CLL725- TUTORIAL 1

Q1.Calulate stoichiometric fuel/air ratio on a mass basis for complete combustion of octane in
air. Also, calculate the composition of the product gas.

Q2. A particular kind of coal is composed of 77.2% C, 5.2% H, 1.2% N, 2.6% S, 5.9% O, and
7.9% ash by weight. Determine the stoichiometric fuel/air mass ratio and product gas
composition for coal combustion in air. Assume that there is no CO formation and Sulphur is
oxidized to SO2.

Q3. a) A fuel contains 86.96% Carbon and 13.04% H by weight. Calculate the higher heating
value, lower heating value and enthalpy of formation of the fuel on a molar basis. The higher
heating value is given as 44 kJ/g. Latent heat of condensation of water is 44 kJ/mol. The standard
enthalpy of formation of CO2 and H2O is -393509 J/mol and -241818 J/mol, respectively.

b) Assuming adiabatic stoichiometric combustion of the fuel oil, calculate the temperature of
combustion products. Initial temperature of the fuel and air is 298 K and pressure is 101 kPa.
Specific heat values for CO2, H2O and N2 are 54, 43.92 & 33.3 J/mol-K, respectively.

c) Repeat adiabatic temperature calculation assuming specific heat variation as Cpi = ai + bi* T
