly portray your personal
and/or professional development. Go with the flow
and give them what they ask for, in aggregate: a vivid
sense of engagement; real, focused career plans; self-
knowledge and knowledge of the program.
Considering the lack of opportunity to discuss past
achievements and relevant experience, your resume
carries all the more weight in the Columbia EMBA
application attend to it accordingly.

Short Answer Question: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50
characters maximum)

A factual phrase or bullet will suffice; dont worry about responding with a whole
sentence.

Essays:

1. Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your

professional path to date. What are your career goals going forward, and how will the
Columbia MBA help you achieve them? (Maximum 500 words)

You may want to start by discussing your current career situation to set the context, and
clarify how the MBA education will enable you to achieve your immediate goals. You can
then naturally move on to your future goals sequentially. Give more detail in the roles
you plan immediately post-MBA and the several years following; this time frame should
comprise the bulk of your goals discussion. Longer-term goals need less detail, but they
still should present a clear direction. In describing your goals at any given point, indicate
why you are taking that step.

In discussing how the program will benefit you, be specific: identify what skills and
knowledge you need, and how the program meets those needs. Refer to specific aspects of
the curriculum, structure and/or special features of the program, detailing how they will
support you and your goals.

2. Columbia Business School's Executive MBA will challenge you by offering a rigorous
academic experience, global exposure through the international seminar, and the
opportunity to immediately apply what you learn to your career. How will you approach
balancing the demands of the program with your professional and personal life while you
are in school? (Maximum 250 words)

2016 8 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

Discuss the accommodations you will make at work, such as delegating more, adjusting
travel schedules, etc. You dont have to tell them every single thing you can think of
focus on the most significant two or three adjustments.

Also address your personal responsibilities and how you will meet them with this
additional demand on your time and energy; even acknowledging that youll have less
time at the playground with your toddler or mentioning the support of your significant
other will show that youre facing this issue squarely. If youve already successfully
balanced school and working full time, by all means mention it.

3. CBS Matters, a key element of the Schools culture, allows the people in your Cluster
to learn more about you on a personal level. What will your Clustermates be pleasantly
surprised to learn about you? (Maximum 250 words)

The key to answering this short essay effectively is to understand the phrase pleasantly
surprised. Lets break it down:

1. First, dont repeat a resume point surprised means something not obvious from
the available information.

2. Pleasantly means something that will generate positive interest. It doesnt have to
be directly applicable or useful to your clustermates.

It can be something from work or outside work. If its far in the past, it should be
something of continuing relevance. DONT present a boring explanation. DO root your
response in actual experience.

Most important: DO select a topic that will add something to your profile, something that
lets the adcom know you better as a person.

If your answer puts a smile on the readers face, or even better elicits a happy, surprised
laugh, high five!

Optional Essay. An optional fourth essay will allow you to discuss any issues that do not
fall within the purview of the required essays.

This question invites you to present new material that will enhance your application, as
well as to explain anything that needs explaining (e.g., gap in employment, choice of
recommender if not using a direct supervisor, etc.). As far as non-necessary points, since
you are making the adcom read more than is required, there should be a clear value to
the information youre sharing. Finally, keep it short.

Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

Cornell Johnson

The Cornell Executive MBA Program has three required

essay questions and one optional question in its application.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is brevity.

While no one is going to be counting individual words, the
short word count guideline is a clear indicator that you
should work on clarity of thought with all of your
answers. Cornell interviews every applicant to its program, so
if you are concerned that the essay format doesnt give you
space for your answers, rest assured you will have the
opportunity to discuss them further in the interview.

Question 1: In a concise statement, tell us why you are

seeking an MBA. Specifically, what are your short and long-term career goals? And how
will an MBA earned through an Executive MBA program at Cornell University help you
achieve your goals? (400 words max)

You first want to identify why you feel you need an MBA, linking your past/current career
experience with your short and long term goals and what about an MBA degree will
allow you to achieve them. Then you need to relay Why Cornell? and Why EMBA?
For the former, be convincing about the reasons Cornell is the best choice for you, and
show you have done your homework location and reputation wont cut it. The
admissions committee wants to know what you anticipate the program will be like, what
you will get out of it, how the program fits with your career vision, and what the entire
experience means to you as a person. For the latter, by making the choice to apply to an
Executive MBA program, you are of course signaling you will keep your job while going
to school. Indicate why that format is the best fit.

Question 2: Briefly describe your leadership style. Include two examples of situations
that helped you develop your style. One example should be a positive situation that
helped to shape or reaffirm it. The other example should be of a situation with an
unsuccessful outcome that led you to change or redefine that style. (400 words max)

This essay wants you to showcase that you are a thoughtful leader who can build upon
strengths and also learn from mistakes. The examples you use dont need to be high
impact (though they certainly can be if they are relevant), but rather ones where there
were clear takeaways from the experiences that you implemented moving forward. This
essay encourages you to show humility, arguably an important characteristic for a
successful leader, so dont shy away from the opportunity to show that with the
unsuccessful situation.

Question 3: Cornell Executive MBA students are expected to be supportive and effective
members of a learning team. Describe your philosophy regarding teamwork.
Specifically, how do you define success in a team? (250 words max)

The Cornell EMBA program values team players. Throughout the program students are
placed in rotating teams, with the goal of supporting each other with the coursework as
well as developing and completing group projects. They want individuals who are
willing, ready and able to collaborate with the rest of their cohort. Discuss how your
philosophy and definition of team success fit with that model.

Optional Essay: What else would you like us to know? Please use this statement to
address potential concerns such as gaps in employment or prior academic difficulties.
You can also use this statement to highlight any achievements or significant life events
that are not included elsewhere in the application. (250 words max)

If there are flaws in your application, they will be noticed. Its much easier to address
them upfront than in an interview situation. Be as honest as you can possibly be. Keep in
mind the admissions committee members are human, too, and they have flaws as well! If
you opt to share additional accomplishments, make sure they truly do add to your
application and the type of student you will be, so that the additional information comes
across as pertinent information rather than just bragging.

The Class of 2018 application is open and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

For the Executive MBA Americas, priority will be given to applications received before
May 6, 2016.

For the Executive MBA Metro New York, priority will be given to applications
received before June 10, 2016.

Applications will be accepted after these dates only if space is available.

We encourage all applicants to apply early to ensure a seat in the class and to allow
ample time to prepare for the start of the program.

Global

The Global EMBA has 2 program

options: EMBA-Global Americas &
Europe which combines the strengths
of Columbia University and London
Business School; and EMBA-Global Asia,
with Columbia University, London
Business School, and Hong Kong
University Business School.

Of course all MBA and EMBA applications are about fit. The Global EMBA is too
just more so. This adcom really focuses on fit, because the program is so unique and
intense. And the concept of global leader is a critical part of that fit. How its
embodied will be unique to each applicant; ensure that your essays reflect your own
mindset and vision of global leadership.

The adcom also looks for applicants who truly understand and will make productive use
of this distinctive educational opportunity, which comprises multiple campuses and
schools each with its own particular focus, opportunities, and areas of excellence.

The three essay questions vary in approach, thus requiring you to present yourself
effectively from different angles. Theres a fairly classic goals essay, a story
(behavioral) essay, and an open statement. The challenge is to employ a consistent
individual voice while also adapting it to the various essay types.

EMBA GLOBAL ESSAY QUESTIONS

Essay 1

Why do you wish to participate in the EMBA-Global programme? What do you hope to
experience and how will participation in this programme help you to achieve your
objectives? (Maximum 500 words)

Heres that goals question. First a note about the nuance of the question: notice the
words wish, hope, experience, and participate/participation. These words imply an
immersive, personal, community, collaborative orientation. In the essay (and indeed
throughout the application) show how you fit with this holistic approach.

Structure: Ive found that its intuitive and logical to start the essay by discussing your
goals the objectives at the very end of the question. (And add a word about what
motivates them.) You will then naturally move into what you hope to experience from the
program, because your professional goals create your learning needs. This part can
(indeed should) include a personal component as well. To address participation, discuss

2016 12 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

elements beyond the classroom where you will learn and contribute, such as clubs, social
interactions, etc.

Essay 2

Please describe a situation either work or personal where you faced a particular
challenge. What was the outcome and what did you learn from the experience about your
own strengths and personal development needs? (Maximum 500 words)

This is the story. I suggest selecting a topic thats relatively recent. Make it a situation
with some significant stakes, and one that yielded meaningful insight, growth, and
change.

Structure: Jump right into the story. Avoid preambles that give away the ending! This
straightforward approach grips the reader and frees up space for detail and narrative,
which is the way to grip the reader. As you walk through what happened, highlight your
actions and add in snippets of what you were thinking (and even feeling). Conclude with
a paragraph reflecting on what you learned about your strengths and development needs.

Personal statement

Please tell us about yourself and your background. How do you embody the
characteristics of a future global leader? The objective of this statement is to get a sense
of who you are, rather than what you have achieved professionally. (Maximum 500
words)

First, think. Selecting content is not so easy when faced with an open question such as
this. There is no one formula that will work for everyone. Some people might best focus
on aspects of their cultural milieu and its formative influence on their values and
perspective. Others might focus on pivotal experiences during university, others yet on
influential role model(s) or relationships. Many people will appropriately discuss more
than one of these things.

The adcom knows that the term global leader is abstract and that it will be manifested
uniquely in each real global leader. So rather than trying to fit your experiences to
the concept of global leader, work from the other direction: start with your experiences
and background and elucidate how they will help make you a unique, individual global
leader.

Last but not least, you need to know what global leader means to you and what kind of
global leader you aspire to be. You cant just use the phrase without defining it for the
adcom. You have to create the picture.

IMD

The IMD EMBA essay questions will generate a

comprehensive view of you as a businessperson and
a professional in very succinct form. Although the
essays are not long, be prepared to put good thought
into deciding what to write. Also spend time deciding
what to emphasize about a given experience or
point, because you will not be able to include all
aspects given the brevity. Keep in mind the
programs targeting of seasoned managers on the
brink of senior management.

Rather than in a traditional set of essay questions, the IMD application asks you a couple
of critical questions within the application.

5. Description of career history

Please provide a brief description of your career history and accomplishments to date,
including current duties and reporting responsibilities. (The response must be limited to
11 lines.)

This line limit gives you about 130-150 words not much. You can either weave in
your accomplishments (selectively discussing the key ones) into your career history, or
you can do a short paragraph with your career history followed by a short paragraph
about your key accomplishments. Regarding the accomplishments, include at least one
recent one. In this short essay, be specific and quantify where possible/relevant.

9. Briefly state your career objectives. (The response must be limited to 10 lines.)

This prompt gives you just a few sentences. Be specific: roles/positions, industry, possibly
geography. Give an example of companies that interest you. State not just what you want
to do, but also what youd like to accomplish, what impact youd like to have in the long
term (your vision).

10-13. Essays

Questions 10-13 should be answered on separate sheets of paper. Please re-type the
questions with your answers and include your name on each page. Please take this
opportunity to present yourself to the Admissions Committee in a concise, informative
and open manner. Each essay should be a maximum of 15 lines which is about 200 words
per essay.

2016 14 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

10. Please describe three situations, business or otherwise, in which you were involved
and which were of importance to you. Explain why you view them as such.

Selecting three interesting, different, and in some way pivotal situations is the key to
using this essay to maximum effect. It gives the adcom YOUR lens onto your life and
career and it gives you a chance to present a multifaceted self-portrait. Ideally at least
one of the three situations will be non-work related. A general rule of thumb in terms of
time frame is, the longer ago something happened, the bigger its meaning and impact
should be to make it a viable essay topic. For example, you should generally steer clear
of discussing something as far back as high school unless, for example, you escaped
with your family from a region at war. Most likely youll discuss things within the last
five years. For the work-related items, try to have one fairly recent, and also discuss
experiences that are different. I suggest three paragraphs, each devoted to one situation.
In each, describe the situation, and then discuss why it was important to you and if it
was so for multiple reasons, focus on one or two. Be thoughtful and insightful, dont just
state the obvious.

11. Please comment on a situation where you failed to reach an objective and what you
learned from it.

Here you have a chance to go more in depth on a particular experience. Ideally use an
experience from work, not too far in the past. First narrate the situation, giving specifics
such as where, who, when, etc. Dont shrink from the part where you failed to reach the
objective this is the pivot point of the story. Explain what happened and be frank about
where you fell short. Describe your learning from it and then add a quick sentence
noting how you have since applied that learning.

12. In what ways do you believe you can contribute to the IMD Executive MBA
program?

Identify 2-3 key ways you stand out among IMD Executive MBA applicants and elaborate
on how they will enable you to contribute. There is no formula here; it will differ for each
applicant. Some examples of factors to consider are a unique industry perspective or
niche, an unusual or powerful experience at work, in-depth experience in under-
represented developing region, work that deals with critical or evolving social issues,
significant and high-impact volunteer work. These are just examples. For the top 2-3
factors you mention, describe each briefly and now how/why it will enable you to
contribute. After this substantive discussion, if you wish and if you have room, you can
add a couple more points in a concluding sentence or two but there is no need to do so.

13. (Optional) Is there any additional information that is critical for the Executive MBA
Admissions Committee to know that has not been covered elsewhere in this application?

The use of the phrase is critical indicates that you should not use this essay simply to
further market yourself; write it only if there is an essential item not mentioned that the

2016 15 www.accepted.com

adcom must know in order to have a full understanding of your candidacy. Obviously
youd need to discuss things such as an unimpressive undergrad record, gap in resume,
etc. But given the opportunity to discuss a range of issues that the regular essays
present, you should not add another interesting experience here.

"Applications are reviewed, and acceptance decisions made, as the application are
received. This means that the class can fill up some months in advance of the date it
actually starts. We strongly recommend that you apply early."

Kellogg

The Kellogg Executive MBA questions are among the

most comprehensive, thorough, and numerous of any
EMBA application. It takes significant effort to put
together a strong set of Kellogg EMBA essays, and
that fact weeds out potential students who are not
seriously interested in this competitive program.
Moreover, the questions encompass almost every
basic type: goals, behavioral (the experience and
your reflection on it), evaluative (greatest skills and
talents). It offers more than one optional essay. This set of essays requires the writer to
wear different hats and excel at different types of self-analysis. Not least, the messages
and contents of the essays should be coordinated to strategically and holistically create a
picture of you that is vivid, distinguishing, and multifaceted without being contradictory
or jumbled. Note that there are no word limits, therefore use your judgment; dont write
all 1,000 word essays. Depending on the question and what you have to say, 400-750 is a
good range to target.

ESSAYS:

JOB DESCRIPTION: Describe the unit for which you are responsible and relate it to
the total organization in terms of size, scope, and autonomy of responsibility. What
human resources, budget, and capital investment are you responsible for? Please describe
your position.

A straightforward question it contains several components, so be sure to answer all of

them. Try to work in an anecdote or two somewhere, for example, if part of your role is to
troubleshoot issues with global clients, give a brief example.

1. Why have you elected to apply to the Kellogg School Executive MBA Program?

This essay should discuss your interest in the Kellogg program as a means to acquire the
learning you seek in light of your goals. Clarify why you are pursuing the executive
program specifically. You can also discuss other benefits that relate to personal
preferences such as environment and the programs schedule, structure, and location. Be
specific and add thoughtful discussion, dont just reiterate points from the website. If
possible, cite conversations with students or alumni, including relevant insights youve
gained from them.

2. What are your goals and objectives and how will a Kellogg Executive MBA help you
achieve these? Please feel free to discuss both personal and professional goals.

2016 17 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

Discuss your goals in specific terms: industry, likely positions, which company or
companies, possibly where, what you expect to do, possibly challenges you anticipate.
Also discuss what you want to accomplish short- and long-term. To make the essay truly
compelling, also show how your goals are rooted in your experience, what motivates
your goals, and your vision for your goals. Finally, discuss the learning needs these
goals engender and summarize how the Kellogg MBA meets them, saving the greater
detail for essay 1.

3. Discuss a professional situation that did not end successfully. Why did you or your
peers consider the situation to have negative results? How did you resolve the situation?
Did it change your management style? If so, how?

In selecting the story to discuss, use something relatively recent (even though
unsuccessful, it can still show you at work in an engaging context and at a decision
making level with high accountability), and something substantive. Be frank about your
role as it may have contributed to the lack of success. For structure, keep it simple: first
tell the story, and then address the remaining questions. The last part, about how it may
have changed your management style, is a good opportunity to show youve not only
learned from the experience but applied the learning, by briefly citing a specific example
of your improved management style.

4. What do you consider to be your greatest skills and talents? How will you use these to
contribute to an Executive MBA class as well as to a study group?

First, what not to do: strain to find some unique skill or talent that no one else possesses
in an effort to differentiate yourself. It doesnt exist. Rather, look inward whether its
creativity, initiative, leadership, strategic thinking, interpersonal astuteness, analytic
capability, mentoring/coaching its the details and stories of how you manifest this
quality that will make this essay exciting while strategically supporting and enhancing
the other essays. Select 2-3 skills/talents that differ from each other (i.e., dont do quant
skills and analytic skills, or communication skills and interpersonal skills) and tell a
quick story or anecdote illustrating each. Finally, for each, comment on how it will help
you contribute by giving an example these comments can be short, as they story itself
will really convey how the skill or talent will let you contribute.

5. Optional: Describe how your relevant global experiences have influenced you
professionally.

This is a great essay for most people to answer if youve had any global experience, it
can only have influenced you professionally. If youve had a lot of global experiences,
dont just do a survey of them and dont feel you must write about all of them. Select the
most meaningful experiences and tell the stories, and then explaining the influence on
you.

6. Optional: Is there anything else that you would like to add to help us in evaluating
your candidacy?

This question invites you to present new material that you think will enhance your
application, as well as to explain anything that needs explaining (e.g., gap in
employment). As far as non-necessary points, keep in mind that if you are making the
adcom read more, there should be a clear value to the information. Finally, considering
the many essays, keep it short.

7. Optional: Describe any major reports, instructional materials, or manuals that you
have prepared or any research, inventions, or other creative work.

Note, major. Do not wrack your brain for every report or training material youve
contributed to. If you have numerous patents, ditto. Focus on the most important ones of
whatever type of material you are describing. A nice format is an annotated bullet list.

8. Optional: Please list the business/professional/community organizations in which you

are active.

Note are active. Not were active.

Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

London Business School

In the LBS EMBA website landing page, a short

introduction to the program includes the words
transform, transition, and catalyst. Also,
accelerate and propel. This is a clear
message from the adcom: the program goes
beyond conveying necessary skills for senior
managers; it is for people who have a dynamic
sense of their future and a willingness to change
and grow, as well as to study and learn. Your
essays should mirror and convey this dynamic sense, this energy, this vigor.

Question 1: How has the scope of your management experience affected your career
objectives? (500 word max)

This is a goals question, albeit rather indirect. And the question itself reflects the
dynamic perspective: rather than what your career goals are, it asks you to present
them as a part of an ongoing process.

Its an essay for which the most work might come before you write it in the preliminary
thinking process. Make it an exercise: FIRST, define your career objectives (short and
longer term). SECOND, identify what factors influenced the development of those
objectives. THIRD, of those factors, single out those related (directly and/or indirectly)
to your management experience. Now, youve got the raw material for your essay.

In the actual essay, you could start with career objectives and work back to portray the
related management experience or vice versa. Either way, be specific in all aspects
make your goals concrete, and use anecdote and detail in describing the influential
management experience.

Question 2: What was your response to a piece of feedback that you have received
regarding an area of weakness? (500 words max)

The adcom wants to see how frankly you portray the feedback and your own
shortcoming, and how insightfully you contextualize your experience. Secondarily, its
about change did you grow and change as a result of the feedback?

This essay will be most compelling and engaging if written as a story. Start right in with
the storys setting where, who, when (ideally make it a fairly recent experience, and one
that holds some meaningful stakes). Then progress through the story, highlighting not
just what you and the other party said and did, but also your thinking as the story
progresses. Finally, give a short example of how you have applied this feedback (or your
learning from this feedback experience) subsequently in other words, how you grew.

Question 3: Please choose ONE essay from the following two options: (500 words max)

If you could choose any three people who have ever lived to join you for dinner, who
would you invite and why?

OR

If you were on the cover of any publication in 10 years, what would the headline and the
content of the article be?

If the first two questions are rooted in real-world, concrete experience, this question
urges you to play a little and use your imagination, wit, creativity, and possibly
broader passions in answering.

Which should you answer? Both are equally good; it depends on which serves your needs
and interest best.

There are various viable and effective approaches to this essay. One is gut instinct and
personal appeal. I.e., if one of these questions strikes a chord with you, engages you, and
you have an idea that you like, probably it will be an effective essay. Go with it! BUT, do
apply some objective, focused analysis as well. Ensure that your content truly illuminates
you in some new and fresh way relevant to the application, and do use detail and
example to make your essay credible and vivid.

Another approach is strategic. If your imagination isnt tickled by these questions,

instead analyze and plan. What relevant and interesting aspects of your profile arent yet
portrayed (or portrayed adequately) in the application? Identify one or two such points,
and work back from that to find suitable topics for one of the two questions. BUT: dont
be too heavy handed with the essay, which wouldnt align with the questions tone.

Random pitfalls:

If you choose the first question, please dont use very obvious or overly angelic people
(Ive seen this essay answered with Gandhi and Mother Teresa more often than I can
believe over 15 years.) Rather, discuss people who show your creative thinking and/or
are personally meaning to you.

If you choose the second question, dont turn the essay into a second goals essay.
Ensure that it extends the portrayal of you in some way.

Michigan Ross

The Ross EMBA essay questions are

straightforward and succinct. Your essays should
embody these qualities and indeed theyll have to
be succinct, given the 400-word length limits.
Taken together, the questions are actually holistic,
encompassing both professional and personal
dimensions. Each question focuses on one of these
dimensions, and each gives a specific lens through
which to focus and shape your answer. Thus, while
you address each of the two questions particular
points, also have you answers reflect and portray the larger picture of your career and
your character/personality.

ESSAYS:

1. What are you most proud of? How does it shape who you are today? (400 words max)

Whether you select a topic for this essay from work or from outside of work, the gist of
the essay will be personal, because you must explain how the chosen experience shaped
you. The wording who you are implies fundamentally as a person, not just
professionally. Select the topic with an eye to where your application strategy and your
heart converge. The heart element gives your essay immediacy and authenticity.
Finally, show action on your part in discussing what youre most proud of adcoms want
doers, people who make things happen. Maybe youre most proud of resolving an issue
or address a challenge or helping someone all actions. But if youre most proud of a
cultural or religious affiliation or something else not inherently an action, add in some
activity or action you took (or take) related to that affiliation. In discussing how the
experience shapes who you are, dont just explain but also include a brief example (a
sentence or even a phrase may suffice) as concrete evidence of this shaping influence.

2. What are your career goals and how will a Ross MBA help you achieve these? (400
words max)

You may want to start by discussing, briefly and engagingly, your current career
situation as a starting point. Then explain how youll move on to your future goals. In
describing your goals at any given point, indicate why you are taking that step or
pursuing that role. Give more detail about the roles you plan immediately post-MBA and
the several years following; it should include specific positions, company, scope of
responsibilities, and desired impact (i.e. what your desired footprint in that role would
be). Longer-term goals need less detail, but they should present a clear direction,
building on the earlier roles.

MIT Sloan Fellows

Your three MIT Sloan Fellows essays must

collectively convey the unmistakable message
that you surpass your peers through consistently
outstanding impact, and that you are destined to
become a leader in your company and even
industry. Simultaneously, the essays must
convey fit with MIT Sloans enduring emphasis
on being an innovative, principled leader and
agent of change. Use the three essays to present
different aspects of your experience and your
character, to show that you envision and drive change, and to portray your rightful place
in the global leadership community.

There is a notable commonality among the two essay questions: their emphasis on
reflection, self-awareness, and synthesizing your experience. MIT SF adcom wants
people who are thoughtful and probing.

Essays:

Statement of Objectives: What are your immediate (1 5 years) and ultimate (>15 years)
professional objectives for attending the program? Specifically, please indicate your
objectives and how they fit with the purposes of the MIT Sloan Fellows Program. How
would your unique background contribute to the diversity of the Sloan Fellows
community? (500 words or less, limited to one page)

Lets break this question into its three parts:

First, your professional objectives. Be specific about position, company/industry,

expected scope of responsibilities, and vision for what you want to accomplish. Give
more detail for the 1-5 year segment. For the longer term goals, show direction but not
as detailed.

Second, your objectives fit with the program. Identify and describe specific aspects of
your objectives that align with the values and purposes of the program. Focus on the 2-3
key elements of this fit fewer, with thoughtful discussion, is far better than a laundry
list of fit points.

Third, your potential contributions to the community. Again, focus on the 2-3 key
aspects. Unique background certainly could refer to professional background, and it
can also include other relevant, interesting factors and experiences if they represent a
potential contribution, such as intimate knowledge of a poorly represented geographic

Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

region. This section can be tricky interesting facts alone dont show potential
contribution; you need to add your insight to make it meaningful.

Essay 1: Reflect on your effectiveness as a leader and give us an example of how you
have leveraged your strengths to demonstrate ethical and innovative leadership. Now
consider the leader you aspire to be what are the areas of personal development you
want to focus on in this program to become that leader? (500 words or less)

This convoluted question needs to be deciphered before its answered. There are three
parts: (1) the story (example) of your leadership, (2) your reflection on your related
strengths, and (3) your developmental needs.

To make the most of the 500 words, select an example/story that portrays leadership that
has ethical and innovative dimensions AND involves your leadership strengths. Also,
look for a story/example that has as many of these elements as possible:

Recent
High-stakes
Your performance in a high level environment
Straightforward to describe
Reflects an aspect(s) of your experience that you want to strategically highlight.

Here is an effective, simple structure: Start right in with the story the example.

As you narrate the story, zoom in on your actions that show your strengths and present
an ethical and/or innovative component. Next, explicitly identify your strengths and
briefly discuss how they helped you lead (keeping in mind that the story really will
actually show this). Last, identify and reflect on 2-3 leadership areas you want to
develop within the program.

Essay 2: Tell us about the most challenging experience you have had in trying to
collaborate with a person or group who did not share the same ideas. What did you learn
from this experience and did it change the way you dealt with similar situations
afterwards? (500 words or less)

When the question says the most, you must present an experience of major significance
whether it happened yesterday or years ago. Ive seen people reflexively respond to
this question with stories about how they convinced people of their point (got people
onboard) but its not necessarily about trying to convince people. If you give the essay
that emphasis, the adcom may worry that you are more self-focused and less substance-
focused, i.e., more concerned with getting your way than with listening and weighing
different ideas. In your story, you may or may not convince people of your own idea
thats not the main point. Its really about (a) how receptive and discerning you are with
a range of ideas, and how you sift through them, and (b) how you respond to other people

and the group (the group dynamic and your role in it) when there are different ideas in
play.

Again, I suggest a simple structure: tell the story, then reflect on what you learned, and
give a brief example of how you applied that learning subsequently.

NYU Stern

Reflecting the character of the university at large,

NYU Stern has always sought applicants who bring
not just requisite accomplishment, but also
intellectual energy and engagement with the world
people who have a point of view and are willing to
express it. Sterns EMBA essay questions are
consistent with these values. While they cover the
standard concerns, they also draw out your ability
to self-reflect and to understand yourself in relation
to others and to the world. The key to acing these
essays is to present a point of view, a message, a
distinctive perspective that will enrich the EMBA community at NYU Stern.

Essays:

1. Describe your short- and long-term career goals and how the NYU Stern Executive
MBA program will help you accomplish them. (750 word limit, double-spaced)

One simple, straightforward, and effective way to structure this essay is to start with
where you are in your career now. This opening sets the context and conveys a bit about
your current situation, emphasizing what is impressive and/or distinctive about it. Then
discuss how the EMBA education will enable you to achieve your immediate goals in
your current role and later your intermediate and longer-term goals, which should
logically flow out of this present role.

In describing your goals, clarify why you want to take that step or assume that role. Add
more detail for your short-term and intermediate goals. In discussing how the program
will benefit you, describe the skills and knowledge you need to acquire and how the
program provides them. Also refer to the structure, curriculum, and/or special features of
the program, noting how you will benefit from them. Finally, resist the temptation to
detail your career progress limit yourself to points relevant to your goals.

2. NYU Stern is committed to helping students develop a deeper set of professional skills
and a broader perspective of the role of business in the world. (750 word limit, double-
spaced)

a. What is a significant contemporary issue on which you, as a business leader, would

like to have an impact?

b. Why is it important to you?

c. How could you leverage your skills and resources to address the issue?

2016 27 www.accepted.com
Top Executive MBA Essay Questions: How to Answer Them Right!

The most important advice here: select an issue that you truly care about (and are
knowledgeable about). You may research some fine points, but responses to this question
that are entirely constructed of research on a topic dont work.

A simple and effective structure for this essay is to follow the a-b-c structure. First talk
about the issue in personal as well as objective terms, i.e., how you came to learn and/or
care about it, perhaps what experience youve had with it if relevant. Take a stand; avoid
being bland or abstract. Then describe how as a business leader you can address this
issue in concrete terms. This last part will vary greatly from person to person for some
your work will directly address this issue; for others work will be divorced from it, and
you will indirectly use your business leadership role as a bully pulpit, as a prominent and
influential community leader/volunteer, etc.

Optional Additional Information Essay: Please provide any additional information of

which you would like the Admissions Committee to be aware. This may include
additional details on your academic/quantitative preparedness through educational or
professional experience, further explanation of academic history, current or past gaps in
employment, or any other information relevant to your application. (500 word limit,
double-spaced)

This questions wording indicates that you can use it not just to explain a problem (low
GMAT, employment gap) but also to present new material that you think will enhance
your application. However, if you are making the adcom read more than is required,
there should be a darn good reason; not just a nice-to-know.

First, succinctly explain any points that need explaining. Then, if there is something you
feel is important that you havent had a chance to discuss elsewhere, write about it,
noting why its essential to a full understanding of your candidacy.

Optional Scholarship Essay: NYU Stern has a strong reputation for fostering
entrepreneurial spirit. Imagine the NYU Stern Executive MBA Admissions Committee is
a group of potential investors, representing a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Why should
the Admissions Committee invest in you as a global business leader? Be sure to
articulate your competitive advantage, as well as the personal and professional qualities
that make you the most compelling candidate for an NYU Stern Executive MBA program
scholarship. (500 word limit, double-spaced)

This essay is essentially your portrait your candidacy at a glance. Do not just
list accomplishments that repeat your resume or the goals in essay 1. Also, dont present
every possible reason you think the adcom should invest in you. Focus on those few
points that (a) are really distinctive and relevant to the MBA and/or (b) support your
goals directly or indirectly and also (c) enhance rather than repeat the application.
Developing an overarching message or theme for this essay before you write it will help
you shape and select the content.

UCLA Anderson

For its essay questions, the UCLA EMBA adcom is

bucking the less is more trend in terms of length. The
two main essays are both a hefty 750 words, long
enough to allow indeed to require some in-depth
exposition, reflection, analysis, and description. These
two questions together cover past, present, and future,
in that order. Essay 1 addresses the past by asking for a
particular story, and essay 2 addresses the present and
future by asking about why-goals-now. The questions indicate that the adcom believes the
personal informs the professional; who you are informs your career and your work, and
therefore who you are as a person matters.

Therefore, it helps to see these essays as two phases of a continuum:

In essay 1 portray qualities, skills, and experience(s) that support your goals;

In essay 2 show that the goals make sense as fulfilling the mission and purpose of the
character portrayed in essay 1.

Essay 1: Legendary UCLA basketball Coach John Wooden once said that ones
leadership is derived from ones character. Give an example of how you have inspired
others to follow your lead by your character, personal leadership style, and the example
you have set. (750 words max)

There are two keywords in this question: lead/leadership and character. The implication
in the latter word is that UCLA seeks applicants who not only have the requisite track
record of leadership and impact that is commonly sought by top EMBA programs, but
also gravitas, depth as a human being. Your chosen example should include
leadership/impact and gravitas/depth.

You can select a topic for this essay either from your work experience or outside it. That
said, for most people I suggest going with a work example, in order to give the adcom a
glimpse of you in your interesting work environment, handling important and high-stakes
situations. Go with a non-work example if it has some specific strategic value for your
application. Also, use a relatively recent experience if possible, to let the adcom see the
person who will show up in the classroom.

Let the story itself carry most of the weight in the essay depict not just the story of
leadership but how you inspired others to follow through your character, example, and
personal leadership style. At the end, write a short concluding paragraph summarizing
this explicitly.

Essay 2. Why is it important to pursue an MBA at this particular time in your career, on
the UCLA Anderson campus? (750 words max)

You may want to start by briefly discussing your current career situation as a starting
point. Then explain how youll move on to your future goals. In describing your goals at
any given point, indicate why you are taking that step or pursuing that role. Give more
detail about the roles you plan immediately post-MBA and the several years following;
they should include specific positions, company, scope of responsibilities, and desired
impact (i.e. what your desired footprint in that role would be). Longer-term goals need
less detail, but they should present a clear direction, building on the earlier roles.

There is clear emphasis on at this particular time in your career. If you develop your
goals effectively, actually why now should be quite apparent, but do directly address
this point directly with at least a sentence and at most a short paragraph.

In discussing why you want to attend the program and study at the UCLA Anderson
campus, be specific: describe what skills and knowledge you need, and how the program
meets those needs. Refer to the features of the program that are most important to you,
detailing how they will support you and your goals. The questions mention of the
Anderson campus also invites discussion of aspects of the program beyond the
specifically academic the location, the culture, etc.

Essay 3. Upload your organizational chart, either official or original, to illustrate your
relationship and position to that of the C-Level and/or Board of Directors.

Ensure that this chart is clear and thorough: include position titles and
departments/function names. A picture is worth a thousand words, and although it
contains words, this chart is essentially a snapshot of your current professional status:
your level of responsibility and accountability, the context for your performance and
achievements.

Essay 4. For reapplicants only: Please describe your career progress since you last
applied and ways in which you have enhanced your candidacy. Include updates on short-
term and long-term career goals, as well as your continued interest in UCLA
Anderson. (750 words max)

Discuss professional developments such as promotions, awards, and new projects, as

well as any significant community involvements and/or educational endeavors. Describe
the activity/experience, and note its positive impact if any. Try to include an anecdote for
at least 1-2 of the activities discussed given the word allowance, you have room for
some detail. Finally, be selective and present only those activities that are relevant and
enhance your application and candidacy in some way.

Wharton

The Wharton EMBA adcom, through its three required

questions, expresses its values and its interest in a
relationship with students who share those values. Each of
the questions highlights a different facet of this relationship.
Respecting, recognizing, and responding to that vision
through your essays will be the key to a successful
application.

Essay question 1 focuses on your goals and Whartons role in helping you achieve
them.

Essay question 2 invites you to share your understanding of qualities that Wharton
values.

Essay question 3 seeks confirmation that you understand in practical terms what a
commitment to attending the program involves.

Essays:

1. What is your career objective and how will the Wharton MBA Program for Executives
contribute to your attainment of these objectives? (750 word limit)

You may want to start by discussing your current career situation to set the context, and
clarify how the MBA education will enable you to achieve your immediate goals in your
current role. You can then naturally move on to your future goals. In describing your
goals at any given point, indicate why you are taking that step or pursuing that role. Put
more detail on the roles you plan immediately post-MBA and the several years following;
longer-term goals need less detail, but they still should present a clear direction.

In discussing how the program will benefit you, be specific: describe what skills and

2. In his book, Winners Never Cheat: Even in Difficult Times, Jon M. Huntsman, Sr.
(W'59), writes: "A crisis creates the opportunity to dip deep into the reservoirs of our
very being, to rise to levels of confidence, strength, and resolve that otherwise we
didn't think we possessed. Describe a time when you were faced with a challenge
and how you responded. (500 word limit)

This question clearly expresses certain qualities that Wharton seeks: ethics, resolve,
fortitude, courage, self-awareness, clear-sightedness, ability to grow. Showing through
an appropriate experience that you possess some of these qualities (one to three will
suffice; trying to address all of them would just create a blur) will convey fit with the
program. Given the gravity of the words in the quote, discuss a true crisis, not a mere
problem or disappointment. Since you cover work in essay 1, you can select a topic for
this essay either from or outside work.

I suggest a relatively recent experience if possible if its beyond a few years in the past,
it must be a truly life-changing experience to work for this essay. Hopefully you havent
had so many recent crises that you have a hard time choosing among them, but if there
are some different options, choose one that strategically works to your advantage by
showcasing something desirable and/or interesting and/or impressive about your
background or work life.

In writing the essay, keep it simple. Tell the story, then briefly reflect on it considering
the factors mentioned in the question.

3. Given your already demanding job and the desire to remain committed to important
family and personal obligations, how do you plan to handle this additional demand on
your time once you enroll? (500 word limit)

This straightforward question deserves a straightforward answer. Discuss the

accommodations you will make at work, such as delegating more, adjusting travel
schedules, etc. You dont have to tell them every single thing you can think of focus on
the most significant two or three adjustments.

Also address your personal responsibilities and how you will meet them with this
additional significant demand on your time and energy; even acknowledging that youll
have less time at the playground with your toddler or mentioning the support of your
significant other will show that youre facing this issue squarely. If youve already
successfully balanced school and working full time, by all means mention it.

Optional Essay:

Please explain any extenuating circumstances you feel the Admissions Committee should

inconsistent academic performance). You may also take this opportunity to share other
aspects of your life that you feel have shaped you that the Admissions Committee would
not otherwise have learned from your application or resume. (500 word limit)

You can use the optional essay not just to explain a problem (low GMAT, employment
gap) but also to present new material that you think will enhance your application.
However, if you are making the adcom read more than is required, there had better be a
darn good reason not just that something is nice to know. First, succinctly explain any
points that need explaining. Then, if there is something you feel is important that you
havent had a chance to discuss elsewhere, write about it, noting why its important for
the adcom to know.
