LESSON SEQUENCE
A) INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY:

Review what NGOs are.

NGO Power Point

What is a NGO? Discussion

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group
which is organized on a local, national or international level.
People with a common interest get together to address a problem that they want to
solve in the world

What do NGOs do?

Perform services, like building wells
Perform humanitarian functions, like helping in natural disasters
Help with communication between the country in need, the project being undertaken
and the Canadian Government, to try to make sure everyone involved in the project has
all the information they need to make sure the project gets done successfully.

Also
Some NGOs are organized around specific issues, like:
Building things - schools, wells, hospitals
Protecting the right of women and kids
Making sure kids get education or making sure people get health care not only by
providing the building, but also the doctors and nurses
NGOs provide:
Analysis - they study the problems and how best to fix them. You dont just decide to
build a well. You need to understand how to get the supplies and the labour to do it
Expertise - once theyve built a well in one place, they know what the problems and
solutions are, and can transfer that to the next place they want to build a well.
Help monitoring and implementing international agreements - if the Canadian or other
government has agreed to provide help and/or money, they make sure the help and
money goes to where it is supposed to go.

B) DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES:

NGO Power Point

NGOs are first come, first serve

The Task

Your class, as good global citizens, has decided to show their concern for others and has raised
$5,000 to contribute to a worthwhile non-governmental organization (NGO), but they can't
seem to decide on which NGO to support. Your task is to research one possible recipient of the
money, and to decide whether or not you would recommend this particular organization for the
funding. You will create a brochure for the organization, which you will present to the class.

After the presentations, the class as a whole will vote on which NGO is to receive your funds, so
your careful analysis and considered opinions matter.

Part One: Research (5 marks)

Using the information found on your NGO's website, and other resources, answer the questions
listed below as Background Information. You will be handing in this sheet as part of your
background research for marks.

Part Two: Brochure (15 marks)

Create a brochure for your chosen NGO. The purpose of the brochure is to create awareness
and interest in your organization so that the class will vote for your NGO to receive the $5000!
The contents of your brochure must follow the guidelines listed here.

Your brochure must include:

Background information
The name of your NGO The NGO's logo
Contact information (web address, mailing address, phone number, etc.)
The organization's Purpose/Mission Statement (what do they hope to accomplish?)
How can people get involved in your organization? (volunteer; memberships; events;
donations)
Other information from your research that will help to "sell" your NGO to the class
(e.g. what are their current programs?)
Images that best represent the actions of your NGO
***ANSWER: Who, what, when, where, why, and how!
Extras!!
Any extras beyond the information required will help you achieve a better grade (e.g. An
image created by you that symbolizes your NGO; a map indicating areas in the world /
country where they are active)

Design:
Colorful Well organized layout
Pleasing Well organized information
Legible (easy to read) Grammar/Spelling

Part Three: Presentation (10 marks)

Present your brochure to the class (maximum 7 minutes). Your goal is to teach the class about
your NGO (what it is; what it does), using your brochure. Tell them why you would recommend
this NGO as being the recipient of the $5,000. Support your argument with key points from
your research. Convince us to donate!!

C) DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

Modifications for MacKenzie, Niki, Rony, Kamil, and Hana will be made as they arise.
Maya should be okay if her partner scribes/does the written portion.

D) CULMINATING ACTIVITY:

The brochure and the presentation make up the culminating activity

E) ON-GOING ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:

See attached rubric.
